Cubs Convention

I need some information / advice....

I told my husband I wanted to go to the Cubs Convention for my Christmas gift. I gave him the dates, ticket prices, location, etc - natually he asked questions I did not have an answer for "what exactly happens at the Convention?", "are their players there or just avid Cub fans like you?", "is there entertainment", "how hard is it to get tickets?"

Any information, advice, suggestions would be great!

Thank you in advance!!

"Ask Dad. He'll know. And on the off chance he doesn't, he'll make something up"

I've been to one, so I'm not an expert. But here is my two cents...

But I can give you the first timer’s view from 2007.

We took the train in from Michigan and arrived Friday afternoon. Mistake #1. Come a day early if you can.

Imagine thousands of the most die-hard Cubs fans packed into a hotel and completely taking over life as you know it. Then double it. Now try and check into the hotel. You get the idea.

There is a lot of energy. There are a lot of lines and a lot of waiting. You’ll get to know the area in front of the bank of elevators VERY WELL. Those suckers are packed all weekend.

On Friday (Opening Day of the Convention) there is a Grand Welcome of the team and coaches in the main ballroom (I got in line late and missed this – lesson #2 learned. Get there early. No matter how far in advance of a particular session you go, you will not be the first person in line).

There are sessions where you get to hear the players, coaches, front office staff, broadcasters and Cubs legends speak.

The year I went, there were themed presentations (anniversary panel discussions featuring a trivia game show pitting 1969 Cubs against 1984 Cubs; there was a discussion of Milt Pappas’ near perfect game; a discussion of the business side of the game; a look at the minors and scouting in general, etc.)

There are lots of autograph sessions (lots of line waiting here). Don’t expect to get a general autograph session for Cubs legends like Banks, Williams, Santo, Sandberg or the like. In 2007, those opportunities were offered only to “lottery” winners. If you didn’t win, your odds of getting their autographs went WAY, WAY down. I’m still hoping to get Ernie Banks someday.

There are opportunities to buy LOTS of Cubs stuff (much of which you probably don’t need) and goodie bags of Cubs “giveaway items” from previous seasons. These bags are purchased “blind”. You don’t know what you are going to get until AFTER you fork over the money.

Lots of venders. My wife got to spend some time talking with Fergie Jenkins and Pat Hughes this way. Fergie was there pitching his foundation and Pat was at the WGN Radio table. Lots of "giveaway" items in the vender area (to lure you to their booths). I spoke with the “CubsCast” podcast guys.

There are opportunities to buy used game items from jerseys to bats to whatever. This stuff goes fast.

And Collectors. LOTS and LOTS of collectors. PRO collectors. So many in fact, they can diminish the experience for the “casual” fan (if there IS such a Cubs fan). They stake out opportunities for autographs and are, well PUSHY is the polite word for it. I’ve seen them run over kids with abandon.

I guess it all boils down to how BADLY you want it. “Opportunity” is the word. If you are willing to stake out a good seat in the main ballroom, or one of the smaller conference rooms (and stay there for a portion of the day during multiple sessions), you can get up close and personal with players and fans. But you have to work for it. If you move from event to event, room-to-room then you take your chance on a seat and location. Standing room only (in the back) for the more popular sessions is the norm. If you wait to go, you won’t get in. Plan ahead.

I literally saw people during the night/early morning in the hallways in sleeping bags to be one of the first in line for a session. This convention isn’t for the faint of heart. My wife went with me and bailed on most of it after she saw how much time she’s have to invest simply WAITING for the next “thing” to happen. She went shopping downtown instead.

I’m sure some things have changed in the last 2 years, but this was my experience. It can be overwhelming. My wife and I agreed that it was good to do it- once. We just weren’t mentally prepared for what we encountered.

That being said, I reserved a hotel room for the weekend (coming in THURSDAY) and we’re planning to come this January for the 25th Anniversary year of the Cubs Convention. Idiotic?

We’re Cubs fans, what can I say…

Hmmmm

Thank you for the specifics – it doesn’t sound like my cup of tea…
I love the Cubs, but I am not a fan of huge crowds (except when I am at Wrigley or a Dave Matthews concert), nor am I a fan of waiting – and who knows what the weather will be like mid-January, it may be impossible to come a day early.

I certainly hope you have a better experience this year! But as a Cub fan, you are probably used to frustration! hehee!!
I’ve noticed ticket prices for 2010 appear to have increased, perhaps my money is better spent on great seats at a game or two.

by ckg425 on Oct 13, 2009 10:03 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Actually there is a lot more than crowds and autographs

I like to ask questions of management myself. Hendry is pretty good at dodging stuff but not dishonest. I particularly
like the DOWN ON THE FARM session on Sunday with the Cubs minor league folks. One of the fun events in the past was “NOT FOR WOMEN ONLY” where players are asked silly personal questions but alas with the women who did it now gone from the Trib I don’t know what will happen with that. I avoided the convention for 20 and went for 3 of the last 4 years. I enjoyed it but I won’t make this year. I would say give it a try if you can.
Where did you hear anything about ticket prices for next year ? I am a season ticket holder and have not received any information.

Keep in mind it is a CHARITY event.

I don’t think the price is crazy especially if you go all 3 days. However do not EAT in the hotel.
Very expensive. Lots of good places nearby. If you sneak out the door on the south west side , there is a coffee place on the corner to avoid the VERY overpriced Starbucks in the hotel.

IIRC the $20 price is the same as last year for hotel guests, also the $60 face price is the same.

What is a ripoff is the tickets.com fees charged for that — I’m guessing THOSE don’t go to charity.

also from the assumption that ticket prices have increased every year and were the second highest average ticket price in 2008 at $42.49 – up 23.9%… even though I don’t have confirmation – I’m assuming that Yankee tickets have usurped the Cubs and Red Sox for the highest ticket prices.

… that’s a broker site, attempting to sell tickets that haven’t even been priced yet.

Essentially, you DID pull it out of thin air — the broker sites can’t possibly be a guide to any ticket prices that have not yet been set.

The Cubs would be playing with fire if they raised prices in this economy after the mediocre season just ended.

I guess it was StubHub that really had me confused. When can you purchase tickets for Spring Training?

I recall watching “Chicago Tribune Live” and they were discussing how they thought Tom Ricketts would make Wrigley more “family friendly” (more promotions for kids, etc). I always thought the best way to make any ballpark family friendly was keeping the ticket prices reasonable so people bring their kids!

Can I ask a question – and I am honestly asking, not trying to prove a point – I know people can’t read “tone” in writing…
When I went to “tickets” on the Cubs website, then to Stub Hub why did they already have price ranges for tickets? Isn’t that deceptive – isn’t StubHub the “official fan to fan ticket market place for cubs.com”?

Very scenic in the warmth of summer…

We usually stay at the Hampton on Illinois downtown (by the Red Line for “easy” ballpark access) or we stay at the Majestic Hotel on Brampton (about a half mile from the Wrigley).

But seriously, we’ve been taking I-90 since the 1950s BEFORE the I-94 link had been built. And in all those years, I can honestly say I’ve never been on I-90 when at least a portion of it wasn’t under repair.

The Mackinac Bridge in Michigan gets painted regularly. Not all at once, but portions each year. So by the time they have finished a painting “cycle”, it IS time to repaint it starting back at the “head”, so to speak.

The Hampton is in a good location and you can get a reasonable rate (if there is such a thing in the city) depending on when you go and how long you stay.

Valet parking is a rip-off. I parked across the street in a small gated lot for about $30 a day. Hampton wants $45. You are one block from the red line and about 4 blocks from Michigan Ave.

This will be my 8th Convention

pretty much everything Zeke said above has been the norm. However, I would say that the Club has made the players less accessible over the last couple of years. For example, you use to be able to shake hands/sometimes got an autograph (how I got Ernie) from the players as they were walking into the Grand Ballroom for opening cerermonies. They no longer come in that way. In addition, very few of the big players come through the main lobby anymore either (that is how I got Sandberg the first time). The crowds are too crazy when they come in and the security there can’t deal with it

Kitty O’sheas (the hotel bar) is a good place to get Autographs of the older retired players and sometimes the up and coming players.

Convention Bingo is a must although I have never won…pretty much have to decide if you want to go to the opening cermeonies or go to Bingo. If you go to opening cermenonies, you pretty much will not get a table for Bingo.

At this point, I pretty much go to drink beer with my friends and get away from the kids for a few days. I still will wait in line for autographs but I come prepared with a stool to rest my cranky knees and back. They are a ton of dealers so it really does ruin it for the casual collector like myself who will never sell his stuff.

When Ryno was managing Peoria, they came to Lansing to play the Lugnuts.

The Lugnut staff was NOT prepared for the turnout of autograph seekers. Most were casual fans and polite, but there was a chunk of “Pro” collectors that really pissed off a lot people from the fans to stadium staff and Ryno himself. He could spot them and cut them off pretty quickly when they went over the line, but man, some of those folks are jerks.

Speaking of Cubs Convention

Each year I purchase two of the grab-bags and give my 6 little cousins all the items in it.

I couldn’t go last year and I paid someone the money for it (plus shipping and $20 convenience). Unfortunately that person admitted later that I got 2 autographed balls in there and that he took them. He refunded me half the money.

Is there anyone honest who would be willing to do this for me this year? I’ll pay you in advance. I’ll be in Australia during the CC but the grab-bags are a tradition in my family I like to keep. I know its early but can anyone help?

Let’s talk in a day or two to work this out. Since I’m not going this year I haven’t looked into passes but it’s a fair deal.

Very busy at work for next 36 hours but let’s chat. Do you have a contact email?

No rush, take your time.

We have a few weeks before Cubs.com even mentions that the convention is coming up. So no worries.

If you want a specific autograph or photo of a popular player

You might want to get in line 2 hours in advance.

In 2008, DeRosa and Theriot were the 9AM openers. Literally people were in line the night before. It’s very crazy.

Personally I enjoyed getting the photos over the signed balls. Photos last a lifetime. I’m not there for valuable signed balls.

This will be my first year.

I literally moved to Chicago the weekend of last year’s convention, so I wasn’t able to go. Moreover I live 1 block away from the Hilton on 8th and State. Can anyone tell me if they give any special treatment to Chicagoans with regards to ticket sales?

Which IS a substantial savings. Rooms at the Hilton (with tax) are over $200 a night.

And that’s the “Cubs Convention Rate”. I don’t know if that means it’s less or MORE (suckers that we are…)

IMPORTANT INFORMATION if you are staying in the Hilton

Make sure make a reservation for FOUR people even if you are two. This allows you to buy four tickets
at the discount rate and you will definitely not have a problem finding people ( BCB hint, hint) to buy them from you.
However if you do not RESERVE for 4 , you can not ask for them when you get there.

I won last year and was so evil I sold my Ernie Banks signing because I already have Ernie’s autograph.

EVIL!

Well you can claim the tickets beforehand, get it punched and do the raffle. That’s just as evil!

You should have asked to switch autographs though. I saw people do that two years ago.

by ak123 on Oct 14, 2009 11:50 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I was offered switches

But I have odd taste and the one person I would really have wanted was Lilly and he was not a big enough name for a raffle. Guy who bought seemed so sincere about waiting his whole life to get Ernie’s autograph. I think I could have gotten more but boy was my nephew who I went with pissed that I did not let him have it.

I got Ryno a couple years ago

I was so excited for that! I remembered waiting in line and an older lady (sorry if she is reading this) scolded me that all I got was a baseball. She had this expensive jersey.

The lady didn’t understand I wasn’t doing this for value, I was doing it because of what he meant to me as a Cubs fan.

I almost wanted to buy a cool Maddux item this year.

A memorabilia store across from Wrigley was going out of business and they had a poster from 05 commemorating Lee’s MVP and Maddux’s 3000th strikeout autographed by both of them. It was about $115 which was not bad. I have a few very offbeat Maddux items but if he ever game to the convention I would be there and try to barter a raffle ticket for an autograph. I would kill for a personalized one.

Hey, Al holds court there too, doesn't he?

Al, you should get a vendor booth and sell BCB shirts and your books. You may even be able to get BCBers to staff the booth on 2-hour shifts curing the convention (for a shirt, of course… ;)

Then again, that would be a lot of work to coordinate…

I figure the book sellers are a lot like the "money changers" in the bible.

They get a perverse pleasure in offering five to ten cents on the dollar (originally spent on the textbook) to a student on their way out of town for term break.

“Oh, they aren’t using that textbook for that curriculum after this term, but I’ll tell you what I’ll do: I’ll give you a whole dollar for that $100 textbook.”

I've heard that one before.

Such a scam. My kids are 11 months apart and I think my daughter was only able to hand down 2 textbooks to my son in the whole 4 years of high school together. Granted they didn’t take some of the same classes, but for a religion history class?….gimme a break. The only thing “updated” was that the cover said 2nd edition on it and they made him get a new book. Whoa, we drifted OT a bit. This son of mine thinks the Cubs are what’s giving me gray hairs-if he only knew.

If there are still rooms available

you can book at the Hilton now and that would include your convention passes. It is my understanding that the general public passes do go fast but this year’s team and economy could affect that. I think you just have to ask for the Cubs Convention Rooms….

Ah…the land of five seasons. At least you have the Quaker Oats factory smell to keep you warm and cozy in the winter months.

As Al stated above, there is more to the convention than autographs. That is what I like to do but it is mind numbing and taxing on the patience. Regardless, you get to spend an entire weekend in the greatest city in the world.

the land of five seasons....

and five smells!! More after 2008’s 500 year flood – its so nice to live in a city where the 4th worst natural disaster in US history occurred! Quaker Oats flooded so there was the smell of flood water and crunch berries in the air – what a combination!
Don’t get me wrong, I love Chicago (the North Side, of course) – but I HATE winter!
I was not blessed with patience – that may be a problem during the convention. I need to make up my mind soon, I imagine you need to be “on the ball” to get tickets.

Rooms at the Hilton open up periodically.

It was completely booked last Spring for next year’s Convention (2010), but some people apparently cancelled their reservations when they heard the keynote speaker was going to be a certain former right fielder who only wanted to speak for nine minutes.

Question about Tickets

If I reserve a room and the passes are sold out, can I still get them when I check in or do I have to buy them off the Internet? If anyone could help me with this I would appreciate it.

You get the rights to buy the passes with your room.

The “sold out” to individual buyers is a separate issue. When you get the room, you’ll get the passes.

Wouldn't it be nice?

Wouldn’t it be nice to go to the 2010 Cubs Convention and see Kerry Wood and Mark DeRosa back waiting to meet with the fans? Wouldn’t it be nice to have Ryne Sandberg talking about what he is going to do this year as manager? Wouldn’t it be nice to have Steve Stone stand next to the nice moves he made as the new Cubs President (including a new GM)? Wouldn’t it be nice to have legends like Rick Sutcliffe and Mark Grace there?

I know it’s a pipe dream, but one can hope I guess. I’m not going, because I don’t want to see the same garbage team standing next to the same GM and manager. All next year is going to be is more of the same, minus the guys like Jake Fox and Sam Fuld who dared to try hard.

Steve Stone as Cubs president?

You lost me there.

by Al on Oct 21, 2009 7:55 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Where?

Kerry Wood was an excellent reliever for us, and he was the clubhouse leader. None of the Milton Bradley crap would have been allowed to take place if he was around. He, and others like DeRosa, would have put him in his place and told him to put a sock in it.

He also was an excellent closer with a hammer curve and high 90’s fastball. I’d say that’s a lot better than Hendry and Piniella’s choice for this year, which was a guy with a 90 mph fastball and no second pitch (basically a batting practice pitcher).

Don’t knock people’s statements without having a better idea.

by TheGrinch13 on Oct 25, 2009 11:31 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Where did I lose you?

So you’re ok with a manager who allows veterans to be lazy while making excuses for them? You’re ok with someone who sits young, energetic players in favor of overpaid ones who only care about themselves? A guy who makes excuses for not playing guys like Fox at third base for over a month when Ramirez went down so that he can play Andres Blanco and Fontenot? A guy who plays Bobby Scales (a second baseman) in LF every day instead of Fox? A guy who doesn’t go out to argue calls anymore to stick up for his team? A guy who allows his pitching coach to sit there while relievers give up 3 runs before he makes him get off his rear end and talk to them?

I could keep going, but you get the idea. Every Cubs fan watched this the entire year. Ryne Sandberg would restore some class to the clubhouse and he’d play guys who deserved to play. He’d interact with the fans, stick up for his team, and bring back a winning attitude instead of the negative one that inhabits the clubhouse.

If you’re ok with having Piniella for another year, that’s fine. You must not want to win next year, however.

by TheGrinch13 on Oct 25, 2009 11:35 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

you lost me again

Where did I say anything about wanting Lou back or not wanting him back? All I said was that you lost me with Sandberg being manager this year. Personally, I would like to see him get another year of experience, but maybe in 2011. I don’t think he’s ready. That’s why you lost me.

That being said, I disagree with pretty much everything you had to say there(except for maybe the Sutcliffe/Grace part). No, I don’t want Wood or DeRosa back. I wouldn’t be upset if they came back, but I don’t think we really need them. I explained my feelings about Sandberg, but I have to say I disagree about Lou. I do want him back next year. We’ve had three winning seasons in a row-two of which went to the postseason! So excuse me if I laugh at your thinking that I don’t want them to win. And then-Steve Stone as Cubs president? He might be knowledgable. He might have been a good broadcaster. His announcing got me to love the game and I really admire him and respect his opinions. But that hardly qualifies him for the job. I also don’t appreciate you calling the Cubs a garbage team. Thank you.
