I personally am happy with this decision...

Agreed
And props on the “R. Kelly is from Chicago” ring, very funny.
Bringing the Olympics to Chicago would only cause rampant poverty, crime and unemployment for 2017. I’m glad they’re going somewhere that already has all of that in spades.

Really?
“… would only cause rampant poverty, crime and unemployment for 2017”. And the evidence of that is in how Seoul, Barcelona, Atlanta, Sydney, Athens and Beijing were similarly overrun with these problems after their Olympics?
I get it when people say they don’t want to run the risk of getting stuck with the bill. I disagree, but I get it. This kind of talk is ridiculous, however.

The real issue lately
has not been cost overruns and taxes, but cities left with absolutely no use for all the brand-new buildings. Athens especially has had that problem.

Very sad,
but I knew we were in big trouble when I saw several “IT’S GONNA HAPPEN” signs being waved in the “celebration” crowd at Daley Plaza.

Chicago should breathe a sigh of relief
I grew up in Chicago, but now live in Atlanta and was here in ’96. Aside from the obvious issues with the Atlanta Olympics, most people here would tell you honestly that being a Host City is WAY overrated.
Rampant povery, crime and unemployment are not really the case. Rampant cronyism, paralyzing construction and a huge bill left to be paid are the realistic problems.
Any illusions you may have had of scoring tickets and attending events simply because you live there is also a huge fallacy. You think you’ve dealt with seedy scalpers trying to get in to a Bears or Cubs games? You having SEEN a scalper until you have seen the Eurotrash scalpers that the Olympics attract.
Believe me – Chicago won by losing!

I'll second this post
I also am a Chicago native, living back in Chicago. I lived in Atlanta for 20 years, and the Olympics were during that time. At the time, I was all for the Olympics coming to Atlanta. I thought it would be great for the city and maybe give it an identity. Wrong. What I had to put up with for six years was endless construction, lots of finger pointing about why things didn’t get done, or got done improperly, etc. It was extremely frustrating as I was covering the envronmental impacts of the Olympics on Atlanta for a paper I worked for and there were times I could see where I needed to be, but couldn’t get there because of closed streets due to construction. And no, there was no public transportation available to the places I needed to be.
And you know what Atlanta has to show for all the crap it put up with? Not much. Dorms for GA Tech (the Olympic Village), a baseball stadium for the Braves and a tennis venue outside Stone Mountain Park that is rarely used because they still can’t attract big name attention.
While the oldest housing project in the nation was torn down (and needed to be) for the Olympic Village, hundreds of families were displaced very suddenly. It was tragic. Also, a new road was built into Stone Mountain Park off one of the freeways and it was NEVER used, and still isn’t. I lived right there, so I know for a fact it was never used. It remains a closed off exit. What a waste of money.
I never want to live through another Olympics like that again!

Just as an aside...
I just finished editing some shots from the event at Daley Plaza, if anyone is interested. Honestly, most people didn’t seem all that disappointed. The real shocked seemed to be that we were such a non-factor in the voting.
Anyway, enjoy.

They should know better than to put up the "W" sign before a win has been registered.
