Alot of players do this!

I would sleep with Blou if it meant the Cubs would win a WS. by Doggie Stalker on Aug 22, 2009 4:11 PM EDT

really? it's not a regular season game

….. even then, in an important game I would question it. I think it shows a lack of respect to your teammates. I believe you when you say it happens all the time, but still.

Cub related story when this happened.

On September 18, 1989, the Cubs went into the 9th leading the Mets 10-4. Mitch Williams got the first two outs easily, then gave up a double, a walk, two singles and a HBP making the score 10-6 and loading the bases, bringing the tying run to the plate.

The scheduled batter was Darryl Strawberry. But he wasn’t on deck or in the dugout. There was a delay while they went to find him — he was half-dressed, getting ready to shower, because he had made the 2nd out of the 8th inning and didn’t figure he would bat again.

He hurriedly got dressed and came to bat. Williams struck him out to end the game.

I’m guessing this kind of thing happens all the time; we just never hear about it.

I agree with you...

I would bet there were not any other players in the showers.

It’s a critical game in the postseason. It’s a close game and the Dodgers could have either tied the series or ended up being down 3-1.

Sorry, at best he’s being selfish, at worst, he doesn’t care.

I realize a lot of players do this but this is the postseason!

You did it right.

Keith Hernandez kind of famously did this

in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series.

On the Manny scale, this is about a 2 as far as outrage.

Wasn't Keith...

Drinking a beer though?

Someday we'll go all the way...

He was probably still more sober than Darryl Strawberry.

He was

Buster Olney (on ESPN this morning) said Hernandez was drinking a beer and smoking a cigarette in the clubhouse while the rally was happening.

Also, I remember hearing elsewhere that Kevin Mitchell was also in the clubhouse during the 10th inning of Game 6 and was getting undressed when his turn to bat came up. He had to run out and bat without any protective gear on under his uniform pants.

Hernandez would have smoked in between pitches

if baseball would have let him.

Here's the link to a Peter Gammons SI story about Game 6

In his story, Gammons notes (non-judgmentally) that Hernandez was drinking a beer in the clubhouse and watching the rally on TV.

Also, regarding Kevin Mitchell, if you read the article (page 6), it sounds like Mitchell was going commando when he batted in the 10th (and he got a base hit).

Shades of Sammy!

The quotes in the paper from Torre this morning show that he is fully on board and running interference for the Man-boy.

I don’t know the answers, but…
 - Is this what it takes to win a world championship?
 - Does unflappable mean that these guys are so cooly disengaged that, well, it might be mistaken for not giving a crap about anything but themselves?

Lee Smith took naps during the game

until he was called on to warm up.

baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out
