What do you guys think of Johnny Damon?
Think he's worth a one or two year deal if we can get him for that price?
I don't think the guy is gonna set the world on fire, but is it worth a shot? I also know he would have to play CF, and I don't really know if I'm alright with that, I just thought I would throw that idea out there and see what everyone thought. So, your thoughts, guys?

He did look better with a beard.
But if you think Phonsi turned alot of singles into doubles, you want no part in this guy. Runners actually outrun his throw to home, on the second or third hop.

Too old
Soriano comes back healthy next year (fingers crossing), but, he never covered much ground. Getting Fukudome back to right, and upgrading in CF is a big priority. Damon in the outfield doesn’t get that done.

One of my all time favorite signs at a game
Damon’s first game back in Boston had a big very well made/drawn sign with a image of Damon that read
“Looks like Jesus, throws like Mary, acts like Judas”
No thanks he is way past his prime. I am sure Boras will sell him as the second coming of Willie Mays.

If you could give me Johnny Damon's bat
and someone else’s defense, sure I’d ponder it. But what he is now, I’m just not sure he fits the Cubs needs for 2010.
Personally, I think the Yankees offer him arb and he picks up the 1 year deal and sticks around, potentially retiring after 2010.

WHOA
Interesting…
I don’t know if Johnny would be the BEST option, but I do believe he is a BETTER option than what we have going. (As long as it is a 1-2 year deal)
If the Cubs go get any “star” player, there is going to be one question they are asked now after the whole Milton-show… “Can they handle it in Chicago?”
I don’t think Johnny will have any problems with Chicago… not after being in Boston and New York. So, this goes in his favor.
I think he is still a decent player on the field, and a good player in the dugout. This also is in his favor.
He has a ton of playoff experience…
If the Cubs CAN’T get anyone better, I would love for Johnny Damon to be our CF-RF next season rather than what he had there this…

Naked Pushups in the Cubs Locker Room?
Got this from Johnny’s wiki page…
“He has also said: “I do naked pull-ups” moments before game time in the team’s locker room." Damon also went on to say that he really enjoys being naked in the locker room and that his teammates find it to be no big deal."

According to Bill James Favorite Toy
Projected Stats:
Hits: 2,986 (44% chance at 3,000)
Doubles: 559 (23% chance at 600)
Triples: 109 (43% chance at 110)
Home Runs: 272 (21% chance at 300)
Stolen Bases: 466 (23% chance at 500)
I won’t show the predictions of runs scored or runs batted in because those are team related factors. If he gets to 3,000 hits, he’ll garner Hall of Fame consideration. If he doesn’t, he’d have a strong uphill climb even if he meets the projected numbers. It’s amazing how many cases suddenly look better if the person has 3,000 hits. There’s enough variation to consider the possibility that Johnny Damon could get to 3,000 hits and no one who ever got to 3,000 hits has ever been kept out of Cooperstown (Palmeiro hasn’t hit the ballots yet). He’s going to finish with more than 1,500 runs scored and over 1,000 RBI and combined with the possibility of 3,000 hits, Damon would eventually get into Cooperstown.
Does that mean I think the Cubs should take a chance on him? Not at all. He can go milestone chasing with another team that would not mind having a player like Damon on the roster.
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
by Ace Venom on Oct 23, 2009 11:32 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I have a hard time imagining Damon being a better overall option
than a Fuld/Johnson platoon. The home/away power splits have me wondering how much the new Yankee Stadium is hiding his decline. Given the probable cost in dollars and that the Cubs don’t need a RF or LF, I guess I don’t understand the discussion of Damon.
I guess if the plan is to find a way to trade Soriano, Bradley & Fukudome somehow one for one for the entire 1999 Royals starting outfield of Damon, Beltran & Dye without incurring more cost, then there’s a conversation to have.
if this was still new to me, i wouldn't understand

Damon would be ideal for a team that had a DH
I just don’t think there is any way he can play OF for us given we already have a LF and Scott Boras is going to ask for an arm and a leg.

Damon is going to end up somewhere
He’s still productive even though his outfield skills are in decline. He still has an outside shot at 3,000 hits, which is enough incentive for some people to continue. He can still DH and AL teams could do worse than Damon when it comes to a DH.
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
by Ace Venom on Oct 23, 2009 10:23 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
So what? As long as it isn't with the Cubs
He is a huge defensive liability so he has nothing to offer the Cubs, that’s the point.

I never said I wanted him to play for the Cubs
Damon can still contribute with his bat, which is enough for some teams who might want to take a chance on him. The Cubs have no room for Damon in the outfield, so even without considering his defensive liabilities, there’s no chance. Now some NL team might be crazy enough to try to convert him to a first baseman, but I see him staying in the AL so he can DH.
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.

If only we had acted like the Hendry-haters say he acted.
We would have traded Geovany Soto in a deal for Roy Halladay and outbid the Yankees for Jorge Posada. Instead we stuck with the home-grown talent. We would have kept Mark DeRosa, just as a backup, signed Orlandon Hudson, and traded Mike Fontenot, Felix Pie, and Josh Vitters for Matt Holliday. Instead, we cleared DeRosa to make room for more home-grown talent. When Bobby Abreu found no market for himself, instead of leaving a backup space for Micah Hoffpauir, we would have signed Abreu, too. But, no, we wanted to give Hoffpauir his shot.
If only we actually had an extreme addiction to free agency…

I think we would all agree...
…the Yankees are pretty much in a league of their own when it comes to how much money they can spend, and therefore can make more mistakes and get away with it. You then have the next tier down (Cubs, Red Sox, Met’s etc.) who have enough revenues to spend big bucks, but can’t afford to make a lot of mistakes either (especially when you factor in no-trades, and long term deals).
If you look at all the other teams (besides the Yankees), no one else has been able to sustain winning on a consistant basis without a core foundation of everyday players from their farm (and even the Yankees started to get beat in the playoffs when their farm core started to age).
If you have the money, spend it by all means, but it can set you back if enough mistakes are made that end up hand cuffing you for a while.
Ricketts is coming in here with 500 mil in debt, so I highly doubt his thought process is going to be to spend through previous mistakes. He will probably want the baseball operations to focus on getting better production out of a payroll that is top 3-4 in baseball, I would think.

Products of the Yankee farm system
Jeter, Cano, Posada, Cabrera, Pettitte, Rivera, Chamberlain, Hughes, Aceves, Coke…that’s three Hall of Famers in waiting, two highly gifted young pitcher and one of the best young 2nd baseman in the game who is fresh off a 200 hit, 100 run, 80 RBI season.
Products of the Yankee farm system that were traded away for other valuable parts…Mike Lowell, Nick Johnson, Eric Milton, Ohlendorf, Jose Tabata, Alfonso Soriano…to name a few top of mind
Waiting in the wings….Austin Jackson, the hotshot young catcher who has been ranked in the top 5 overall in baseball but I forget his name
So don’t for a minute think the Yankee success of the past 15 years hasn’t been hugely impacted by a high quality farm system and major focus on player development.
