Semi-OT: Chicago Tribune Memo as New Sports Section Launches
Interesting leaked memo from the Tribune Tower regarding their rebranded sports section. Could dissect it for hours, but I'm sure you'll reach the same conjectures I do. Please note the fifth graph.
Rosenbloom five times a week... Enjoy your paper, Trib subscribers!

Ugh.
More stuff that no one wants. Incidentally, the Chicago Breaking Sports site is already live.

Rosenbloom daily?
What, sounds like some photos featuring tequila and a donkey are floating around somewhere.
Seriously, we all know the Tribune has the “better” paper. The only problem is that none of them are any good. The real fight is with the ESPN branded stuff, and frankly, they’re going to lose that one.

Oh...
And thanks for the link, Chilango.

My pleasure.
I do find it interesting that no one has said anything about that fifth graph:
Much like the Cubune myth, the conventional wisdom among some in Chicago has been that our pals across the way have the better Sports section.
Or am I too sensitive?

Well, remember...
… that’s an internal memo intended to be viewed only by his employees.

Other ideas we like … -Where are they now: John Macchione, William Ligue? -Locker talker: What’s in there?
Finally, random irrelevancies and obscure peripheral figures break away from the totally free internet and pseudo-news Red Eye. This is the kind of stuff people want when they PAY for a newspaper, people!

Oh, brother
They tried this “in your face” crap in the mid to late 1990’s, and it turned a lot of people away. Those that don’t learn from history . . . .
Wow, the 1980’s really were a long time ago.

Sounds great...
…now all they have to do is get better sports writers!

FWIW...
… the new section is a great big yawn. They have a couple new features on page 2 (Rosenbloom, boring as ever), a new logo on the front page (blue, reading “Chicago Sports”), and the same old layout inside.

Thanks for the update.
I bet they’re all suffering from NFL heartbreak today.

I bought both a Tribune and Sun-Times today...
…in the hopes that I could do a thorough analysis of both sports sections and post a comparison of the two – a tale of the tape if you will. But about two minutes later I found myself thinking “there’s $1.50 I’ll never see again…”

And the sad thing is...
Monday is the expanded version of those sections.
