I see one year, $7-8 mil guaranteed with incentives to reach maybe $12-13 mil. Seems like something the Red Sox would entertain. I wonder if Harden would take less, try to rebuild value in San Diego.
This was the response of Tim Dierkes of mlbtraderumors.com to my question: "What kind of deal will Rich Harden get this off-season? And who will give it to him?" in today's live chat.

Be seeing you Rich...
…and I do mean RICH.

Obviously Sparky was never a Cubs fan...
I should've given you a photo credit - sorry!
The pic shows up on my sidebar because I tagged this Fanshot “Rich Harden,” so it was convenient to grab. :-)

Take less to play in San Diego ?
I think not. Not like he is a surfer dude or grew up in the area.

If Harden has healthy season
he would probably put up Cy Young numbers pitching at PetCo park, would greatly improve his ability to sign a huge contract after this coming season.

But if he signs with Red Sox by the end of the year
He can get tickets to this years Winter Classic. I think this should be the deciding factor for good hockey loving Canadian.

Cy Young numbers require wins.
That seems unlikely to be in San Diego with a team that can’t score and may trade the only good bat they have.
Cy Young numbers require losses too
It’s a well known fact that Cy Young has the all-time career wins mark (511), but did you know he also holds the all-time losses mark (316)?

Fairly sure that Greinke is going to contradict that stereotype
The problem for Rich is that, well, he’s no Greinke.
With all due respect to Mr. Dierkes.....
what is he basing it off of? Is that just a personal guess?
I still say the Cubs need to do their best to retain him. I’m not sold on Gorz being reliable starter in the rotation next season. It doesn’t hurt to have too much starting pitching and I feel like we’ll regret it if he walks.
Sure, you gotta keep your own monetary figures in mind in how much you want to pay the guy but I stand by saying that he needs to be a Cub next season.

Is Dierkes "in the know" at all?
Or is he just speculating? I don’t know anything about the guy, other than he runs the mlbtraderumors site.
From MLBTradeRumors.com
Tim worked in the search engine marketing field before taking the website full-time in January of 2008. He graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a business administration major in 2004. Tim originally met his lovely wife Agnes on campus. He currently lives with his wife and daughter in Roselle, Illinois. Tim is a lifelong Cubs fan, but swears it does not affect his objectivity on MLBTR.
Tim has done many radio interviews, including WGN Chicago, MLB Home Plate on XM, Baseball Prospectus Radio, WLW Cincinnati, and more. Tim also runs a daily fantasy baseball website at RotoAuthority.com.— His guess is as good as o
—Soooo, his guess is as good as ours.

I posted Dierkes' quote merely for reference.
At the end of the day, yeah, I suppose his guess is as good as ours. But Tim is a pretty well-respected voice when it comes to these things, and he has a lot more at stake than those of us milling around in the general rabble of Internet-based baseball discussion. MLBTR has become a very widely used Web site for keeping up with its titular subject. I find it helps to get a sense of where established authorities on a subject stand in formulating my own opinions. (Oh, and I was kinda thrilled to actually get my question picked – first time!)

AND I can't reply to my own friggin post.
JEEBUS!

Unfortunately, Rich Harden is as good as gone in a Cub uniform
I understand the decision to let him walk. Given the exploding payroll situation and all the bad contracts it simply isn’t prudent to add even more risk to the equation by giving Harden another deal. If even for only one year.
"Cubs will win 79 to 83 games." BLou (7/21/09)
You're probably right - it doesn't "feel" like Harden will be back right now.
But if the Cubs could sign him for a year (at the price cited) with an option, I think they should strongly consider it.
