The strikeouts look good, but the walks are still higher than what I’d like to see . . . .

I'm not so much worried about the hits
I’ve got no idea what the caliber of the fielding is behind him.
The walks are more concerning.

I would sleep with Blou if it meant the Cubs would win a WS. by Doggie Stalker on Aug 22, 2009 4:11 PM EDT
tanks..
i hope see him in action here my town in 3 games serie against Mexicali, November 17,18 &19..
eyyy..
Translation, please.
I ran it through Google Translate, but I’d rather have a real translation from a native Spanish speaker.

Jealous much?
Alternatively, I can offer you Spanish classes at my place of employment: Here.
He’s just saying he wants Spellcheck to be on the roster when Aguilas visits his hometown of Navojoa, Sonora. And he calls me “damned fortunate” for living in Chicago.

ok..
i just reply the post to Chilango2.. tell it him that i hope Samarzdija stay in the Mexicali roster when they visit to us here in Navojoa when they open a 3 game Series against my team Mayos… November 17,18 & 19,, i dont know for how many pitches, innings or games started has Jeff limited of their scouter or manager.
Its
good that Sammy is improving but it seems like everyone has lost sight of Matt Camp who’s 6th in the league in hitting at Mexacali and tied for the league lead in stolen bases, mostly playing shortstop which gives us another shortstop to go along with Barney, Castro, Samson, Lake, Flaherty, Lemahieu, Lee, Watkins and Darvill. Camp was a 12th rounder in the 2006 draft and has very good utility value playing Cf, 2b, 3b and Im sure thee other outfield positions and might be a possible for the 40 man.
there's a blurb that bp has
that I saw on another site. since it’s paid info, i won’t copy and paste. short of it is that they aren’t high on him and think he’s a middle reliever. nothing new, just a recent blurb.
Just
got a call from my brother who attended the Mesa game today. He said Cashner was tremendous today, overpowering hitters. He said that Cashner overpowered Domonic Brown the Philies number 1 prospect and Chase D’Arnaud one of the Pirates top prospects who both struck out and had their bats shattered in their other at bats. My brother he went behind the plate near the scouts and that Cashners fast ball was in the 94 to 99 mph range and that his Cb or slider was very powerful buckling D’Arnaud knees who he said that he flinched when Cashner threw it. He also said that Conger missed a fb from Cashner that was 98 and threw it right by him without Conger getting his glove on the ball.
Cashner has a good shot of playing a role with the Cubs in 2010

Sigh...
In my estimation Jeff Samardizija is little more than a potential middling middle reliever of the mold of a Jon Leicester or Kevin Hart. If you remove the fact that he was a two-sport star at Notre Dame and received a humongous signing bonus nobody would much be talking about him anymore.
"Cubs will win 79 to 83 games." BLou (7/21/09)
I somewhat disagree .
He’d still be discussed, but the entire subject would be different. Shark would be working in AAA or already in the majors as a reliever and considered to have an outside chance to develop into a closer.
The Cubs, if he hadn’t been traded, would not be investing any more time into his development as a starter. Because of the contract and the NTC, time hasn’t run out on the starting experiment, yet.
if this was still new to me, i wouldn't understand
Agreed!!!
BLou you’re right. If he didn’t get that fat bonus we would be hearing far less of this guy. I can’t see him ever closing. He still walks way too many guys. This guy needs to concentrate on 2 pitches. I was sick and tired of hearing about how he is working on this pitch and that pitch in the minors. I don’t see this guy starting or relieving for the Cubs out of spring training.
Jeff is a perfect example
of a player with high potential who has no business on the Cubs right now. With a career WHIP of 1.60 and a high HR rate, he hasn’t shown any evidence he deserves a spot on the roster.
I wish the Cubs wouldn’t treat him as if he just needs a little polish. If he were not from ND, I can’t imagine he wouldn’t be riding a bus for a few years earning a trip to Wrigley. I wish him the best of luck, but there are a number of pitchers much more deserving in the system.
If you like Selig's handling of the steroid issue, you'll love his choice for next Cub owner.
I continue to think Samardzija is our fifth starter next season
The Cubs need a fifth starter, and I think Hendry is on a “prove the doubters wrong” mission when it comes to Shark. I agree that he is probably a middle reliever at the end of the day, but I’m prepared for a month or two of really bad starting pitching from him next year.
Just say no to players named Aaron on the Cubs.
That's what bothers me
I think Hendry is on a "prove the doubters wrong" mission when it comes to Shark.
I think you hit it square on the head with your comment. When Hendry is on a mission like that, any semblance of a meritocracy gets defenestrated. (I just felt like using the word.)

I flog Hendry as much as the next guy, but in the case of Samardzija, I believe
it’s less a case of proving others wrong and more of exhausting all effort to mold him into the starter they thought they signed given the expenditure.
I realize there is a fine line between the two, but in this case, I believe economics, not ego are driving the decisions.
Silent applause for making me look up a word through a blog comment. I am humbled.
if this was still new to me, i wouldn't understand
And you thought all we could say was "de-fense" ;-)
You are probably correct in that the money is a bigger motivating factor than Hendry’s ego in continuing this experiment.
However, if Samardzija is anointed the fifth starter over potentially more deserving candidates, I think it becomes a function of both the money and the ego.
The contract is a sunk cost; there’s no sound logic in making it worse by giving someone a slot that they don’t deserve. If he earns it, great – but that seems a dubious prospect based on his body of work to date. If he doesn’t earn it, then the smarter move would be to send him to Des Moines when camp breaks and let him work on being a starter until he demonstrates that he has a legitimate chance to get major league hitters out consistently – or until there is a need for an arm that cannot be easily filled elsewhere.
I’m just concerned that he’s going to be #5 unless he gets completely lit up in S-T.

I hope you're wrong that he's slotted already as #5.
I’d prefer everyone is looking at Shark’s performance in the Mexican League and other offseason work to determine if he’s earned the right to compete for the #5 slot with Marshall, Gorz, or anyone else they bring along.
if this was still new to me, i wouldn't understand
I wouldn't say that he's already slotted - but I'm thinking he's being given the edge
And I hope that I’m wrong, too.

I don't think he's "slotted".
First, we don’t know what move(s) the Cubs might make once the offseason trading/free agency binge begins to address the probable departure of Harden.
Also, Gorzelanny would likely have a leg up on Samardzija. You know, from having pitched better and being lefthanded and all.

Oh, Al. Being left-handed is so 2008!
In all seriousness, I don’t think he’s penciled in, but I do believe that he’s being given an edge. I’m basing that on Piniella’s comments at the end of the season and the history of how he’s been handled.

They hope he becomes part of the rotation
but that is a long way from saying they have him at the top of the list.

How many times do you remember a team's management publicly saying
That they hoped someone would compete for a spot in the rotation the next year?
Once again, I’m not saying that they have him penciled in. But my belief is that he does have an edge.

But isn't the economics thing part of the ego thing?
Shark got a huge contract, and right now Hendry looks downright stupid for giving it (and other contracts I know). He’s trying to save face instead of looking at yet another draft bust.
Just say no to players named Aaron on the Cubs.
I agree the contract looks silly. Did at the time and does now.
However, I believe there is a distinction between Hendry’s ego driving the need to keep Shark in development toward becoming a starter and the financial. Hendry has walked away from other blunders where talent didn’t match contract (Gathright) and is has not managed any part of the MB fiasco, to date, in a way save his own face.
Keeping Shark in development as a starter doesn’t hinder his development down the road as a reliever. It just seems to keep him from being a relief solution now or honing his skills as a reliever.
if this was still new to me, i wouldn't understand
I agree...
…with the money they have committed to this guy, they should be giving him every opportunity to show the investment wasn’t a waste.
Clearly, he needs to upgrade the quality of his breaking ball (a lot of times, it’s only a spinner) and he needs better command in general. Could he improve enough to be a starter? Sure, he could, but he has a ways to go and he probably is looking more like a reliever than a starter unless there is big time improvement.

Which I suppose he’d consider waiving if given a shot to stat.

Why the NT clause...

it was probably necessary in order for him to give up football
think about it – you’re a big-time college football star and most assuredly are looking at going high in the NFL Draft. Would you give that up to go play for the likes of Royals, Padres, Pirates, etc.? Probably not.
Ahh… but if you had the chance to play for your boyhood favorite team, the Cubs? Probably (and obviously) so.
So without the NTC, Shark probably doesn’t sign.
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
IMO...
…far too much to ask for with a player that hasn’t thrown pitch one in professional ball.
Hendry should have said we have already guaranteed you a spot on the 40 man, and are paying you a boatload of money, take it or leave it.
"I don't like them fellas that drive in two runs but let in three" Casey Stengel
then he would have left it
which of course now – in hindsight – might have you jumping for joy. If so, I’m curious – did you have the same opinion of Shark back when he was drafted? And are you saying, just as a matter of policy, no NTCs for draftees?
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
Yes I did...
…and I think this created a bad prescedent.
What Shark got the dough he did, on top of a guaranteed 40 man roster spot and a NTC, it turned a lot of heads in the baseball world.
You don’t see this everyday (if ever) for a guy who never threw a professional pitch.
"I don't like them fellas that drive in two runs but let in three" Casey Stengel
Shark, his father and brother
were White Sox fans until the Cubs drafted him. But you are correct that the money and contract he got were because of his status as a highly touted NFL 1st round pick. Remember the Cubs drafted him, I believe, in the 5th or 6th round. He got a lot more money than that draft position would warrant, but he dropped that far because people thought he would go NFL.
He did drop...
…because of the NFL thing, but he ended up getting 1st round money with a guaranteed 40 man roster spot and a NT on top of it which is unusual to say the least.
This is a big year for him since he has been around for a few years now. If he doesn’t become more polished pretty quick, this may end up being a bad decision that cost the club a lot of money.
"I don't like them fellas that drive in two runs but let in three" Casey Stengel
Agree 100%
This is yet another example of where objective analysis is lost on Jim Hendry and his ignorant stubborness takes hold. Fact is Hendry is not a very bright man. God how I wish Tom Ricketts would just cut to the chase and get rid of him now.
"Cubs will win 79 to 83 games." BLou (7/21/09)
That a GM takes a chance and misses on a player is no
evidence on either side of whether the individual is bright. Perhaps it judges his ability to evaluate the free agent market or drafting prospects.
Similar to judging a person’s intelligence on throwaway comments on the internet.

Like
Bring in Sandy Alderson like you promised three months ago?
It's still possible that...
… Sandy Alderson (or someone like him) will be brought in to oversee all the baseball operations (not replace Hendry).
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
That
would be the worst guy you could bring into this situation. Without the steroids his clubs have and theories have been nothing, even his clones have failed miserably, Ricciardi, Depodesta, Fuson. I’m not counting Beane in this mess because he’s done his own thing and will opt off and do other things with his club, now embraces high school players and pitchers.
I'm not specifically pushing for Alderson...
… in fact, I agree with you. I’m saying someone LIKE him may be brought in to oversee all the baseball departments.
