Umpires, economics and aging
A very cool look at how our current umpiring system may be partially responsible for the poor performance of veteran umps. Seeing just how different their strike zones are from each other is downright shocking.

Interesting stuff
Of course, the K/BB ratio isn’t all-ecompassing, but you have to start somewhere. (C.B. Bucknor was near the middle, for example.)
I do agree with the proposed solution of better wages for minor league umps and more pressure on MLB umps to perform well.

All I know is that the umpiring has gone down the tubes
It is horrifying the frequency of bad calls in recent years. Heck, an “all-star” group of 6 umpires can’t even get check swings called right in the World Series?!?!
If Bud the Dud Selig had any sort of vertebrae then he would be taking a flamethrower to the umpires union and demanding accountability for performance. These guys need to be tested and graded out each year. And, they should be required to meet minimum standards of physical conditioning.
