Your Chance To Question Tom Ricketts

I've been given the opportunity to attend the news conference introducing Tom Ricketts as the new team owner tomorrow morning.

I don't know whether I'll get a chance to even ask a question, but if I do, I'd like to have a sense of what are the most important things BCB readers want to know.

So post your thoughts here -- I'll take some of the best ones with me and if no one else asks them and I get a chance to, I'll try to get at least one question in.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Budget to make a splash in the Winter market.

If Florida put together a more attractive package ($, facilities, etc.) than Arizona

would you consider relocating there for Spring Training?

I’m sure you’d have your own way of wording it, but bottom line – I’d like to know:
1) If he will give serious considerations to serious offers from Florida, and
2) If he has a personal preference one way or another

Ooooh. Such a heavy responsibility! Let me think. Let me think.

OK. Here goes Al.

Is he going make attending a Cubs game more family-affordable? Cost for a family of four to attend a Cubs game once school lets out now is sky high.

Let’s be honest. Families most often attend as a group AFTER Memorial Day and BEFORE schools start up again after Labor Day. That’s when the Cubs game tickets are at their highest.

I understand it’s a business. But the Cubs are losing young fans (aka: the next generation) as a result.

My two cents.

Now only 12,859 on the "Cubs Season Tickets Waiting List"...

I might ask if he's at least going to hold the line on ticket prices for 2010...

… or maybe make some selective reductions.

As a life long Cubs fan

What changes do you see in the future of this franchise and will he make more of a priority of development within the minor league system. ie Hiring more scouts like the Dodgers and other teams in order to find future talent for the Major league level.

I'm curious about the debt services stuff.

Will it impact payroll in the next few years. If so, how?

I have two:

1) Will there be an effort to have an organizational-wide philosophy, i.e. “the Cub way to play”? I am tired of seeing players coming through the system not knowing how to play fundamental baseball (Theriot’s running, Soto not knowing the rule about using the mask, etc, etc.)

2) Can we please get rid of the softball jerseys, at least at home?

I know people hate the blue jerseys

Would just allowing Z to wear them be a fair deal? I agree it got out of hand this season, but I love seeing Z pitch in the blue uni.

Just say no to players named Aaron on the Cubs.

by nji232 on Oct 29, 2009 5:26 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd be ok with limiting it

But I’m not a big fan of special treatment. Dump ‘em at home, let each pitcher wear ’em 10 times if they want . . . I don’t know. But hell, they wore them more often than not, it seemed.

The first is the one I'm most curious about.

And if he wants an organizational-wide philosophy, what teams has he studied that he believes will make the best model to follow?

A couple come immediately to mind.

The first one is pretty general and will probably elicit a pretty stock reply, but maybe ask him something like: What should the average, everyday die-hard Cubs fan expect from the Ricketts family? Maybe as a follow-up/point of clarification, you could add: How will it differ from past owners?

A more specific question might be: Will you be looking to bring more statistical analysis into the Cubs organization?

Will Jim Hendry try to get Maddux to be special advisor to the Cubs

now that the Padres ( for whom he worked last spring training) have changed personnel ? Ok a little off topic but I have a one track mind on certain things.

That is the critical quesiton that has to be proactively addressed. Because unti the Cub become reasonably adept at developing talent from within no amount of blank checks can get this team to a World Series.

Wrigley Renovations and PSLs

Wrigley Field is obviously going to need some substantial renovations and upgrades in the not-too-distant future. Does Ricketts foresee PSLs as a way to generate revenue toward such a renovation?

by wrigley_boy on Oct 29, 2009 8:14 PM CDT reply actions

PSLs will definitely be in the future equation

This is the great thing if you are the Ricketts’ family….there will forever be insatiable appetite for tickets to Cub games. The Ricketts will almost be able to set their price for those PSLs.

Insatiable Appetite?

Then how do you explain the thousands of empty seats toward the end of the season—even when the weather was good? The new reality is that many people cannot afford marked-down tickets to a game—let alone expensive PSLs.

Eamus Catuli!

by wrigley_boy on Oct 30, 2009 7:30 AM CDT up reply actions

Insatiable appetite is a little over the top.

But there are over 100,000 names on the waiting list for season tickets. Even if the Cubs started charging $50 a year to stay on the list (with maybe a little bone thrown for the $50 like the right to buy a small number of tickets ahead of the general sale), they’d probably get at least 2/3 of those people to stay on the list.

by Al Yellon on Oct 30, 2009 7:42 AM CDT up reply actions

Agreed

And many other pro franchises have had success with a fee to remain on the waiting list.

But there’s a big difference between doing that as opposed asking people to fork over $5,000 – $10,000 per seat just for the right to buy season tickets. I can’t think of too many (or any) teams that are just venturing into the PSL market in this economy.

Eamus Catuli!

by wrigley_boy on Oct 30, 2009 8:40 AM CDT up reply actions

I think in the current economy...

… it will be difficult for the Cubs (or any team) to do that for the first time. I think it will happen, but it could be 5-10 years away.

Baseball Operations

Will Jim Hendry continue to be at the top of the pyramid when it comes to the organization and baseball operations, or does he forsee bringing someone in who will either have oversight over Hendry?

by dmlichte on Oct 29, 2009 8:49 PM CDT reply actions

Seems fairly certain that 2010 will be a year of transition ....

Hendry is going to get a pass in 2010. But I fully expect he will be ash-canned after next season. It really is too bad however that we have to “waste” 2010.
