I was gonna come on here and say the same thing...

Could project as a solid buy low target with potential big talent when healthy

possibly

Wow,

Without doing any research, I seem to remember him being a somewhat promising young pitcher for the Giants a few years ago. I’m surprised they would just give up on him like that.

I'll pass

Soft-tossing righty (fb average in the mid-80’s to upper 80’s). Never rebounded from injuries. Might as well see Mitch Atkins pitch instead (b/w the two that is).

Agreed

There isn’t much to Lowry’s repetoire or velocity to get excited about.

Agreed 2

Unless he comes at a minimum salary, I don’t see much to get excited about.

um

Lowry is left-handed.

um read below

i acknowledged my mistake already.

I didn't realize he was 29.

For a minor league deal with a spring training invite? Sure, why not.

Anything more than that, nope.

Oh, and he’s a soft-tossing lefty, not a soft-tossing righty. In fact, in 1992 the Cubs invited a guy with a very similar style and similar injury history to spring training. They decided they didn’t want to keep him, and offered him a minor league coaching job. He declined and said he thought he could still pitch.

That guy is still pitching. Some kid named Jamie Moyer.

Nevertheless, I think Lowry might be worth a flyer.

not sure what i was thinking

But yes, he’s a lefty.

Sure, if he comes on a minor league deal with a spring training invite, basically a free look, then fine. If it costs anything more than that, I just don’t see the point. Right now, he’s basically … basically Sean Marshall. I should’ve qualified and said that If it costs anything more than the minimum, I’ll pass.

by toonsterwu on Oct 30, 2009 10:58 PM CDT up reply actions

thinking about it, better comparison is that

he’s basically James Russell-lite in stuff, but maybe a bit more consistency/mental toughness (although you don’t really know with the injury).

by toonsterwu on Oct 30, 2009 11:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Is he suing the Giants

or contemplating it relating to his injuries/treatment? I thought I heard something like that -

by doofus cubs guy on Oct 31, 2009 1:37 PM CDT reply actions

his agents are filing some sort of claim

as they believe he was misdiagnosed or mistreated, something like that.

by toonsterwu on Oct 31, 2009 3:13 PM CDT up reply actions

i luvs dumpster dives.

if it’s on the cheap, send him to iowa and see if he has anything left.

by tim815 on Oct 31, 2009 1:44 PM CDT reply actions

see

that sounds good on paper … but sending him could mean, say, putting Russell in the pen. Right now, Gaub/Mathes seem the likely pen lefties down there. I want Russell to get another rotation look. He’s basically Lowry (at least, the young Lowry) – plus change, good curve, decent fastball.

by toonsterwu on Oct 31, 2009 3:13 PM CDT up reply actions

For some reason...

…I remember Noah Lowry as being the first pitcher to face Kosuke Fukudome in ‘08 Spring Training. And I believe he hit Dome with a pitch. Other than that, I don’t really have an opinion on this. I’ll go with what toonster is saying – if the Cubs can get a free look at him, sure. Otherwise, nothing to get excited about.
