Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

So what was YOUR record this year?

Now that the season's over, we can compare our personal records: What the Cubs' record was in games you witnessed in person.

I was very lucky this year (or, perhaps, unlucky, depending how you look at it). I had to burn extra vacation time I had accumulated, so I went to more games than I usually would.

I went to 20 games this year, and my record was much like the Cubs' overall one: 11-9. The breakdown:

4-0 in Washington

2-0 in Pittsburgh

4-3 in Milwaukee

1-1 in Cincinnati

0-1 in St. Louis

0-1 in Philadelphia

... and 0-3 in Detroit (ouch).

Last year I made it to 15 games and was 10-5, including 4-0 in that "Milwaukee Massacre" series at the end of July.

I could only make it to the last series against the Giants, and managed to see three fairly impressive victories, including Z’s masterful performance.

I saw the Cubs walkoff win vs Cleveland, and I saw the massacre of the Astros following the night of Soriano’s walkoff GS. Not a bad season at all from a games attended standpoint

I too was there for the Cubs walkoff win in game 1 against Cleveland that was nearly rained out (still haven’t called in the hail damage to my car while I sat on the Kennedy), and for a late season game against Houston that the Cubs beat pretty easily. Thus far, since seeing my first Cub win with my future wife a couple years back, I haven’t been to a losing game since, but there’s been a couple walk off wins in extra innings.

1-1 in Milwaukee
1-0 vs. MIN
0-1 vs. HOU (on a homestand where the Cubs went 6-1)
0-1 vs. WAS (!)

Not only was this the fewest games I’ve gone to in several years, it was the least memorable. I usually can remember the details better than this.

I was thrilled to score a ticket for the Fourth-of-July thanks to my cousin who bought a block as part of her wedding festivities. This is my best record in many years. I have seen the Cubs come out and underperform against the Giants too many times. Last year was the start of my new vow to see at least one at Wrigley every year, but it was a loss on a bad Z outing.

Williams son, John Henry made the decision to have his father’s body taken to Alcor Co. for freezing, setting off a battle with his half-sister, who said her father had wanted to be cremated. The matter was settled in December 2002, when Bobby Jo Williams Ferrell, Ted Williams’ oldest daughter, dropped her objections.

I don't care how long you've been around, you'll never see it all.

by Dou on Oct 5, 2009 4:22 PM CDT reply actions

It didn't work out this year

I live about three hours from Chicago. I try to get to as many games in Milwaukee as possible. I like Miller Park in general; I like the tailgating scene outside it; and my parents like to go to games, too, but they’re in their 70s and probably can’t handle the Wrigley experience these days. In Milwaukee, they can drive right up to the door and take the esclator to their seat.

My cousin and I usually make one Cubs far-afield road trip a season; this year it was Washington and Philly. My college roommate lives in St. Louis. And my brother-in-law scheduled work around games in Cincy and Detroit, so all I had to do was get there (not bad drives from here) and everything except my ticket was paid for.

Pittsburgh? Great city, great ballpark and almost guaranteed to see a series victory.

I will say I unofficially boycotted Wrigley in 2005 and ’06, not vowing to return until Cubs management got serious about fielding a winner. They did, and I returned in 2007 for the September series against the Reds (great game, great atmosphere).

Sorry for the long-winded reply.

If we go, I think we’ll make a mini-vacation out of it and head up to British Columbia for a few days, then come home Sunday or Monday.

Busch Stadium III is pretty sweet. Probably not as nice as Pittsburgh but nicer than most. Except for all the Cardinals fans, of course.

“Pittsburgh? Great city, great ballpark and almost guaranteed to see a series victory.”

Not a winner for me. I flew in for just one game – Tues June 30 – and flew back to Chicago the next day, The Cubs lost the game I saw. Great experience, though. Got cheap – $49 each way – flights with Southwest and used $93 I had in reserve on them, so really only cost about $30 out of pocket.Took the bus to/from downtown. Got the Hilton for $45 on Priceline. Walked to/from PNC Park. Spent $35 on a seat five rows in back of the Cubs dugout. Loved the 24 hours I spent there except, of course, for the loss!

NEXT year is THE year!

by WBdogs1 on Oct 5, 2009 11:42 PM CDT up reply actions

You really threaded a needle

I think that was their only loss of the year in the ’Burgh.

Did the same thing (cheap plane tix on Southwest, Priceline hotel, $27 on good seats at the game). Had enough left over for a Primanti Brothers’ sandwich, a Tessaro’s hamburger and mixed-grill breakfast at DeLuca’s.

The fans there were among the friendliest and most baseball knowledgable I’ve ever encountered. Too bad there weren’t more of them.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Oct 5, 2009 11:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Completely agreed on the Pittsburgh experience.

Driving there is actually fairly easy from Chicago — made it home from there last month in less than eight hours.

It's not bad from Chicago

From here, it’s almost 600 miles. That makes it kind of a jump ball between driving and flying, particularly for a quick trip.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Oct 6, 2009 12:03 PM CDT up reply actions

True.

I just googlemapped it. From my house to PNC Park is 464 miles by car.

3-0 this year

I got to go to the series against the Astros in Chicago in late July. I had tickets to the 3 that they won, and didn’t to the one that they lost. I am 6-0 all time at Wrigley, 10-2 all time at Cincinatti, and 6-0 all time at Atlanta. I plan on going to Opening Day next year, so we should be in good shape for that one.

Went to the last game. At least saw Fuld’s homer.

by BleedsbluinMI on Oct 5, 2009 7:52 PM CDT reply actions

Strange but true fact:

Fuld’s 2 RBI (both of which came in that game) are the fewest EVER in a season by a player with an .800 or better OPS (minimum 100 plate appearances).

I ran that situation through bb-ref's play index.

Here are the results. The next fewest total of RBI for a player meeting those qualifications (115+ PA, the number Fuld had, and .800+ OPS) is 7, by Aaron Guiel in 2005.

My sons first baseball game… …he hated the cheering because it freaked him out. I hated the cheering because the Rockies were whooping us :(

Second roughest season ever, first being 2000 when I went 2-5. At least this year’s team lost with SOME dignity.

Not as good as it sounds. One of the wins was the Brewers game when Dempster broke his toe. So even though it was a win, it was a bigger loss. I saw them in Cincinnati when they lost 4-0. That’s the game that started their downfall – they lost 7 of 8 games.

I guess there’s no need for me ask anyone to send me season tickets. I’ll be lucky if they don’t put my picture on the wall at of the ticket office and ban me from buying any tickets next year.

3-0 this year

While I was in the city of Chicago July 1-3, 2-0 when I went to the game.

The Cubs have a great record when I am just in the city of Chicago.

2008 5-1 I was there April 3-5 and June 10-12

2007 6-0 June 22-27

2006 1-1 July 1-2

2005 I can’t remember what games I went to

2004 4-0 July 1-4

I am 19-2 since 2004, does anybody want to offer me a job, I will move to Chicago permanently.

0-3.

One loss in San Diego (Kevin Gregg blowup), Los Angeles (Russell Martin grand slam game), and San Francisco (Matt Cain outduels Randy Wells).

The sad thing is, I had been 5-0 going into this year.

Saw the Cleveland come from behind game, and the game where we scored 17 by the 4th.
Unfortunately, my first game was postponed. More unfortunately, my first “real” game of the season was the Bradley debacle on 6/12 vs. the Twins. What’s worse is that was on my birthday.

My 2008 Christmas wish list includes this jersey. In Hendry We Trust! Current 2009 payroll.

10-6, better than last year's 9-7

I saw the last game of the year (Fuld’s HR was about 10 rows directly in front of me).

My favorite game I saw was the extra-inning Saturday game against the Indians. It felt weird cheering for Wood’s failure.

Honorable mention goes to the May 3rd game: my birthday and the Jenkins/Maddux ceremony.

Didn’t make it to any away games this year, but I hope to go to STL and MIL next year.

had tickets to but did not attend the 9/17 and 10/3 games against the brewers and d-backs respectively, which would have put me at 2-4 (2-3 at wrigley).

17-8 at Wrigley

3-4 on the road. Most memorable games were: 5/3, 6/19, 7/2, 7/11 & 9/11 at Wrigley, for various reasons; 9/21 in Milw…well for none other than they blew out the BrewCrew. I remain unbeaten at Miller Park.

After an unbelievable

and surely never to be repeated line last year of 17-3 -

this year, Bruce, the baseball gods (and several Cub players) humbled me with a 4-12 year – including a loss to the Bucs in the last series with them.

I’m glad I didn’t go on the road, either.

20-15

8-2 first 10, 9-6 next 15, 3-7 last 10… and I’m from IOWA!!! Pretty freakin’ hardcore eh? My top 10 games this year ranks this way:
10 – 9/29 Cubs beat Pirates 6-0 for my last W in 2009.
9 – 6/26 Cubs beat Sox at the Cell 5-4 on my b-day.
8 – 7/29 Cubs beat Astros 12-0.
7 – 4/13 Cubs beat Rockies on home opener 4-0.
6 – 5/16 Cubs win on walk-off hit vs Astros 5-4.
5 – 7/3 Cubs win on walk-off walk in 10th vs Brewers 2-1.
4 – 4/12 Cubs beat Brewers 8-5 at Miller Park.
3 – 4/17 Cubs beat Cardinals 8-7 in wild affair.
2 – 6/18 Cubs comeback vs Sox and win on Soriano’s walk-off duck snort 6-5.
1 – 7/27 The first walk-off Cubs home run I attended and the longest innings played game in a 5-1 13th inning Soriano grand slam vs Astros.
As for the worst games…
5 and 4 – 9/30 Cubs swept in double-header vs Pirates.
3 – 7/4 Brewers beat Cubs 11-2.
2 – 6/23 My first walk-off home run I attended was on the wrong end of a Tigers 5-4 win at Detroit.
1 – 9/3 Soriano drops the ball and it rolls all the way to the wall. Cubs get shutout vs Sox at home in the make-up game.

5-0, with a road win in Pittsburgh. The trip to Pittsburgh was the best part of the season for me. PNC Park was beautifull, and all of the 14K fans were nice too… most of them were Cubs fans though :)
