The Best Cubs Game of September/Oct 2009
Hey at least they finished five games above .500. The first winning season without a playoff appearance since 2004. Now we get to root for any team that faces the Cardinals. Who would have thought that a year removed from being swept by the Dodgers, we would be rooting for them to do the same thing to the Cardinals.
18 wins in the final 32 games. Ironically, the Cubs started winning when Soriano and ultimately Bradley went home. It just seems like the Cubs fans were always ahead of the curve at making decisions that should have been made a long time ago. Decisions such as moving Gregg out of the closers role, how many blown saves did Lou need to see before Marmol took over? I remember listening to SportsCentral on WGN radio in June/July listening to fans say move Soriano out of the leadoff spot, get Bradley out of there, etc. I'm not saying Lou did a bad job because there are so many things that just didn't go right this year. I'm not going to make a huge book about it right now because you know the rest.
Right now voting can be done for the final 18 wins of the year. After the conclusion of the World Series, I'll probably create a poll for the best Cubs games of 2009. Don't worry, I won't include all 83 wins in that poll.

I voted for the Baker game.
But Z’s two-hitter is a very close second.

i agree.
but that was the only game I made it to this year…so I may have been biased. But it was still a great game!

My thoughts exactly.
I did give momentary consideration to the 13-7 win over the Brewers where D. Lee tore it up, though.
God bless him, he was money this year.

any chance anyone has a DVD/VHS copy of this game?

i do!
I record EVERY Cubs game throughout the year. I proudly have my own archive. That would be nice to show my kids or my future grandkids in the future some games from years past which would be today’s games. Hopefully by then I’ll be teaching them a forgotten concept of waiting ’til next year, after the world championship drought has long past ended.
I could also show them the best Cubs game of the month voted on by all of you!

Maybe the new stat guy...
can do a regression chart that will tell us when the best games.
The sun will shine in '69
I voted for the game from last saturday too
cause I actually got to go, I had great seats (the scalpers didn’t even put up a fight), and I got to see Randy Wells pitch a good game.

I voted for the last win of the season...
…just because I was so happy for Randy Wells.
Why did Bob Brenly mention your name on the air?

because i met him
I met him on the night of September 9th when he came through the drive thru of my restaurant. He stopped his car in the parking lot and I went out to make sure it was him. I told him I bring my sign to the games that says “Give it to a kid and go Cubs!” We got in a pretty good conversation. Apparently he was driving up to Cedar Rapids to watch Michael Brenly play in a playoff game.
Jack Brickhouse: "Hey! Hey!"
Harry Caray: "Holy Cow!"
Vince Lloyd: "The Chicago Cubs are on the Air!"
Len Casper: "Oh Baby!"
Bob Brenly: "Give it to a Kid!"
Ron Santo: "YES!", "All Right!, let's do it!", "Oh No!", "Oh jeez come on!" AND...

Now that you mention it
I’ve been told that L&B have mentioned my name on the air, as well. A buddy of mine is both a huge baseball fan and a camera operator at Turner Field. I called him before a Cubs game to see if he wanted to sit and watch it or if was working it. Turns out he was working, and his normal assignment is away team booth camera. So I told him to say hi to L&B for me, then I thought better of it and asked him to ask L&B to say hi to my dad.
Apparently, they did and said hi to me, too. Of course, WGN’s feed was blacked out in Atlanta, so I never got to see it. My dad tells me he has it on tape somewhere – one of these days I’m going to have to watch it.

Wow, cool story.
So did you just recognize his voice when he ordered his food?

no but
I recognized his face when I saw him in at the window and luckily he stopped before pulling back out onto the road so I could go out and meet him.

I voted for Sept. 24
That game felt the most “2008 Cubsesque” of the bunch, and it dealt a crippling blow to the Giants’ post-season chances. Win-win-win in my book.

Close one to call
Had to give it to the Z game because it reminded me of how good Z can be when he’s locked in. Baker’s gutty 2-out, 2-strike homer could have just as easily gotten my vote.
