Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

I figured I'd post the list of free agents for the upcoming offseason so that perhaps we could start some sort of semi-logical conversations about who the Cubs should pick up or avoid.

Kotsay is interesting if he could play 2/3 of the games.

I’m hoping they avoid any player requiring a NTC or overpay for anyone coming of a career year.

I don’t see any SS or 2B who are the right combination of upside youth or cost effective veteran.

Most importantly, I don’t want to see the Cub front office make moves for the sake of making moves. ie Gathright, Miles, Heilman.

if this was still new to me, i wouldn't understand

I also see the Cubs sticking with what they've already got at 2B/SS...

…and obviously I see the Cubs dealing Bradley. The Bradley trade will say a lot about what the Cubs do this offseason, and as such I see it being done quite early in the offseason. More than likely before the end of November, maybe earlier. If they can unload him (and perhaps a prospect/cash) for Dunn, that’d solve quite a bit. If they cant land a Dunn type of player, I dont see them signing anyone big.

I personally think the Cubs will try to revamp the bench a bit. If I controlled the purse strings, I’d sign Ankiel (1MM/YR for 1-2 yrs), resign Grabow (4M/yr for 3yrs), and throw some money at a starting pitching project (Bedard?) while letting Harden walk if he wont take a discount.

With a healthy Soriano, Ramirez, and Lee, along with Soto being in shape and Baker for a full season, I think the offense will rebound quite a bit last year. The problem was the bullpen and Grabow would do wonders to fix that.

Here’s a thought… if the Cubs cant unload Bradley for a bat, why not try and trade him straightup for Wood? Seems like a decent deal for both teams.

One thing you learned as a Cubs fan: when you bought you ticket, you could bank on seeing the bottom of the ninth.

I think our best options

are pretty much in house, especially the starting rotation and bullpen. Re-sign Grabow is the only free agent of ours I would advocate resigning. Among FA’s, maybe Tejada?
