Last Out to First Pitch – The 2009-10 Offseason IT'S HAPPENING!!!??? Contest
Listed at the bottom of this fanpost are 15 events that may (or may not) occur this offseason. Your challenge is to arrange them in order of likelihood of happening, most to least. Similar to last year’s free-agency contest, your ranking will be weighted. In other words, your top choice (the one you think is most likely to happen) will be worth 15 points – your bottom choice (the one you think is least likely to happen) will be worth 1 point.
Here's where it gets fun. As you’ll see, there are quite a few events involving Milton Bradley. Obviously not all of them are going to happen, so you could hedge your bets by ranking them close together if you’re unsure on how the MB saga will end. On the other hand, if you’re so sure you know how it will end, put that one at/near the top and the others at the bottom of your rankings.
Other Ground Rules:
- The contest begins after the last out of the 2009 World Series and ends with the first pitch of the 2010 major league season.
- Points are accumulated only if the event happens.
- If an event occurs before the last out, i.e. someone pulls a "Boras", then said event will be removed from the contest and no points awarded for that event.
- If there is some dispute as to whether or not an event "happened" or the definition of said event, I will certainly consider any and all viewpoints, but in the end – my contest, my call.
Please submit your entry by posting a comment below. Right now, deadline for entries is the last out of the 2009 World Series. But if the Yankees manage to win this thing in 5 games, I may extend the deadline by a day or so, provided of course, none of these events occur. If they do, then - in the interests of fairness - any entries submitted after that point will not be accepted.
I will track all entries and provide occasional updates throughout the off-season, as well as announce the final results shortly after Opening Day 2010. The person with the highest point total will receive an official MLB baseball hit out of Wrigley Field from my collection. And just to keep things interesting, the person with the lowest point total will receive an official minor league baseball from my collection – sufficiently grass-stained and scuffed-up to appropriately reflect said achievement (or lack thereof).
Please post any questions in the comments and I'll be happy to respond.

interesting, I'll take a stab
1. Cubs make an announcement on new ST location. Sort of have to … I’m guessing the Cubs will stay in Mesa, but they’ll likely announce a new location.
2. MB is traded or released before Cubs convention. I think he’s gone before January in all honesty. This has to be a quick move, even if they are patient the rest of the offseason.
3. MB is traded and Cubs will eat some portion of the contract. I think he’s good as gone … and I just have a hard time not seeing the Cubs swallow some money. But I guess it’s possible that a bad contract deal has us taking on more.
4. Ryan Theriot is the starting shortstop. I am 90% certain on this, but one does wonder what would happen if Olney is right about JJ Hardy potentially being non-tendered.
5. Cubs broadcasting team stays intact. Don’t see Brenly leaving, so unless something happens on the radio side. I don’t know enough on each specific individual to know if something might happen, otherwise I might push them higher.
6. MLB expands instant replay capabilities. I think Bud will be pressured to figure something out.
7. Randy Wells finishes higher than Colby Rasmus in ROY voting. Tough call … guess is no, as Colby had more name recognition.
8. Cubs sell naming rights to Wrigley Field. Revenue streams.
9. Cubs install additional scoreboard facilities. They’ve emphasized the experience.
10. Aaron Miles is on the 25 man roster. I seriously hope it doesn’t happen … but I could see it I guess.
11. Cubs offer arbitration to Rich Harden. I don’t see them going down that road, and I think the decision’s been made in all honesty. They may try to resign him, but arb? Not sure.
12 MB is traded for players only. I’ve got a tough time seeing a MB deal without some sort of money involved, to or from. Just don’t see the Cubs as being in a great position on this negotiation.
13. Cubs lower ticket prices on some seats. Doesn’t seem likely after the Ricketts intro. I’m assuming we are talking about a consistent lowering and not some random event lowering.
14. MB is on opening day roster or 40 man. Just don’t see any way he’s on this roster come opening day.
15. Cubs hire top level executive to oversee Hendry. This offseason? Don’t see it.
I dunno...
13. Cubs lower ticket prices on some seats. Doesn’t seem likely after the Ricketts intro. I’m assuming we are talking about a consistent lowering and not some random event lowering.
Ricketts also did mention the fact that he wanted to make the game affordable for families coming out to a ballgame. Leads me to believe that there’s a possibility that some tickets (maybe on the lower levels?) will see an increase and maybe the non-alcoholic section or other areas seeing decreases.

or tickets remain
and concessions go down
baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out
yes, I was thinking a consistent lowering of prices for a particular type of tickets, e.g. upper deck reserved
Actually, I was going to go with “raise ticket prices” originally, but then the Ricketts had that press conference and all but assured that was going to happen. So I went the lower route.
Admittedly this could be a tricky one to figure out, given the variable price levels they had last year (platinum, gold, silver, bronze). What I’m looking for here is some kind of “yes, we did raise ticket prices _% on average, but 15% of our seats are priced lower than last year” or something like that.
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
And a bit of advice to anyone else doing this....
Copy and paste the event list into a word document.
Makes it much easier to cut and paste the selections in your desired order.

Naming rights
Nobody, and I mean nobody, gives a horse’s patoot whether the Cubs sell the naming rights to Wrigley. Therefore the Ricketts should just cut to the chase and negotiate a great deal with somebody.
"Cubs will win 79 to 83 games." BLou (7/21/09)
Except for all
Of the people who have protested against it, you mean.
Yeah, nobody… not one single person cares….
perhaps it should say
not a single intelligent person who likes to see expanded payroll and winning baseball each year cares
Just say no to players named Aaron on the Cubs.
Exactly.
I’m as traditionalist as they come. But if naming rights brought $400 million for upgrading the park and possible future payroll increases? Bring it on.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
I'm not
But then again, I have an irrational hatred of clumsy usage of naming rights and a fear that that is what would happen:
Good –
AT&T Park
Citi Field
Miller Park
Busch Stadium
PNC Park
(Not overly intrusive… or wacky… doesn’t draw attention to itself because of the name)
Bad:
Petco Park
U.S. Cellular Field
Minute Maid Park
Tropicana Field
Comerica Park
University of Phoenix Stadium
….ugh
I don't get why AT&T Park and Citi Field get a pass.
I can maybe see why Miller and Busch are OK because they’re last names.

Broadcasting team
If they make an annoucement equivalent to “Santo will only do home games”, would that still fall under “intact”?
Good question...
Seeing as how Santo did not go on some road trips this past year, this kind of announcement wouldn’t be a complete surprise. Hmm….
.
Okay, if Santo only does home games and Dave Otto fills in like last year – team is “intact”.
.
Caveat: I need some help with the Keith Moreland situation. I know he did some games last year. Can someone refresh my mind with where, when, and why?

You want MORE JUDD???? ;-)
If the 3rd guy in is somebody new, then not “intact”. If it’s Otto (unlikely IMO), then still “intact”.
As for Mr. Moreland… I’m pretty sure the few games he did last year were purely as a sub for an under-the-weather Santo. But if the Cubs were to come out and say Moreland is 3rd guy in the booth or does all the away games instead of Ron, then to me, that’s a big enough change, i.e. not “intact”.
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
I remember liking Moreland in the booth...
…but I’m a little fuzzy on the details. I believe he was on the radio with Pat while Ron was out for health reasons. I can’t remember exactly when.

Had so much fun with this I asked Mr Casey to give it a shot.
It was funny. His first three answers were identical to mine. Then he had a couple that surprised me so much that I began to doubt some of the things I was most "sure" of. Now I don’t know what to put. Dang it-I had been so good about not reading everyone else’s answers so I wouldn’t be swayed. What did I have to ask him for?

yep - I hope it will be.
next three games – at Penn State, Iowa, at Michigan
That’s a helluva way to end a season and given the inconsistencies of Terrelle Marmol Pryor this year, I am not confident the Buckeyes will win out. But if they do, I don’t think anyone can argue they don’t deserve the Big 10 title.

… i’ve been so focused on Iowa i’d ignored what else OSU had going on… that is a hell of a schedule. I guess it gives me some hope that they’ll be so beat up from Penn St (or overlooking Iowa for their big rival in Michigan) that maybe we’ll have a slight advantage.
