The Top 10 Cubs Games of 2009

Now that the World Series is over (congratulations Yanks for the 27th time) and the MLB offseason officially begins exactly a month after the Cubs offseason began, I'm gonna go ahead and post my poll for the best Cubs games of 2009.  There were actually some pretty good games to remember this year... along with the pretty bad ones as well.  Sometimes it got to the point where to some of you, the best game (later in the year) was the game that didn't happen meaning the off-day in which we didn't have to see the Cubs load the bases with no outs and somehow not drive in a run.  I think it was the comments from the "Come here and vent" post in mid-August is a good example of my last sentence.

Star-divide

With all that said the Cubs did finish five games above .500, something the Pirates would love to have happen to them.  Plus, there's new light added for the 2010 campaign by the Ricketts family.  I can't wait to see what kind of tricks Mr. Ricketts has up his sleeve.  On a side note, I know this sounds kind of lame but I caught an episode of Roseanne the other night and there was a part where they looked into their family's future (remember these are the '90s) and one of the character's had a newspaper that read 2010 World Champion Cubs.  I got a good laugh out of it but at the same time It kind of put a spark in me now that 2010 is a couple months away and, you never know.

I have tabulated the top 5 games of each month this season voted on by the bcb community and with that, I've put together a poll including those 5 games from each month of 2009. Vote for your favorite, and if yours isn't on the list, leave it in the comments.

This thread looks a tad lonely...

The walk-off win against Houston was by far the most fun I had at the ballpark all season. I suspect many of the Cubs feel the same way.

oh and....

the walk-off wins were great, but, RJ being one of my faves, I loved the “rob Fielder’s GS” game….new season, new team, new hope….

That was probably the best game at Wrigley all year.

But I voted for Z’s two-hitter… the most dominant Cub pitching performance of 2009.

It's hard to believe after the season Soriano had that we're looking at a photo like that.

I was at that game too! My 66th Cubs game and I finally get to see a walk-off home run. If you were watching the game during ‘Go Cubs Go!’ I was the guy with the W flag on a stick acting like a drunk guy… even though I’m still not old enough to drink and no I wasn’t drunk either because I had to drive home that night.

Funny with the timing on that walk-off HR because I had been talking with my co-worker earlier that day how I never get to be attend a Cubs walk-off home run. Little did I know I was going to see one later that night!

I was there too!!!

It was one of the most exciting games I had ever been to…My nephew, who was with me, called that slam when Soriano came up to bat. That was my first walk off too, very cool to be there.

hmmmm

Can we just skip 2009 and pretend none of these games happened. That would be much more fun. But I would have to say either the Aram walkoff in April vs the Cards because I was there and then got to go to the Blackhawks playoff game later that night. Close second would be the Wood homecoming game.

In a word...

No. Painful years like this are as much a part of being a sports fan as championships. Sorry.

by Damen Jackson on Nov 10, 2009 10:07 AM CST up reply actions

well then

Someone should tell the Cubs. Because it’s pretty one sided for the painful years vs championship years.

Agreed

It makes the good years that much more enjoyable.

Soriano was pretty bad this year...

…but he did have a lot of big hits, as this list shows.

I voted for Aramis’ walkoff against the Cardinals. The weather was great that day and I got to throw back a homerun ball.

On second thought...

…I actually voted for the Soriano walkoff against the Sox. That win felt so good because of how terrible the Sox fans were that day. Loved hearing Hawk cry.

I voted for the Wood homecoming game

I was swayed by the fact that it was the one game that I made it to at Wrigley this year, and the comeback just got better and better until it was complete. It was made even better by a drunk and obnoxious Indians fan right next to us in the CF bleachers, who finally left in disgust. I should note that the other five Indians fans with him seemed like good guys — they were embarassed by his behavior.

I also made it to the game in SF where the Cubs won on Jeff Baker’s home run, and that was great, too. There is nothing like seeing the other team’s 100-mph flamethrower victimized by a guy who was waiting for that fastball.

Definitely

Rami walking off against the Cards. I was at my friend Chatter’s house who is the biggest Cardinal fan I know. He has a cardinal wind chime that he tugs on every time the birds get or need a hit. Amongst my friends we’re the two biggest sports fans by far so whenever the Cubs and Cards play it is basically a shouting match between the two of us. Anyway when Rami sent that ball into the bleachers everyone went nuts, I was running around his basement screaming at the top of my lungs. I’ll never forget the look on Chatter’s face. Half disgust half disbelief, all agony. It was absolutely priceless. Oh and then I took his money in a card game, great day.

My vote was for the 4/12 game. My wife and I were there. I thought for SURE Fielder's bomb was LONG GONE!

In preparation for Opening Day on Monday, we were driving to Chicago on I-69 in Michigan Sunday afternoon (Easter) planning to stay that night at a hotel about 1/2 mile from Wrigley .

Then I got to thinking: ‘“You know, tonight’s game was moved from a day game to a night game for ESPN. Milwaukee is only 90 minutes north of Chicago. We have no other plans for the evening. We can probably get tickets. Let’s GO!"

Mrs. Zeke got on her cell phone, called the Brewers ticket office and ordered 2 tickets for pickup at will call. Sweet.

We saw a good game, the season was still full of promise, Sori homered on the first pitch and we got a Webkinz plush bunny for Easter. Plus, it was our first trip to Milwaukee ever.

4/13- OD plus Teddy’s no hitter into the 7th was great too, but the weather was AWFUL. Mrs. Z was ready to leave in the 5th until I said: “Ted hasn’t given up a hit yet.” She said: “OK. We stay.” What a trooper.

Now only 12,859 on the "Cubs Season Tickets Waiting List"...

I got soaked that game

From now on we should just postpone home openers if it’s a nice day. Just wait until a rotten day and get the game in because it seems like (especially the last two openers) the Cubs home openers are just awful weather. Keep the tradition going.

I made it to the Reed Johnson’s catch game and stayed at my uncle’s house that night in Rockford. Then I drove to the home opener on Monday and sat in the bleachers and got soaked. That was cold. Later in April I made it to the Big Z no-hitter statue giveaway game vs Cincinnati and after the gates opened I asked an usher if he heard anything on the game being called or not becaue it had been raining all day. He looked at me and asked: “Were you here for opening day?” With a good laugh and a big smile on my face I said “YES, I was.”

It was also the game that the cat got out on the field, and then there was shades of a Bartman incident just after the cat. Bob Brenly tied it all together and said: “If I see a goat I’m runnin’!”

Jack Brickhouse: "Hey! Hey!"
Harry Caray: "Holy Cow!"
Vince Lloyd: "The Chicago Cubs are on the Air!"

Well, considering that for the first time EVER,

The Cubs lost EVERY game I went to this year (0-4), I’d rather just put this season to bed. I mean really, we got swept out of San Diego… :(

especially after my attendance over the last 6 years (29-2), this was disappointing. …sigh…

Is next year here yet? Is Bradley gone? Do we have Granderson, Roberts, PV, and Jesus McMauer yet?
