Fontenot is now arbitration-eligible; I suspect this makes him a non-tender candidate.

See ya later Fontenot

Just say no to players named Aaron on the Cubs.

Thank you, and good bye

I like the guy, but he just doesn’t bring enough of anything to justify a roster spot. He’s a lefty, but there isn’t overwhelming pop in his bat. He only fields one position at an average level. He isn’t blazing fast.
Quirky that Arizona gets to save so much money on Reynolds.
Certainly in house there will be someone to take MF’s spot. I like that there will be some rollover on the roster for sure. I think Lou and Jim annointed too many players last year. How about a little open competition this Spring, fellas?

The one position limitation that really does him in

He’s got a good enough bat for a utility infielder except he really isn’t a utility infielder. He is passable at 3rd but I wouldn’t try him at SS.

A blessing in disguise

….this forces hendry to move beyond his man crush on short/bad 2nd baseman…..for the moment

What the hell?

Why is everyone assuming he’s gone? Players don’t typically get that huge of a raise in their first arb year, and Fontenot’s 2009 numbers certainly won’t be helping him with regard to his numbers. Let’s calm down for a bit here.

He's gone ...

… more likely because he doesn’t really fit any more, in addition to the arb situation.

He'll be back...

because the Cubs should be smart enough to realize that Jeff Baker is not an everyday 2b. He has huge platoon splits. Fontenot’s not as good as he was in 2008, but he’s a hell of a lot better than he was last year.

If the Cubs pick up another 2b then I could see him gone but the OF is a much bigger hole.

Well...

… if the Cubs can get rid of Aaron Miles, that makes a lot of sense.

Why isn't he gone yet?

Are they hoping some team is going to magically ask for him? There’s a better chance that the Cubs re-sign Andy Pafko to play CF this year

Hey!

Maybe you’re on to something. Pafko could probably hit better than Miles. And he’s 88 years old.

Fontenot fits perfectly

for a team that only has Jeff Baker and Aaron Miles at 2B if you’re looking at this only from a player-talent perspective. He doesn’t fit if you believe 2009 reflected his true talent level or you plan to get a starting 2B FA. How do you see it differently?

Is he traded yet?

get rid of Aaron before Mike

Aaron Miles should NOT be on this team

Fontenot is Super small

haha

Offer a small raise 1 year deal and be done with it.

He’s interesting as part orf a trade.

if this was still new to me, i wouldn't understand

by N Oakley on Nov 12, 2009 9:23 AM CST reply actions

Agreed

He’s got some value. He’s not a complete waste of a roster space. He serves a purpose. Just don’t think it’s on this team anymore. I see him being packaged with Bradley somewhere. Detroit is hopefully that location…

I'll Take

Fontenot ‘08 + Baker ’09 in a platoon. I hate to just write Fontenot off after a year in which he was pressed into full time duty and spent a lot of time out of position at 3B. That said, he does turn 30 this year, doesn’t warrant a full time gig, and maybe not even a strict L/R platoon. But something where he gets around 300 ABs seems ok.

Interesting to note, Bill James projects his 2010 slash line as .273/.343/.415 in 359 ABs. Coupled with his solid to above average defense, that seems pretty useful. If we can somehow extricate ourselves from Big Gulp Aaron Miles, I’d like still like to keep Fontenot.

↑ This. ↑

The guy had an awful year. But, looking at Fangraphs, his contact percentage this year (81.2%) was actually a hair higher than in 2008 (81%), but his 2009 BABIP was a very low .281. Could it be that Fontenot just had a luckless season? I think so.

I’m not going to try and argue that he’s an everyday player anymore. I don’t think he got a particular fair audition for that role, but life’s tough that way. When you factor in his good defense (career UZR numbers at second base are very good), he’s worth another year with a very modest raise.

Sign me up for this position.

I wouldn’t be so quick to rush Fonty out the door either. He can serve some uses with the Cubs still (particularly if we assume that Miles is gone).

by CubsWin!Oregon on Nov 12, 2009 3:26 PM CST up reply actions

How much of a raise does everyone here who thinks he should be NTed think he will get

I don’t think he gets more than an extra 250k or so. That’s not going to break the bank at all, even given the relatively limited payroll constraints the Cubs have.
