Fontenot is a Super-Two

Today, Cubs 2b Mike Fontenot was granted the final Super-two spot after beating out Micah Owings and Adam Jones. The full article can be found here: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20091111&content_id=7655452&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb

This may sway the Cubs to not give him his raise and just either trade him or non-tender him. It would be sad to see the LSU duo broken up, but if it means saving money for perhaps a better player, then well it might be a good move. My question is, why doesn't they allow all three of those players the right to Super-Two eligibility? Did Fontenot receive it by a flip of the coin or by another way?

Oh and it's great to be back on this board regularly again :)

Welcome back.

Like you said, I just posted this on the front page.

Fontenot got his status because he had more service time in 2009 than the others did.

I think you’re right, he’s likely a non-tender or trade possibility.

I'd miss Z pounding him into the ground and then pulling him up again

Keep in mind

Sosa didn’t exactly tear it up after he left the Cubs, ESPECIALLY in Baltimore

Jones’ status is what I was referring to.

Good call

Yea I heard that Jones kid is pretty good. Think we could get him for Miles and Heilman?

Sosa for Hairston, Fontenot, and Kevin Hart (for David Crouthers)

That deal definitley had more value to it than we gave it in the offseason of 2004. Hairston was a modest replacement for Sosa. Mike Fontenot came out of nowhere and essentially was vital to our team in 08. Kevin Hart pitched well in most of the games he played for us, and in return we recieved for him Grabow and Gorzelanny, who may be vital to our team next year.

It’s neat to see those connections; essentially we traded Sammy Sosa for Mike Fontenot, Adam Harben (via Jerry Hairston to Phil Nevin), Tom Gorzelanny, and John Grabow

Kevin Hart was not a substitute for David Crouthers.

Hart was acquired in a separate deal for Freddie Bynum.

I would be fine

… with Mike Fontenot on another team next season.

But then...

How can we possibly fulfill Hendry’s 2B quota? He would only be left with Miles, Baker, and Riot…

Don’t there have to be at least four?

…plus, there’s always Soriano!

sorry

flagged as inappropriate, due to the soriano at second reference.

It's not about money. It's about winning and getting over the hump. We've had the appetizer now, but we left the main course on the table.
