Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

I don't get why Jim Hendry is discussing a Bradley for Burrell swap. Burrell played only 2 games in the outfield last year and only hit .221. What good would he do for us?! The Cubs already said that they wanted to moved Fukudome back to right field.

Better not trade for Burrell

Rumor is hendrys trying to bring in a center fielder and someone on the infield..Pat would be anthor bad move…I would not watch 1 cubs game if he makes that move..it will be anthor lost season why bother…

That seems to be dead for now

If it happens it is a desperation move to get rid of Bradley. The hope is that Hendry could possibly flip Burrell but I don’t see that either.

everything I've seen suggests

we would moving him to another club…

Burrell v. Karros

I posted this the other day.

Compare Burrell’s and Karro’s stats

What jumps out at me in looking at these stats:
1) Burrell’s 2009 season looks like at least something of an outlier.

2) Like Karros, he wouldn’t be expected to be an everyday player. Some offdays and beneficial matchups could make him more valuable. LIke Karros, Burrell has a reputation as a standup clubhouse guy. He is coming off a tough year and would be returning to the more familiar NL. So I don’t see any reason that he couldn’t bounce back to being a useful player.

3) He was on a Rays team that is pretty strong defensively in the OF. His UZR in 2008 was -4.3 as an everyday LFer. Milton Bradley’s UZR last year? It was -4.1. Considering that Burrell would likely be a platoon partner for Kosuke in RF, who could also serve as a late inning defensive replacement, I think we could live with that.

Remember, in the fall of 2002, NOBODY would have been clammoring to bring Karros and/or Grudz to the Cubs. That deal was about getting rid of Hundley, just as this deal is about getting rid of Bradley. For what it is worth, Bill James’ model predict Burrell to rebound somewhat in 2010

This

Is exactly what you do with Burrell. He plays in right against lefties (twice a week max, more during the odd run of lefties), starts for Soriano maybe once a week, and he provides pop off the bench when he doesn’t start. Fukudome or Fuld (or Johnson if retained) can always sub in the late innings.

If the bat rebounds, I can live with this arrangement for one year, though it’s not my first choice.

Totally agree.

The best thing about Burrell is he offers a relatively quick and easy escape from the Milton debacle. If the Cubs used him as a sort of glorified bench player, it may not be the end of the world. Who knows, maybe he has a comeback season. Jim Edmonds did.

I suppose financially he's an escape.

But I’d still rather trade him.

What about this ...

Cubs get Castillo from the Mets
Rays get Milton from the Cubs
Mets get Burrell from the Rays

Without talking about money issues, anybody think this could work? Could the Mets have interest in Burrell?

by elgato on Nov 12, 2009 1:17 PM CST reply actions

Do they need a left fielder?

Their depth chart shows Sullivan and Martinez at that position now. I’m not really familiar with either of those players.

Mets

are looking for a left fielder, though they won’t go after Burrell unless Holliday and Bay don’t come through.

I'd rather have Burrell than Castillo

Burrell is proven to be a power hitter and is what we are/were looking for from a free agent last year. A rebound year is more likely with him. Castillo is old and defensively is a risk. Plus he has 2 years on his contract. I think people are happier with Jeff Baker at 2B than Sam Fuld in CF.

Could the real deal be

Bradley + $ for Burrell and Burrell plus some other players to Texas for Millwood?

With middle infield and CF to be pursued separately.

by ClarkFan on Nov 12, 2009 6:23 PM CST reply actions

That makes some sense. If Texas decides that Bradley part deux

isn’t a good idea, they still need offensive help. Burrell is a guy who is best suited to DH and throughout his career has hit for power and been a patient hitter, both qualities that they need.

That's a very possible scenario.
