ESPN and Starlin Castro

today I was watchign ESPN and on Sportscenter and they were reporting on some hot stove things and the cubs came up to which they said

"the cubs will be looking for a starting pitcher but the real help may come from within. 19 year old Starlin Castro, a shortstop, is tearing up winter ball right now and could be a big leaguer in the summer."

is this just ESPN not knowing what they are talkign about? or is he that good and ready?..i think its the former rather than the latter..

If it was Gammons, he loves throwing around prospect names – gives the perception that he’s in the loop on every franchise and farm system.

If it was something like Stark, Olney, or Neyer, then to me at least, it has more credibility.

I think Castro will be a September call-up, unless injuries and lack of depth at the major league level force the move earlier.

I really hope he’s not just another over-hyped Felix Pie or Corey Patterson.

Above-average defense at a coveted position for the league minimum

He’s a real bum, all right. Fantastic reasoning.

Are you familiar with the old robot saying, "Does not compute"?

by dr stabbingworth on Nov 12, 2009 2:12 PM CST up reply actions

So wouldn't rather have Rollins, Tulo, Escobar, or Bartlett at SS?

Cause…you know…they’re all BELOW average defensively.

As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

by santoswoodenlegs on Nov 12, 2009 3:02 PM CST up reply actions

Tulo's actually well above average defensively.

I don’t know off the top of my head about the other’s, but I’m pretty sure Rollins is about average despite his Gold Gloves.

And I’m pretty sure that the offense of those would make up for any defensive shortcomings. Theriot is not one of the top Shortstops in the league, but he’s not a minus with the glove or bat, though.

Tulo was awful defensively....

compared to Theriot last year. If UZR means anything.

As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

by santoswoodenlegs on Nov 12, 2009 3:55 PM CST up reply actions

it doesn't.

even proponents of UZR admit that you need a three-year sample before the noise goes away. of course at that point, who knows whether defensive talent stays the same over a three-year period.

by cubsforever on Nov 14, 2009 5:36 AM CST up reply actions

Theriot's got a career OPS of .726

That, IMO, is a minus unless he provides great defense. Thankfully, he’s been cheap for us and as a result, he’s been a good thing overall. After he’s no longer cost-controlled, I’m hoping Castro is ready to fill his spot, because I have no interest in watching the Cubs pay Theriot millions for what he provides.

He was over-hyped

through the minors. We were all told, especially by the Cubs, that he was a “can’t miss”. He may turn out to be serviceable player, but that doesn’t change that he was, in fact, over-hyped coming up.

Scott Bora$ is satan.

by Canadian Cubs Fan on Nov 12, 2009 5:30 PM CST up reply actions

But he hasn't missed.

He had a great year and looks like he could be an above-average MLB center fielder. That’s not serviceable, that’s, well, something we could really use right now.

Either way, the thought of a real position player in the CUBS' system

Makes me more excited than all of Carrie Underwood’s outfits last night at the CMA’s.

That's call a time filler

And to goes to the Chicago Cubs, a big fan base for ESPN to attract. I doubt you’d see that kind of chatter for a KC Royal 19 year-old prospect.

Personally

I would rather see Castro spend the whole year in the minors. All that said, there’s been a lot of spec and rumors that he’ll be up by summer, provided he gets off to a good start. It’s part of the reason why I keep saying to not anticipate anything big in the middle infield.

As for Castro, he’s good. A lot of projection to go, but there’s a lot to like. He still can add more weight to around his 180ish frame right now. He does side arm the ball a bit defensively, but he has good range, plus arm strength, and most of his errors were, by most accounts, an issue of consistency, something that can be fixed. He’s thought of as a good student (AzPhil over at TCR offered a good take in a post awhile back) and good worker who wants to maximize his ability. He has plus speed (Badler over at BA said plus-plus speed, which would put him in Hak-ju Lee and Tony Campana territory. That said, if he fills out a bit, some of that speed will be sacrificed).

The projection issues largely come at the plate. He’s very balanced at the plate. I remember when I saw him, even though he was reaching on some pitches, he was never out of control at the plate. There’s work to do with discipline, but this isn’t an issue of Vitterian proportions. He should add some power. The swing’s nice and compact, but he can maintain a good plane with the bat. His wrists are what will allow him to add power, if he adds power. He’s able to explode into a pitch. Good contact ability should be expected.

Now … that’s a high end. A lot could go wrong, but there’s a lot to be excited about.

just realized i didn't really answer the question

if Castro was playing by midseason, my guess is that he could be decent-solid. Sound defensively, minimal offense probably.

I would prefer him to get more time in the minors partly to try and get him to be more disciplined. He’s not a hacker, but he could definitely use work.

Good grief

People need to stop predicting a timetable for Starlin Castro and annointing him things like the next Derek Jeter. For crying out loud he is 19 years old and barely played outside of A ball.

Patience grasshopper. Let’s see what Castro looks like throughtout the 2010 season before getting carried away with major league ETA and potential.

Andrew Cashner is the closest thing the Cub system has to prospect on the cusp of hopefully breaking the big leagues and creating excitement.

I don't think that many Cubs fans are getting carried away

with ETA and potential. This has largely been a train pushed by national media types.

As for Cashner, the idea that he’s on the cusp of creating excitement isn’t flawed, but the idea that he’s the only Cubs prospect close is. Cashner’s still a work in progress as a starter, and I’ve never gotten all that excited about pen arms. Jay Jackson is a more polished arm at the moment, with high level potential, and in particular, better starting potential. Jay likely will start at Iowa, whereas it’s tougher to figure out where Cashner will start. If they intend to play out the starting thing, I’d guess Tennessee.

Heh, it's funny that the only person in this tread so far to make a Jeter compaison....

is you. Do you even bother to read what’s actually in threads anymore? Or do you you read the headline and the first 3 sentences and then do your favorite “jump to a conclusion” dance and then post your usual self righteous declaration?

by santoswoodenlegs on Nov 12, 2009 11:22 PM CST up reply actions

To be fair to Blou, in a prior Castro post

someone stated that Castro was considered by scounts to have “Jeter” as his best case upside with the reality being below that.

if this was still new to me, i wouldn't understand

111 AA at-bats

I’d say ESPN is a little premature in their hype. Hopefully his progression continues on its current path, but even if it does I’d guess there’s a lot more for him to learn before we see him in Wrigley.

by Cubinator on Nov 13, 2009 2:45 PM CST reply actions

The thing that people always forget, it seems to me,

is that when a sports reporting outlet starts hyping a prospect, it’s because they are hearing excited reports from scouts from many different organizations. Starlin Castro is being hyped, not because Hendry has a PR machine working overtime, not because ESPN wants us all to be disappointed later. Starlin Castro is being hyped because he is performing in a way at the AFL that has excited the people whose job it is to look critically at young ballpapers.

Yes he can still flop. Yes, he can fail to fill out his projection. But these scouts still know better than we do.

Is he traded yet?

by DGU on Nov 13, 2009 2:53 PM CST up reply actions

totally in agreement about there being a reason for excitement

But I find such early hype to create a false level of expectations that hamper appreciating a player for what he turns out to be (regardless of whether he fulfills his potential). There seem to be more can’t miss guys that miss than can’t miss guys that hit the target. And that’s not a dig at the people who’s job it is to know better than me. I am excited and happy that the Cubs have Castro (and am that way because of what I read scouts saying). I’m just more conservative than espn is about when its time to get really excited about a player.

by Cubinator on Nov 14, 2009 5:51 AM CST up reply actions

I look at it this way.

If we had a .400 hitter, I’d be really excited.

If that .400 hitter had one bad day and went 0-fer, which still happens to even the best hitters, there would be posts here complaining about the hitter and probably even people talking about how being a .400 hitter is overrated and we should rather want scrappy players who are clutch.

There’s a high degree of failure in every aspect of baseball, including in prospect development. And if you know that, if you know that it’s an oxymoron to say “can’t miss” in baseball, well, then there’s no reason not to be really excited by the potential and talent of Starlin Castro.

Is he traded yet?
