OT Kinda: The Bears - 49'ers Head Long Collision Game Thread and Maybe Some Cubs Yack

Well, it's week number 10. Both teams are truckloads of suckitude trying to see if they can fit in the playoff feature. The Davis-Ogunleye dust up a few moments ago on the field appears to be - if the Four Horsemen of the NFL Channel are to be believed - allegedly a precursor to a "play off atmosphere." Heh.

But who knows what will happen. Anyone want to settle in and watch and chat, let's see where this goes. The NFL Channel is carrying it and I guess I'll sit here and watch it. And maybe between plays we can help the Cubs figure out what they need to do, if Milton and Kevin are going to swap jerseys according to the next tweet, and if the grave of the Yum Yum Donuts building will really help the Cubs.

I just hope Hester and Cutler bring it. And Deion, I fear, is right. Davis will talk the smack but he'll bring his game.

Glad the Bears got that franchise quarterback.

Kyle Orton’s looking better and better.

by Al Yellon on Nov 13, 2009 7:26 AM CST reply actions

The difference

there is Kyle is not being asked to win any games…whereas Jay is being asked to win them all.

While Cutler has been downright pathetic at times, the lack of a running game/offensive line has allowed defenses to drop extra men in coverage which makes it more difficult for Cutler to make plays through the air to his mediocre WRs and TEs.

This is at best an 8-8 team and blame can be passed around to everyone…not just cutler.

True on the running game/ offensive line.

Also the nearly complete lack of defense.

But a “franchise quarterback” would have won that game last night instead of throwing a fifth INT.

Cutler’s not a franchise QB.

by N Oakley on Nov 13, 2009 12:05 PM CST up reply actions

Meh...

How much of it is guaranteed and what is the salary cap hit? That is really what you need to evavualate versus the # of years when it comes to NFL contracts. His contract is 20 mil guaranteed, which includes a 7 million signing bonus. In the end if he sucks, it would not appear to be catastrophic to the budget if they have to cut him in a couple of years.

Out of the 5 INTs, two were really Cutler’s fault. The other 3 can be attributed to bad luck/reciever mistakes. Likewise, I would say the first one in the end was more damaging than the 5th one. If he does not make that INT, they kick a field goal and there is no need for them to try to score a touchdown late, they just kick a field goal to win the game.

Get him an offensive line and a legit Wide Receiver and things will be all right.

I am not sure if the run game is lacking

as much as it is invisible. Turner/Lovie have decided that we should not run more than 10-15 times a game, and that not only eliminates any rhythm that Forte can get, but also is showing how weak our O-Line is at pass blocking. The Bears need to make changes to the O-Line before we can see the true upgrade in QB and see a running game.

Remember how not too long ago, the defense used to stack 8 in the box and tell us to pass if we can, now they are dropping 6 and saying run if you can, and that is not a surprise. Many of Cutlers int’s wuold not have been if we had a WR with more experience (the most experisnce by snap counts is Bennett, the others have less in their lives not NFL alone at WR). If you notice on many of Cutlers int’s the WR has stopped trying to get open, and it is on third and long (IIRC) forcing a pass no matter how smart/dumb/risky it may be at that time.

converting the Bears O is going to be daunting

The Bears have never been known for the air game .. we’ve always seen them feted for the run. And boy does it show.

Maybe Cutler can shake this nasty turn of events off. Maybe some decent offensive coaching will finally show up next wek. Maybe the receivers and TE’s will finally learn how to communicate well and get in synch. Maybe the Bears will finally show that they can run patterns and do all the other nuts and bolts things that make an offensive line look like warriors instead of wimps.

The way it looked this past Thursday is not encouraging.

Do you really think

if Cutler was still with Denver and Orton was still a Bear, the team’s records would be all that different than they are now? Orton is a limited skill game manager of a QB. Cutler is a high risk high reward QB. Give Cutler a decent O-line (like Denver has) and better receivers (like Denver has), Cutler has a monster season.
