It's unbelievable to me...
… that Ed Lynch was on the payroll for NINE YEARS after he was fired as GM.
This has to be one of the first Ricketts moves.

That's what happens...
…when your baseball operations is dominated by the “good ole boy” philosophy.

Yep
Which is all the more mystifying why the Ricketts didn’t simply cut to the chase and dismiss Hendry now.

After some thought...
…I completely understand what Ricketts has in mind, and that includes not bringing in a baseball guy to be over Hendry right now.
He is simply putting the next year completely on Hendry, with no room for anything but the highest level of accountability he mentioned in his press conference.
For 2010, the Cubs will need to have a very successful season, otherwise Hendry is out the door and you see a complete new direction on the baseball side. The question is, how will Ricketts define success in 2010? Given he has already said the club has the talent to win the world series, I’d guess it would be a DEEP playoff run.

I would swap
Bradley for Wood and throw in a little cash. But it woudl be tough knowing we could have kept Wood for less, I am most sure. If you got Wood maybe Marmol could be the trade bait the Tigers are looking for to acquire Granderson (I know we would have to give up more than just Marmol but maybe he is a deal breaker for them).

Yeah, interesting idea.
And the whole concept of trading one of the most reviled Cubs in recent memory for one of the most beloved would be literary gold.

I'm not necessarily agreeing with this sort of deal, but...
…. from an ownership standpoint, there would probably be no better way for Tom Ricketts to become very popular among Cubs fans.
Just sayin’.

So I have had time to think and expand the idea
We give the Tribe 2 mil in 10 & 11. The Tigers want and need a closer as they will not be able to afford Rodney, they also need salary relief but I have decide we don’t need one of their bad contracts. The Tigers also need a 2nd baseman, they can’t afford Polanco. We offer the Tigers Marmol, Stevens, Aaron Miles & whoever besides our top 3 or 4 prospects for Granderson. We offer to pay 1.5 mil of Miles contract. The Tigers get a cheap closer, a 2nd basemand and some financial relief. If it takes throwing in Marshall or Theriot, do that also.

But the Indians don't need an OF/DH - they need pitching
They already have star outfielders in Sizemore and Choo. Exciting young up-and-comers like LaPorta, Brantley and Crowe. And a well-established DH in Hafner. Sorry, but no room at the inn…
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
I take offense to the statement
Hafner is a well established DH. Just kidding. If some teams are hurting as financially as it is being reported, room can be made in the inn.

Then get a 3 way
with Texas & Cleveland with Bradley to Texas, Milwood to Cleveland & Wood to the Cubs, with the appropriate cash to get it done.

The Lynch move is clearly a push from Ricketts
Like others, I wonder how someone keeps their job (paycheck), for so long after getting fired. Baffling.
Time to let it go and move on
I have nothing but the utmost respect and admiration for Kerry Wood, but the fact is he’s not getting any younger or less injury prone. Sure, having him back on the Cubs would be a warm, fuzzy feel good kind of move, but that doesn’t win championships. At this point, he’s not a surefire answer to any of the Cubs’ problems, so let’s all just wish him well and concentrate on what the team really needs.
P.S. The same goes for that fella who played for Cleveland and St. Louis last year as well.

Counterpoint.
Wood was healthy the entire 2009 season. So how can you say he’s “more” injury prone?

No love affair with Wood
We have to get rid of Bradley and Wood has a contract that is close. If Wood is remotely productive for us and he helps stay on Geo’s butt again and Geo produces like his rookie season would it be worth bringing him back? I say YES!

Where has it been proven that Wood was on Geo when they were teammates?
If there’s one guy I would say influenced Geo, it’s Henry Blanco

I didn't say he was "more" injury prone
I said he’s not any less injury prone—there’s a difference. Given his history, do you really want to take a chance on him? It’s not like he was lights out for Cleveland last year, and he’s not going to get significantly better at his age. I say good luck and thanks for the memories.

As noted below...
… he didn’t get a lot of save opps for a bad Cleveland team.
Other than the blister in 2008, he has now been 100% elbow & shoulder healthy for two full seasons.
You’re only taking on one year’s worth of contract, and doing so to get rid of another. If this deal would help us get Curtis Granderson (by trading Marmol and others to Detroit), I think it’s a win-win.

I would contribute financially to making this happen.
Al just invite me to 2 games more than I am planning to already attend next year and I will drink 8-10 beers and eat 2-3 hot dogs. Driving revenue one beer at a time.

Wood
Didn’t seem to get too many save opportunities for a really poor Cleveland team. I suspect that in Chicago, he would get more opportunity to be consistent.
Of course the risk is that he throws his arm over the backstop, but seriously, this is the risk with every power pitcher. I would do a salary swap with Cleveland in a heartbeat. I would even pay the difference.
Just the morale boost in the clubhouse would have to be incredible. And I agree with Al that this would make the new owner out to be a Chicago hero.

baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out
Kerry Wood should have zero appeal to the Cubs at this stage
Put emotion aside and look at reality. Bottom line Kerry Wood is an overpaid overrated pitcher with a bad arm that could blow up at any given moment…again.
Sentimentality doesn’t win baseball games and championships. Good objective baseball decision-making does.

Agree about sentimentality
And he had a horrendous year. However, his comfort level may be higher in Chicago. I worry about his durability. His arm, back, hot tubs, hang nails…he’s a bit of a bandaid.

When is...
the last time that Hendry made a good objective baseball decision BLou?
