Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

This, I think, would be and absolute steal for the White Sox. They unload Konerko and get back one of the top firstbasemen in baseball. Moving from Petco to Comiskey should add a few HR's on his total straight away. The article also mentions that the White Sox may be including Tyler Flowers, Jordan Danks, and Daniel Hudson in the package to the Padres. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that any of these players are "Top Tier" talent. I can't believe that some other team couldn't put together a better package than what the White Sox can offer.

In any event, I'd like to hear how this wouldn't be a major coup for the White Sox.

Ay caramba. This makes me muy sick to my panza.

I hope this doesn’t come to fruition. I want to keep liking AG.

I don't see how this happens without Beckham being a part of it

It seems like a fantasy trade that involves at least one waived NTC and the Padres taking on 3 more Sox prospects after getting 4 earlier this season. Also why would the Angels want Konerko?

The Padres can do much better than this if they are going to move Gonzalez.

Just say no to players named Aaron on the Cubs.

Agreed.

Sounds like a fantasy league deal to me. Unlikely to happen; plus the Sox would never be able to afford Gonzalez’s deal unless they were able to dump Alex Rios.

I don't think he's very expensive

Yet. Though he is due for new paper in two years I think. Then he will be expensive.

to make a run in 2010 and 2011

Oakland and St. Louis do this all the time. They trade for guys a year or two away from free agency, knowing that they might not be able to keep him. But they can go on a run for that one year …

by elgato on Nov 17, 2009 10:59 AM CST up reply actions

Um...

Oakland is also a perennial top 10 minor league system and St. Louis is the garbage picker team. The Sox don’t really have the room to pick up Gonzo and just let him walk.

Why?

They would be unloading Konerko and have other contracts coming off of the books in the next couple of years, those being Beuhrle’s, AJ’s, Jenks, Linebrink. They can afford to resign him, though it will force more reliance on a farm system that would lose it crown gem in this deal.

Jenks is going to be moved

My bet is Tampa Bay. The White Sox got a lot of quality production for a very favorable price out of Jenks the past 4 1/2 years. But the wise move is to part company is you are the Sox. Jenks is too big a risk to give a lucrative multi-year contract to. In fact very few closers are ever worth the risk unless there name happens to be Mariano Rivera.

Needless to say, I wholly adhere to the philosophy that “closers are made, not born.” Matt Thornton, your table is ready.

IF they made the trade...
  • Sox trade Konerko @ 12 million 2010
  • Sox acquire Gonzalez @ 4.75 million 2010

The Sox would be shedding 7.25 million in salary for 2010. How does that square with, “…the Sox would never be able to afford Gonzalez’s deal unless they were able to dump Alex Rios.”

Don't buy it

Mark Gonzalez article is sort of poking holes at the SoxNet thing. I don’t know if SoxNet is legit or not, but

a) Angels and Konerko? I guess they could use him or Kendry Morales as guys splitting time at 1st/DH, but I really don’t see them going out to spend prospects on an old option like that.

b) White Sox system is relatively weak right now. I like Hudson, I like Flowers, I like Mitchell. Lukewarm on Vicideo, Morel, Danks. Hudson, though, is an average stuff starter that gets by with pitchability. There’s a question of how good he is against tougher players. Flowers might not stick behind the plate. Mitchell can’t be traded until midseason. Viciedo isn’t certain to stick at 3rd (although perhaps) and his bat is a work in progress. Morel might not have enough power. Danks is an aggressive swing first leadoff bat. None of those are top level prospects. Could they be pieces to a deal? Perhaps, but there’s not enough pitching there, unless they fork over a Gavin Floyd or a John Danks in a trade, neither of which seems likely.

If they pull this off, then Hoyer’s bumbled his way out of the gate and Kenny’s stole Adrian. I just don’t see it – and if this is all it costs, I’d definitely want the Cubs to investigate this even if it means major restructuring.

by toonsterwu on Nov 17, 2009 12:00 PM CST reply actions

I think

that the Padres will seriously listen to Adrian packages this offseason, though. Hoyer’s not tied to the past, and even though he’ll get backlash from the fans if he does move Adrian, I’m not sure he’ll care that much.

That said, I think Hoyer is going to want pitching, pitching, and more pitching. If they move Adrian, Kyle Blanks can go to first, and they have some OF talent in the minors, enough to stopgap. Everth Cabrera looks like a potentially solid shortstop, and they have MI options in the system that could fill in at 2nd (Sogard/Zawadski). I think, if they move Kouzmanoff, that they’d simply move Headley to 3rd and give him a shot. Hundley isn’t great, but he’s a decent enough young catcher, and Canham is a decent enough catching prospect.

Short of it is, I think they are going to want arms, and in particular, starting caliber arms, and considering he doesn’t have to move Adrian, I’m not real sold that they will move him unless they get a very, very good package.

The thing the Sox have in their distinct favor is a rotation of Peavy, Buerhle, Danks and Floyd

That is as impressive a quartet as you will find in baseball. And a quartet with further upside once you get past Buerhle.

I see Adrian Gonzalez getting moved

Boston is the best guess. But whatever team it is that lands him will have given up a king’s ransom in young talent. Gonzalez is an outstanding player.

White Sox? I don’t see how Jordon Danks, Danny Hudson and Tyler Flowers would be enticing enough if you are San Diego.

Well considering they wanted Buccholz and more...

Beckham isn’t even the equivalent of Buchholz.

I could make a thread that says Colvin, Lee, and Fox for Granderson. Think that will get published on the Detroit site?

The White Sox have more financial manueverability than people think

In letting Thome, Dye, Contreras and Dotel go the Sox save a whopping $35 million plus a season. Peavy and Rios eat up a good share of that, but not nearly the whole amount. Plus Jenks is on the way out the door too.

Sox are poised to have an interesting off-season. And I do believe Kenny Williams when he says they like Jordan Danks to such a degree that they believe he can compete for a starting outfielder job in spring training.

Jordan Danks will end up like Pie

The kid K’s way too much, more than once per game, and that at the A+ and AA levels. Defensively, yes he’s ready, but rushing him could create another Brian Anderson.

Taking that money off the books doesn’t necessarily mean they will use it considering their struggling attendance numbers.

Those prospects won't get it done

I’m sure San Diego is listening to all offers but they will want something more certain than those guys. None of them can be considered top prospects.

I'm guessin' a deal gets down with Boston

The Red Sox need to inject some life into that lineup. They can move Kevin Youklis back to 3rd base. Plus they have the high quality prospect ammuniton to get a deal done.

Sox do have Lowell for one more year

but they did miss out on Texiera last off season so they would be a possibility. Buchholz would be a good starting point if Boston would consider movng him.

by rlpete on Nov 17, 2009 9:03 PM CST up reply actions

Mike Lowell can't be counted upon for anything at this stage

Sox are just biding time until the final year of his contract unwinds in 2010. They have the big payroll to absorb a guy like Lowell rotting away on the bench or the DL. Keep in mind also that Lowell is very well respected and adds an Eric Karros-like dimension to the Red Sox even if he isn’t playing.

Red Sox

will make a move for a 1B or a 3B, that is not a secret. The only question is who and when

baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out
