Let's Help Get Jack Brickhouse's Statue repaired and back on Display
Right now, the statue of Jack Brickhouse that was on display on Michigan Avenue (lets not get into why it was on Michigan Ave and not in it's proper place at Wrigley as opposed to the person whos statue is at Wrigley) has been taken down and is in need of major repairs. Pat Brickhouse, along with the Chicago Baseball Museum are trying to raise funds to repair the statue. Lets back Jack and get this statue of a real Chicago Broadcasting icon back on display. To donate, go to the Chicago Baseball Museums website at the website linked above.

While I agree that this statue should be repaired and placed in Wrigley
I think calling Harry a clown is a silly comment.
Honoring announcers before players is absurd for a sports team
It speaks volumes to the priorities of Trib Co that a statue of an announcer who spent half of his career with St Louis and a significant portion with the White Sox got a statue before Banks, Williams, et al.
For years, it was Pittsburgh has Clemente, St Louis has Musial, Milwaukee has Yount . . . and the Cubs have Caray.

Yep
A very sad indictment on priorities for this organization. And people scratch their heads and wonder why the Cubs haven’t been back to a World Series since 1945.

Because they put up statues to broadcasters?
Yeah, that’s the reason.Uh-huh.

Right - that is taking it a bit far
Still, it was silly.

in defense of the Harry statue and its timing
he died while still active and part of the team. that does not explain why Banks didnt have one, but explains why Harry got one quickly.
baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out
I never liked Harry
I didn’t like him when he was with the White Sox and I really didn’t like him when he was with the Cubs. When he became more interested in what Marla Collins was wearing as opposed to paying attention to what was going on on the field, it was time for him to go. And after the stroke, half the time he really didn’t make any sense in the booth. To honor him at Wrigley before a real Chicago Icon, who besides sports, also did hard news like covering Presidential Conventions, interviewing Presidents (and not about sports) is a real joke in my opinion.

ok
even though my feelings on that man have not changed, I will change the wording in my original post to get this post back on track – to get Jacks Statue repaired – and away from my feelings on the other guy.

in case you forgot
many of those games were so bad, that it was more entertaining than the game itself.

Thanks for posting.
I work very close to where that statue stood and was wondering why it disappeared. And, as a sidenote, it would be pretty cool if a Chicago Baseball Museum opened up somewhere. I see they’re looking for a location.

They have a location.
400 N. State St. They don’t have the funding as of now.

Jack Brickhouse -- swell guy, but an absolutely brutal play-by-play guy
I’m sorry, but I have a very hard time considering Jack S*ithouse an icon of anything. Fact is most Cub fans could barely tolerate his play call, and the rest found him about as dynamic and lively as a pizza box.
The ONLY reason Brickhouse has a statue at Wrigley is because Harry got one and it would have seemed sorta unfair given that Brickhouse was in the booth for 9,000 years.
Vince Lloyd was the REAL voice of the Cub broadcast for so many years. Lloyd and Lou Boudreau on the radio is what most good ol’ Cub fans remember most positively about the broadcast of games.

Brickhouse was OK.
Far better in his earlier years than in the cliche-ridden years of the 1970’s.
You’re right about Vince & Lou — forced out years before they should have been.

Brickhouse was tolerated, not loved by Cub fans
Under conditions where Harry doesn’t get a statue the most farcical idea on the planet would be to construct monument to Jack.
Vince Lloyd was understated in delivery and very, very good at his craft. I miss his call a great deal.

I respectfully disagree with your stand on the Bricker...
All I can do is speak from my experiences growing up listening to Jack and his myriad of partners, All the Cub fans I personally know and grew up with really enjoyed listening to Jack do the games. In my mind, I would still prefer him over many of todays broadcasters.
But I do have to agree that Vince & Lou were excellent also and Vince SHOULD be in the broadcasters wing of the Hall of Fame (something I have promoted on my site when the voting time comes), but with the process that the hall uses today, with the people who heard Vince broadcast getting older and older and the people who do the initial internet vote for the Frick award get further away from when Vince broadcast, it seems that Vince will never get the votes to win.
