Zack Greinke Named BBWAA's AL Cy Young Award Winner

Greinke got only 25 first-place votes (of 28) -- why this wasn't unanimous is a little bit puzzling. Felix Hernandez got two of the others, and Justin Verlander the other one.

In a bit of strange scheduling, the NL Cy Young winner will be announced on Thursday; tomorrow, they'll reveal the Manager of the Year balloting.

King Felix went 19-5, with a 2.49 ERA

I don’t know why its puzzling why he got a couple of votes

I guess I'm just a worrier, that's why my friends call me whiskers

Because Greinke was better.

The W-L record should not have mesmerized the voters, but that’s what usually happens with this vote.

Yeah, but 90% of the voters read past W-L

A much better performance than I would expect.

No 20s

If someone had won 20 there might have been trouble, but to me Greinke deserved it:

Kansas City, which tied for last place in the AL Central at 65-97, scored just 13 runs in his eight losses and 21 runs in his nine no-decisions. He failed to get a victory in six starts in which he allowed one run or none.

Greinke’s FIP is much lower. Greinke’s Adjusted ERA+ was 205 to Felix’s 174. Also, Kauffman is a hitter’s park (#5) and Safeco is a pitcher’s park (#21). Plus, KC’s infield defense sucks, and Felix had Franklin Gutierrez behind him. (Seattle was #1 on UZR according to FanGraphs. KC is last.) Felix is awesome, but no match for Greinke this year. (Looking closer, I’m not even sure Felix was better than Halladay. Lincecum, on the other hand…)

YES!!

Greinke was by far and away the best pitcher in baseball this year.

Eh, Lincecum is a close second IMO.

Greinke was on the 4th worst team in baseball.

The Giants contended for the wild card. It’s not even close in my opinion.

How long till the Red Sox or Yankees call him up from 4A ball?

That’s not true!!! WHY THE F*CK WOULD YOU SAY THAT YOU AHOLE!! Ok maybe your right but you gotta give a little something here for it to work. I don’t know what I’m going to do this is the worst thing I’ve ever read, this day could not get any worse. Fine, F*ck it, you’re right.

Greinke might not bite

Hates limelight, attention. He may be the exception that decides that $8M-$10M/year is enough if it lets him stay out of situations where he is not comfortable.

by ClarkFan on Nov 18, 2009 11:12 AM CST up reply actions

Could you imagine his record on a team with hitting? 25 wind out of the question? Or build a rotation out of him duke holliday king lillý and 09 wells???

I saw you in that coffee shop, breaking the fifth commandment. Congress passes these things for a reason, Lois.

Greinke had a phenomenal season.

The powder blue jersey would be more attractive if it was worn with the powder blue pants it was meant to be worn with!

This is a serious fashion faux pas!

Hey, it's a new century!

Zack carried my fantasy team to victory this year. Happy to see him win. Also happy that Royals fans have something to chear about!

Sleeper Pick!

Timmy, Josh Johnson and Grienke. I think I had a good top 3.

My pitching was great

I grabbed Greinke, Josh Johnson and Chris Carpenter all after the 10th round. I think I got Carp in round 18.

by Bradsbeard on Nov 17, 2009 4:15 PM CST up reply actions

I had Brett Anderson in the last round too.

I jumped on Wells as well. My OF was kind of a revolving door until McCutcheon was called up and Coghaln qualified.

Geez...

Cub Style obviously does. It’s a lot more relevant than much of the stuff written on here. Ease up on him.

Sorry.

I don’t have a very high toleration for fantasy team discussions.

Congrats to Zach Greinke - THE SABERMAGICIAN!

Seriously, check out this New York Times article on Greinke and his use of FIP and – gasp – UZR to pitch better. Brian Bannister nods knowingly in the background.
