OT: Big Ten Football Thread, Nov. 21

This weekend will be the final week of the conference games for the Big Ten College Football teams.  And I know how many Big Ten fans we have here on BCB.

This post is for anyone who just likes one of the Big Ten teams to come and talk/chat about the games on November 21.

The games this weekend are:

Minnesota at Iowa, 12 PM EST/11 AM CDT, ESPN
Ohio State at Michigan, 12 PM EST/11 AM CDT, ABC
Wisconsin at Northwestern, 3:30 PM EST/2:30 PM CDT, Big Ten Network
Penn State at Michigan State, 3:30 PM EST/2:30 PM CDT, ABC
Purdue at Indiana, 3:30 PM EST/2:30 PM CDT, Big Ten Network

Illinois is off this week.  They play at Cincinnati on November 27.

On December 5, the last two Big Ten football games will be played.  Illinois hosts Fresno State, and Wisconsin visits Hawaii.

Probably before most of you youngsters' time but...

every time I open this thread up and the above badger photo slowly appears (i.e. it takes a long time to load), I am reminded of the end of that old “People start pollution. People can stop it.” PSA where the Native American is standing there after somebody just threw a bunch of trash at his feet. Then he turns and faces the camera and a tear starts to roll down his cheek.

I keep expecting to see a tear running down Bucky’s face here…

I skipped a cousin's wedding to go to this game.

Best freakin’ night of my life, sports-wise. When they announced the Cubs had won and a cheer went up through the crowd I just knew the Badgers were going to pull it out.

The Big 10 can't compete anymore with conferences like the SEC and PAC-10.

Randy Wells. A product of the Roy Halladay School of Pitching, located in Toronto, Canada. Possible relocation.

by Cub Style on Nov 20, 2009 6:17 AM CST reply actions

Seriously?

You want to go there?

College football is cyclical — some years (like now, perhaps, although we’ll see when the SEC actually plays somebody in bowl season — Florida should be ashamed of its non-conference schedule) the SEC is tops. Some years its the Big 12, some years its the Big 10, some years its the Pac 10.

But the “can’t compete anymore” argument is completely unsupported by anything remotely resembling facts…..the Big Ten will rise again (and probably soon, given the youth on the rosters at OSU, Iowa, MSU, Michigan, Northwestern, etc.), and the SEC will hit a rough patch again….these things happen, which is why the whole “conference superiority” argument is a complete and utter joke.

Michigan is terrible

I was worried last week that Forcier would exploit a weak Wisconsin secondary. He did a little bit, but the team overall is just bad. There is very little that Michigan does well.

by dmlichte on Nov 20, 2009 1:25 PM CST up reply actions

Their running game has promise

By the end of next year, Michigan will be bowl eligible. If they don’t give up on RichRod, they’ll win against OSU in 2 years

Their running game (Minor) and defense (Edwards) are already

using his senior year of eligibility. That and another year of experience from mediocre defensive talent doesn’t give them depth or make them good, just a little better. A little better may not get gashed by Eastern Michigan, but decent conference foes will still roll.

In two years the big richard will still prototype lineman for his system, but lineman too small for the Big 10.

I like the spread, provided a jumbo package is still possible at the goal line (see Illinois game) and a dynamic take away defense, provided it can stop the run (see every game).

Regardless of how you think the Big 10 compares to the SEC, it’s still big time football that deserves real x & o coaching. UM has a system recruiter and more time with him might bring success, but also risks a decade of current ND style garbage.

Firsthand experience with Bo which I won't detail here.

With Woody, he was so upset at MSU’s 1974 football upset of OSU, he personally blew the whistle on MSU ‘s to the NCAA alleging rules violations. He couldn’t win the game so he looked for another way to “get even” for losing to us.

This has been documented by several sources over the years, so it’s not something I’m imagining.

I’m not excusing anything MSU may or may not have done wrong in terms of following NCAA rules back then. If we broke them, and it appears we did, then we deserved what we got. But Woody took it upon himself to be the enforcer. He came off as self-righteous and petty.

But, he’s gone now, and so is Bo so may they rest in peace.

while waiting for the 2nd round of games, what do you think about Big 10 expansion?

Should they try to get that 12th team and split into two divisions, thus giving rise to a conference championship game and, yes, lots of money?

I’ve always felt kind of bad for Penn St. being so far away from all the other teams, so my personal choice for the 12th team would be Pitt. But I’d also love it if ND got down off their high horse and joined a conference – time to put up or shut up. Any others? Cincy perhaps? Maybe they pick off somebody from the Big 12? (Iowa St?) Or is it time for somebody in the MAC to step it up a bit – they currently have 13 teams?

And how would you split them up? In the B10East, seems like Mich, MSU, OSU and PSU would stay together – both from a geographical as well as rival perspective. Obviously Pitt would fit in nicely and probably ND or Cincy as well, but who would the 6th team be?

Likewise, Minn, Iowa, Wisc, NU and Illinois seem like a logical grouping. But again, who would the 6th team be?

What I don’t know is how big of a rivalry is Indiana vs Purdue? Is it huge, i.e. they have to be in same division, or could they be split up?

Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."

by ballhawk on Nov 21, 2009 2:30 PM CST reply actions

I think ND might be the team that would join, if someone did.

ND already has historical rivalries with Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State and Purdue.

But I know that Indiana-Purdue is a big rivalry too.

Not sure how they would split the Big Ten up, even if they decided to do it.

Perfect - 3 dvisions of 4 teams each!

B10 East – OSU, Mich, MSU, PSU
B10 Central – Ind, Pur, Ill, ND
B10 West – Minn, Iowa, Wisc, NU

3 division champs plus a wild card meet in conference semi-finals; winners meet for the Big 10 Championship

Finally – Illinois can hope again! ;-)

That might result in some teams playing each other twice during the year, however.

Not sure how the Big Ten would work that out while retaining the historical rivalries (Illinois-Northwestern, Michigan and Michigan State-ND, etc.).

Only in a championship game.

You’d probably play each team in your own division once (three games), then rotate three and two games vs. the other two divisions each year to get the (usual) complement of eight conference games.

"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra

by Al Yellon on Nov 22, 2009 12:19 PM CST up reply actions

eh...

… the three division thing doesn’t make sense. If you want to have a big ten championship, thats fine, but a 4 team playoff for the division doesn’t make sense. Next year the Big Ten is playing conference games Thanksgiving weekend. Some teams may have a non-conference game as late as the first week of December (Wisc plays Hawaii, Illinois plays Fresno State this year on Dec 5th). Having said playoff would mean having games through mid December, into the finals of every Big Ten school and past the finals of schools on the quarter system. Lets not forget that these are still student athletes and most of them are not NFL bound.

Further, the above set-up puts the three historically dominant teams in the same division. There is no way OSU and Michigan ever agree to a set-up that would preclude the two of them from fighting for the same divisional spot in the conference, wild card or not.

by dmlichte on Nov 22, 2009 2:22 PM CST up reply actions

Hmm.... I guess in addition to the sarcasm font, we need a selig font as well.

My three-division wildcard re-alignment was meant as a joke as well as a subtle dig at Bud Lite. Too subtle I guess.

I’d just be happy to get a 12th team in there and set up two divisions. Either keep the rivalries or split them up – doesn’t matter to me.

For personal reasons I would not want

Iowa State in the Big 10. Leave them where they are. I do not want ND so leave them out too. Just leave it the way it is with 11 teams.

That idea has some merit, too.

And I don’t think the University of Chicago will rejoin the Big Ten anytime soon.

Especially since it’s been 70 years since Chicago left the Big Ten football conference to focus on academics.

by N Oakley on Nov 24, 2009 1:52 PM CST up reply actions

This is an interesting question ballhawk.

We’ve talked about this on campus over the last 30 years or so. ND makes sense, but they always came off as having an attitude of “too good to join the BT.” Would they ever give up their great NBC contract to join the “unwashed masses” of the rest of us poor Big Ten slobs? (And I say this with all affection for ND; my family had members attend St. Mary’s, and they were/are HUGE Notre Dame fans).

I don’’t see them doing it. So what other team might fit?

Pitt has been talked about as has Syracuse and Rutgers. But I don’t see any of them de-affiliating from their current conferences to migrate to the BT. So if ND is not in the mix, I really don’t know who else might fit. I will say this: Central Michigan could hold their own in football.

As for the divisional idea, I always played a two division scenario in my mind. I didn’t think about three. So that is intriguing. But MSU in the same division as OSU, PSU and u-m? Ugh. Can we have at least one “gimme” team in there other than us? OH WAIT! u-m is there! Never mind. I’m fine with having our little sisters in the same division.

BCB bonus points for anyone who gets the “little sister” reference.

Sure they beat Iowa and Wisconsin

but the Syracuse loss hurt them pretty bad. With how bad Eastern Michigan ended up this year, it’s hard to ignore how close that game shouldn’t have been. Great season though nonetheless.

Not a surprise

Aside from losing in Evanston again, the Badger secondary has been poor all year and yesterday a team really picked them apart in every facet. I’ve seen Fenelus, Smith, Henry et al play horribly all season and Kafka exploited them to the fullest yesterday. What I did not expect was such a bad game from Isaac Anderson, who dropped a perfect pass to start the game then made no effort to go up for the ball that ended being the int to end the game. Also some real questionable play calling from Chryst, especially the 4th and 2… put it in the hands of Clay!

Tolzien actually had a pretty nice game and I am excited about his prospects, but if the secondary can’t improve for 2010, it won’t matter.

Oh what might have been.....

1. Played Oregon tough on the road before losing in the final moments
2. Choked against NW after having a 21-3 lead at home
3. Looked horrible against N.Illinois and lost at home
4. Went back and forth before finally losing to MSU because of bad special teams play
5. Choked late against Notre Dame

But, hey…
1. Only team to beat OSU in conference
2. First win at Michigan in 40 years (I don’t care how bad they are, it’s significant)
3. A 4-4 record in BT play after being picked by many to finish in 11th place
4. And this comes back to West Lafayette:

So there’s cause for optimism next year…

Big 10 expansion

My two cents worth: ND will never join. They have too much wrapped up in their football contract with NBC. But, they try and compete in the Big East for hoops, where they will always struggle. Having it both ways seems to be working out for them. Plus, ND does not fit the academic profile of Big Ten schools, with the exception of Northwestern. Where NU has them in the number and quality of graduate schools. NU may be small, but they pack a might academic punch. It is well known the league presidents would only take a school that has a large academic footprint.
I’d look for expansion into the East coast for the Big Ten. Pitt is logical, but it doesn’t have the media market desired. Rutgers does. And, it is a large school, with a good history of research. With PU and Rutgers the Big Ten would extend all the way from Philly to NYC.
A few other possibilities exist in the Midwest. There are grumblings that Mizzou, ISU, or Nebraska are all growing discontented with the Oklahoma/Texas centric Big 12. Of those schools only Mizzou would bring in good media exposure through St. Louis and KC markets. Plus Mizzou already has a rivalry with Illinois. They had some good hoops tilts with Iowa in the 80’s and 90’s. They would fit nicely.
