Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Is there anyway we trade some of our high-priced players?

We all think Milton Bradley will be moved this offseason, but is there anyone else that has a chance to be moved with him? Let's take a look at some of the options.

Star-divide

First off -- common sense says that NO ONE and I mean NO ONE would be remotely intrested in taking on Alfonso Soriano's contract. So our 2010 left fielder will be Alfonso Soriano.

But what about the other expensive contracts we have? Carlos Zambrano? Ted Lilly? Kosuke Fukudome?

Let's start with Zambrano. Carlos is owed almost 19 million next year. In your opinion, is he worth it? We would have to say no to this point but he could very well be worth it sometime during the duration of his contract. What teams would be interested in his contract? The Yankees? The Red Sox? Carlos is someone that teams maybe interested in but you don't know if his contract maybe too rich for maybe even the Yankees.

Ted Lilly is someone we all don't want to trade for fair value. He is a good pitcher and is an excellent #3 pitcher, but IMO I think his value will never be higher. You could trade him to a team such as the Braves, Mets, Angels, Yankees or the Red Sox. He is owed 13 million in '10.

Kosuke Fukudome would be hard to trade, he is owed 28,500,000 over the next 2 years. I don't think any team in this current state of economy would be interested in him without the Cubs paying majority of his salary.

If it meant trading one of these players to free up salary to get other pieces would you do it?

i dont think you trade those guys

with the idea of improving immediately

I think the best case scenario is to just let the contracts unwind and try not to tie ourselves up further with other immense salary commitments

This way we can continue to feign the idea of being a world series contender to appease the masses while trying to prepare for the next opportunity at truly improving ourselves and leveraging our financial prowess (which likely won’t take place until after 2011

Rec'd

Soriano is the only contract I’m “worried” about. Otherwise, Lee, Ramirez, Z, Dempster, Fukudome are all players I can live with or want to see out there

Trade Lilly? No, never. And the dude just had surgery, his value is really low right now

Lilly can not be traded

He is injured and even if another team were willing to take the risk you can not trade an injured player. Z & Dome
would only be traded to clear salary as neither would bring you any value, you would have to eat significant salary on both. Also all three have no trade contracts but lets not let that bother us.

What do you mean you can't trade an injured player?

Sure you can.

I don’t think the Cubs have any desire to trade Lilly, but they could if they wanted to.

by kanderber on Nov 21, 2009 6:45 PM CST up reply actions

Lilly has a limited NTC, I believe,

and may not want to be traded mid-rehab.

Is he traded yet?

by DGU on Nov 21, 2009 6:46 PM CST up reply actions

You can not trade a player on the DL

Though in this case since the season has not started he is not on the DL. Sort of a moot point as no one is going to
want to trade for an injured player.

Oh some teams might want to, provided they got the injured player discount

Obviously the kind of injury, the players’ track record, the new team’s willingness to take risks, etc. all would factor in the decision, but I could see a team rolling the dice on Lilly.

That is, of course, if Ted permits them to…

You can trade a player on the DL, but it must be approved by the Commissioner’s Office.

The only actual occurrence I can remember is of a player who was due to come off the DL on Aug. 3, but had to be traded by Jul. 31.

On the other hand, a GM who would take on a $10M contract for an injured player might not be employed very long.

I was just going to say this.

Also Lilly likes being a Cub, he’s not going anywhere. I can see him getting a two year extension if he comes back strong. Extending players before they are free agents is Hendry’s mantra.

was peavy not on the DL

when he was traded to the white sox?

by nathew on Nov 21, 2009 9:54 PM CST up reply actions

think so

baker was still on the DL when he was traded i think

1 Aaron down, 1 to go

by jesus christos on Nov 21, 2009 10:26 PM CST up reply actions

OK, but you can't trade him

and get anything like his value as a player. Until Lilly shows his shoulder is OK, the Cubs would be looking at getting a bag of used practice balls and a couple of cracked fungo bats.

by ClarkFan on Nov 21, 2009 8:13 PM CST up reply actions

Who are you going to trade?

Z has a NTC, and the odds of finding a team that will (a) pay his salary, (b) give up enough to make a trade worthwhile, and © represents an acceptable destination for Z, are not high.

Demp is a 5/10 player, and thus has an NTC. See above.

Lilly has partial no-trade protection (don’t know exactly what) and is slated to start the season on the DL. He won’t have trade value until June, in which case the Cubs probably can’t afford to trade him.

Sori has an NTC, an albatross contract, and is coming off a horrible year. See above.

Dome has an NTC to go along with with dreaded CF bat / RF glove combination. See above.

Ramy has an NTC (which also includes a $1M “trade bonus”, interestingly enough). While he has good trade value, his opt-out clause diminishes the potential return.

DLee has an NTC, and he reportedly invoked it after the 2008 season.

Spellcheck has an NTC, and he apparently invoked it in the midst of the Peavy saga. Besides, who would want anyone who would choose Des Moines over San Diego?

Grabow has a NTC until 15 Jun 2010, assuming he signed a ML FA contract.

Riot, LBR, and Koyie don’t have much trade value now that they are arb-eligible.

Geo still has some value, though you would be selling low.

Baker has some value, though only as a utility player until he proves otherwise. (See DeRo, circa 2006.)

Guzman has some value, though his injury history negates a lot of it.

Miles has no trade value because he is bad at baseball and has an albatross contract.

Your main ML trade chips are Wells and Marshall, both of whom may be needed at the back end of the rotation, and Mármol. Which one of those are you willing to give up for someone like Granderson? Or would you rather give up Castro, the one hope I have of seeing a genuine Cubs SS in the next few years?

I'd add Fox to the mix of guys with value

But, otherwise, I’d agree with your assessment. It’s another reason why Granderson is a perfect fit for the Cubs. He’s a good player — which we have enough to trade for — but not a great player.

by elgato on Nov 21, 2009 6:52 PM CST up reply actions

Thanks. I forgot about Fox.

He could have value for the Tigers, who might finally be ready to give up on Marcus Thames as a DH.

I've changed my stance on Fox.

Originally I thought we should dump him this offseason to get max value. I’m now thinking that we only dump him if it gets us an allstar player. If not, we need to keep him as a supersub/bat off the bench.

The Cubs, with the contracts we have, are set up to win now. The window is quickly closing and if that’s the case, we need to go all in.

Moreover, that includes dumping Miles and letting Gregg walk.

bat off the bench.

i dont know of many pitchers that throw solely fastballs, so that could be a problem

1 Aaron down, 1 to go

by jesus christos on Nov 21, 2009 8:17 PM CST up reply actions

I think he can adjust.

I’m thinking of a younger Matt Stairs (which I know isn’t saying much). But again our window of winning it all is closing soon.

Plus for as much as we know

He could be our starting 1B in 2011….defense wayyyy down…power relatively same as DLee?

I give up Wells in a heartbeat for Granderson.

The whole Rich Hill thing has me nervous.

Yes.

A. Sam Fuld, IMO, is a defensive replacement at best.
B. I think he’d be relatively cheap and is a good spot start.

Marshall

Wells and Marmol are needed next year, and Castro should be untouchable.

by TheGrinch13 on Nov 22, 2009 3:46 PM CST up reply actions

I do think a market could open for Fukudome

without us eating the whole contract. He’d make a lot of sense for the Giants, who just suffered through Randy Winn in RF and could use some OBP. There are two problems, however. First, Dome’s desires might not match up with the trade market. Second, you probably have to wait for the FA market to thin – and then where are we left – playing Jake Fox or Garet Anderson in RF?

I’d keep Dome this year because the Cubs need top of the order bats anyway. Best case scenario is that he raises his value this season and you can trade him next season if you really want, or wouldn’t mind keeping him because he’s playing well enough.

Is he traded yet?

by DGU on Nov 22, 2009 6:24 AM CST reply actions

We could get rid of Fukudome

If we paid about 1/2 of his salary. It’s not worth it unless you find a pigeon to take him off our hands for someone with another bad contract and with upside, like Luis Castillo. I’d rather trade Bradley in a deal for him though.

I think that if Fukudome doesn’t hit, that he should become a 4th outfielder/pinch-hitter/defensive replacement. Lou should be sitting the non-performers, no matter how much money they make. If they don’t like it, they can quit and we can spend their unpaid money on someone else.

by TheGrinch13 on Nov 22, 2009 3:49 PM CST up reply actions

But Fukudome did hit.

His wOBA in 2009 was .346 – that’s well above league average. And no player is going to quit if quitting means foresaking his salary.
