But speaking as just about anything else… As far as I’m concerned – this couldn’t happen to a nicer rooftop building owner.

Without knowing much about the specifics on this unique relationship, could this be Rickett’s way of saying “Enjoy the Holidays, now fill our stockings with some cash and the signs come down!” ?

Maybe at the Winter Meetings, Tom Ricketts will have a short conversation with Mike Ilitch (Tigers owner)

Mike will mention that times are tough in the Motor City. Economic turmoil is really putting the squeeze on him. Tom will lend a sympathetic ear and then offer to do a favor for Mike.

Mike: “Really? What kind of favor?”

Tom: “Well, I just put these billboards at Wrigley and I’m looking for a sponsor. I could let you advertise Little Caesar’s Pizza there for a nominal fee of just $1.”

Mike [flabbergasted]: “Wow – that’s really generous of you, Tom. If you’re serious, of course I’ll take you up on that. Man, I can’t begin to tell you how much this helps me out.” [breaks out in huge grin, reaches out to shake Tom’s hand]

Tom [returns the handshake]: “Glad I could be of service, Mike. And maybe someday, you can do a favor for me.”

Mike [still smiling]: “Sure, Tom. No problem. Anytime. Whatever you want.”

Tom: “That time is now, Mike. Granderson for Bradley and Miles – straight up.” [increases pressure on handshake ever so slightly…]

Mike [smile disappears from face]: “Um… er…. uh….”

Calm down

Looking at the way they built it, it doesn’t seem at all like a permanent structure. In fact, it looks rickety enough that it’s questionable whether the city would even allow it to remain in place once people are in the bleachers. The Cubs are just twisting Gramatis’ arm, which they should’ve done a long time ago. They probably would not have put that up unless they were confident a deal could be reached before Opening Day.

Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so.

by hip2bsquare on Nov 23, 2009 9:57 AM CST up reply actions

Temporary structure

Looks to me like they had someone draw up a rough plan, run down to Home Depot, and erect something temporary. This lets the neighbor get a view of what is to come and if he doesn’t agree to something, the Cubs get the ball rolling on something permanent. The Cubs have done a great job making additions to Wrigley fit in. I have no doubt that they could do the same in erecting a structure that replace this temporary board.

I feel like I missed something,

why is the casino ad more objectionable than the beer ad? Or, for that matter the TV add, or the Ricketts resturant ad?

While I never thought the casino ad looked right, these internal billboards could potentially be VERY gaudy, What would stop the homeowner from putting up a highway type billboard that extended up from his rooftop?

I don’t like it.

EXACTLY

This guy is making money off the Cubs and has been thumbing his nose at them since he bought the building. The Cubs
allowed the grandfathered in advertising on the buildings but balked years ago when some buildings tried to put up MORE ads. The Cubs warned them if they did , they would block them. The Cubs have every right to block this jackass from making money promoting a casino if they want. His building has no special value save his ability to get it on camera during Cub games. Suppose he decided to sell his “space” to Coors ? That would be a huge problem for the Cubs who make a lot of money with Budweiser. If he does not want to ’play ball" with the Cubs , than screw him.

I'm playing the devils advocate here ...

but why do the Cubs think they have a right to “allow” a homeowner what advertisment to paint on his roof?

I don’t like it either, but it seems to come with the territory. Putting tarps on the fence, or these new internal billboards seems childish. If they were smart they would have included the homewoner in the deal for the Bud Light Bleacher branding, and this all would have been avoided.

I don’t like the casino ad, but I don’t have any reason to prefer Ann-Busch either, or Coors, for God’s sakes he could sell advertising to the White Sox. If they don’t like how the homeowner is advertising then do something more constructuve than build a higher fence. They could buy the rights to resell ads on his roof, or better yet buy the building and put up a digital scoreboard.

Correct.

The thing is really ugly, but there’s no doubt that Tom Gramatis has attempted to make money off the Cubs without being a good rooftop neighbor like the other rooftop clubs (he’s the guy who tried to get out of the deal when he put up the two new buildings on Sheffield).

Not to me

I have ZERO sympathy for a guy with a history of trying to screw the Cubs. He wants something for nothing. I have always wished the old regime had cracked down on the rooftops as soon as they stopped being places for residents and their friends to watch games and starting being for profit businesses but since the Cubs got a cut of the profit I understand why they went along. Mr. Gramatis is welcome to his building and his ad but not to a free view from the Wrigley cameras.

FYI the one owner who never gets any appreciation is the lady who owns the building right across from the LF corner. She is the only one who never tried to exploit it by building seats or selling advertising.

This whole discussion strikes me as slightly strange...

Back in the days when I was still in Chicago the roof tops were populated by a few tens of residents with small charcoal grills, a picnic basket (or two) and some beach chairs. This is how I remember the roofs of Wrigley, and they were part of the familiar atmosphere of the friendly confines.

I fully understand that times and requirements change…

I lived in one (the dark red brick 6 flat on Sheffield) for a year back in '91 (I think)

The “Rooftop Evolution” was just starting to gain traction – I think installing lights in ’88 and the ’89 playoffs were the real triggers.

Wasn’t much up there back then – just a couple of bleacher stands like you’d see at a little league field. Kinda like this but with a couple more rows.

As tenants we could go up and watch the games but we were limited as to how many friends we could bring up and had to submit names beforehand. But at least it was free. One side of the rooftop was for tenants (and friends) and the other side was for the owner (George Loukas) and his ‘friends’.

Whether or not his ‘friends’ were paying customers, I don’t know. But George did provide food & drink for them (he had a grill set up in back, manned by some of his Cubby Bear workers no doubt), whereas we were on our own.

Other rooftops at the time were in various states of buildout – some were still in lawn-chair & coolers mode while others were starting to get more permanent (and bigger) structures. They (the rooftop owners) were not nearly as organized then as they are now.

I was hanging out there one time after a game when Luis Gonzales walked by with a couple buddies. He stopped, said hi and started to introduce himself. I laughed and said “I know who you are…”

We talked for awhile. It was his first full season in majors (Houston) and he was just in awe of Wrigley Field. He thought it was so cool that I lived right across from Wrigley Field. I laughed again – how do I explain to the guy that him getting to play in Wrigley Field (and get paid some serious coin too) way way way out-trumps living across from it… ;-)

Well, Mr. CF,.........

……….I suspect my posse and I will find new digs if this contraption is still standing come Opening Day 2010.

That said, it would come in handy in April/May/September, because the stiff breezes off the lake at that time of year are mighty cold in the top row. We routinely drape a poncho over the railing to act as a wind break. This ugly sign would fix that.

However, it’s dark green color will certainly collect heat in June/July/August and make the location unbearable. Further, TV cameras will likely be fixed on this thing, effectively “outing” me on those days I’m trying to escape work.

I’m a pretty peeved season ticket holder……….

How would a board that runs longitudinally east-west and situated to your north shield you from an easterly wind?

Because the lake obviously extends far enough to be reached from a heading of less than 90 degrees. The closer you get to 360, though, the further away the lake is and the less likely it is to cool the stadium.

Maybe Ricketts isn't the refreshing change from the Trib we all hope he'd be.

Remember when TribCo tried to pull this same crap a few years ago? We all howled about about it then.

What I can’t believe is that many here are in favor of the signboards because they’ll bring in more revenue to the team! It ain’t going into your pockets, friends. I want a few more good players who fit into an as-yet-not-elucidated overall philosophy of winning rather than more cash flow for already uber-wealthy owners. The Cubs and Wrigley have been ATMs for a quarter of a century now but I haven’t seen a World Series appearance yet.

Joe, you coulda made us proud!

by copingwiththecubs on Nov 23, 2009 8:56 AM CST reply actions

Hmmm

Last time I checked “a few more good players” is going to cost money. So therefore bringing in more revenue to the team is one way to improve it. What I can’t believe is this notion that owners of professional sports teams are like “Mr. Potter” sitting in their offices counting the money they are making off the little people and laughing all the way to the bank. While large sports franchises make alot of revenue (and seek to maximize it) they also have alot of expenses.
In fact, the Cubs over the last quarter of a century have actually failed at maximizing revenue in their ballpark, its one reason why advertising in the park itself was pretty much non-existant.

As for your argument about the Trib putting screens up, that was a clear infraction by the rooftop owners – who were charging people to watch Cubs games on their buildings. The Cubs were/are entitled to protect their interests. If you lived in one of the buildings and watched some games thats one thing, if you start charging at the door – your making profit off of someone elses goods/services – not cool and not legal.

Looks like a good block to me.

Cuts it from high first, high home (at least somewhat), and I doubt low first is going to be shooting that way much. The low home robo is also flagged off that way.

I suspect the permanent installation will be designed to do that completely, so there’s no chance the casino sign will be visible from any camera position.

Those poor Sun-Times schmucks

What will they do, now that they can’t react by penning column after column about the “Big, bad, Tribsters” and how they’re crushing an “innocent” homeowner?

Landmark Status

I’m just curious if those billboards would be considered in violation of Wrigley’s landmark status. If not, it might not be a bad location for a Jumbotron screen which the Cubs could fill with advertising between innings.

Jumbotron

Actually it is interesting the Ricketts’ have taken this step…since I think most people in the know believe that building would be the eventual location of a Wrigley Field video board.

You’d think the Cubs would try to play nice with these people for future negotiations. But with that being said, baseball in general is quite paranoid with gambling of any sort.

Jumbotrons

am I the only person that finds them distracting?….I cant stop looking at them……I feel like I miss the game!

just sit in the bleachers then

If a Jumbotron does ever go up at Wrigley, chances are it’s going to be behind the bleachers so eyes forward, cold beer in hand and you should be just fine.

Only the

Scoreboard and Marquee are protected. Hence the addition of ribbon boards and the UA adds in the outfield. These are not a violation.

I agree, it could be a good place for a Jumbotron.

Which is why it's puzzling they did this...

… instead of trying to negotiate exactly such a deal with Tom Gramatis.

you don't think they already tried?

C’mon Al – there have been many other situations in the past where you’ve presumed there’s a lot going on behind the scenes that we never hear about, why would this be any different?

I have a hard time believing that Tom Ricketts wakes up one day and says “I’m gonna put up some rooftop ad-blocking billboards in the bleachers” just like that.

I’m sure he tried to play nice, reached out to Gramatis and most likely got a smartass “sez you” response. So be it.

What will be interesting is to see what the Gramatis public response will be. I’m guessing he goes the injured victim route and says he’s just joe six-pack trying to make a living.

Yeah, you're probably right.

Gramatis can’t play “injured victim” any more — he tried that with his new buildings on Sheffield, as you know, and failed there, too.

Wasn't there talk

That Gramatis planned on tearing that building down anyway, in order to put even more seating on a new rooftop building? Or is it just my imagination? Because if that was the plan I could see how any talk of Jumbotrons or sharing advertising revenue with the Cubs hitting a brick wall.

those were the initial rumblings I heard "on the corner" shortly after he bought the place.

He was going to put up something similar to what he already had on Sheffield; big hulking concrete monstrosities – not that I’m biased or anything… ;-)

Then he had a little run-in with the city on setting up a souvenir vendor stand in the front-yard, maybe without paying the proper fees, licenses, etc? Not sure, but ultimately the stand was removed. So I suppose it’s possible that any further development plans were put on hold for awhile. In the meantime, he apparently figured out how to squeeze more money out of the rooftop ad.

In terms of Jumbotron, I’ve never heard anything about that attributed to either him or the Cubs. It’s only been discussed because it’s the most logical spot – almost all the other buildings already have had significant investments in their rooftop structures for seating purposes. As previously discussed here, it seems like a Jumbotron would have special foundation/support requirements, best achieved it would seem when building from scratch.

tear down?

if he did that how high could he go?

Good question.

There’s a building with a rooftop club right across Kenmore, so I’m guessing at least this high:

I suspect it is.

Gramatis doesn’t have a reputation as someone easy to negotiate with, either.

Posted this also in the other thread. In case you missed it there...

… I just came back from a drive past the ballpark.

Those things are even more "rickety" (pun intended) than they look in the photos. It really does look like they went to Home Depot, got some lumber, painted it green (well, most of it, anyway) and put it up almost literally overnight.

As pointed out above, this is being done to attempt to deprive Tom Gramatis’ advertiser (Horseshoe) of the exposure it gets on TV (it won’t block the view from much of the seating area). It may well be that the Cubs tried to negotiate with Gramatis and failed, and this is their message to him — play fair or we won’t.
