Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

There are a lot of perfectly valid reasons Sam Fuld should not be the starting center fielder for the Cubs but the two mentioned by MuskRAT are not among them. First she claims because his a diabetic they can't be sure he would be healthy enough. Fuld has NEVER had an issue with diabetes, now crashing into walls & fences, and other exuberant parts of his playing have over the years cost him playing time but none of it was related to his diabetes. His O'fer from June- Sept in RBI's was largely beyond his control. He had fewer than 100 ABs and most of those were in the 8 spot. He batted .299 with 29 hits so it is not like he was stranding runners in scoring position all the time like certain other players. The fact that Fuld has little power and has not played a whole lot of major league games are both pretty strong reasons not go into the season with him as your starting center fielder but Muskat is too stupid to put forth a logical argument.

Muskat is a tool

Didn’t Santo have a pretty good career as a diabetic? And that was at least 40 years ago. I would think the meds have come along way since then.

Yea, how's Ronnie doing now?

As a diabetic, Sam Fuld and Jay Cutler have nothing to worry about unless they are being stupid with taking care of themselves, and with the money they have, they can pay people to remind them to give them shots, etc. and get healthy foods. Muskat is stupid

Sam Fuld is latest version of Matt Murton

Every year it’s the same thing…certain Cub fans go off the deep end in adoration for an aging, limited skill minor league journeyman. Sam Fuld is a Triple A player, period. Carrie Muskrat might be off base on the diabetes thing, but she hits the mark otherwise.

Fuld is an excellent bench player

He has great defense , speed and is a very patient batter, all of which the Cubs need on the bench. I could have sworn you said Fuld would be a good bench player earlier this year but if you want to agree with Muskat be my guest.

And this is coming from his biggest fan too

I really haven’t gotten a vibe around here that anyone is expecting too much of Fuld, unless you call 4th/5th OF spot for league minimum too much.

by madcow256 on Nov 24, 2009 9:02 AM CST up reply actions

Yes the extremes on Fuld are frustrating.

I don’t see any way you expect him to be starting CF , short of a major injury, but he certainly has significant value on the bench. I can understand a little “backlash” against all the attention he got this season but in a really bad year, guys who do more than expected like Fuld and Wells tend to stand out. Fuld is too good and too old to be stashed in Iowa so if for any reason the Cubs don’t keep him as a 4th/5th outfielder I assume he would be included in a trade.

Reminds me of Doug Dascenzo.

A quality bench guy, awesome defense, great clubhouse guy, but unfortunately, just light of stick. There’s also the “little guy” factor. There is something about a little guy who is not the most talented guy, but who just plays his ass off, you can’t help but root for him. The idea that Sam Fuld will be an everyday outfielder for the Cubs is a pipe dream, and that is by no means a knock on Fuld, who I have a world of respect for in every way. But the bottom line is the Cubs have a very crowded outfield, and he’s simply not going to be able to be a starter. But with his speed and defense, he’s a perfect type of bench guy for a defensive replacement / pinch hitter / pinch runner role.

Well I find him interesting

but the reason for this post was that I was really outraged by Muskat’s now discredited claim that he could not be trusted to play a whole season because he is a diabetic . She also showed she was pretty much clueless as to what Fuld’s role is and as well as what his skills are but now of course in the “revised” version it all looks normal.
Trust me my “obsession” with Fuld is small potatoes compared to my true obsession with Maddux. I probably check for Fuld stuff once every two weeks. I get DAILY google alerts for Maddux and he is not even playing.

Forget both Fuld and Maddux for a minute , how screwed up is it that Cubs.com totally revised the piece in a matter of hours ?

would you rather they (cubs.com) had left it alone?

I think it’s a good thing someone was on the ball enough to see how inappropriate it was and see to it that changes were made.

Of course, in an ideal world, Carrie herself would have acknowledged the inappropriateness of the comments as part of the rewrite and perhaps even apologized for them. Needless to say though, we don’t live in an ideal world.

of the truly insulting nature of the comments on diabetes rather than the Soviet style disappearance and re-editing of the original remarks as if they never happened.
The second part where she more or less totally rewrote her assessment of Fuld’s playing ability and future role is also pretty bizarre. I am guessing the Cubs keep a closer eye on her writing before putting it up from now on. I give them credit for fixing it but again it should have been done in a way that acknowledged the error rather then acting as if it never existed.

Cubs By The Numbers

Cubs By The Numbers is a history of the ballclub by uniform number, but the biographies help trace the history of our beloved team in a new way.
