Wow.

He has fallen a long way.

Still, this may work out for the White Sox. They are trying to build a strong bench with former great players. It could work… for 2010.

At near the league minimum...

… is this really a gamble?

Damn it.

That is a very good signing for them for that amount of money. No risk whatsoever.

Performance bonuses or signing bonus?

If it’s performance, at least they know they will have gotten their money’s worth if they have to pay it. Still, even for 1 year at $1.5 million, I would have done that. If it’s only $500K guaranteed, though, that’s unbelievable.

according to

this it is performance based bonus structure

CHICAGO — The price definitely was right for the White Sox concerning the free-agent signing of Andruw Jones, a $500,000 deal for 2010 with up to an additional $1 million in performance bonuses, as announced by the team Wednesday.

Well..

He got paid $37 million over the past two seasons by the Dodgers for doing virtually nothing. So he still is way, way, way, way, way ahead of the game.

Minimal risk move for a team with not a lot of money to spend

Good for Kenny Williams. He usually comes up aces in the moves he makes, so this will be interesting to see if it pans out. I’d have to believe that Jones has to win a roster spot in spring training and is guaranteed nada.

No risk, possible rewards

If he puts up Dodger numbers they can just whack him.

This is a move

Hendry should have made. Instead we are fretting whether or not to resign Reed Johnson.
From a personality standpoint I really dislike Kenny Williams. I dislke the character of some of the players he gets (Robbie Alomar, AJ, Conseco). But he has guts, which I really do not think Hendry has. We wanted Peavy, he got him. The Cubs need a gutsy GM, not Mr. Overpay No-Trade-Clause.

by ChicagoRobb on Nov 25, 2009 8:08 PM CST reply actions

I understand your point

but the Cubs didn’t need Peavy. I still don’t like that deal for a pitcher who has been hurt twice. Besides, Hendry did pick up Harden. They could give him a big deal as a Peavy-lite pitcher.

Which one will get more starts in 2010?

I'm sorry but Andruw Jones is now a DH.

by Cub Style on Nov 25, 2009 8:56 PM CST up reply actions

explain this to me, would ya

Andruw Jones isn’t really a CF anymore. He’s a CF in the same way Fukudome was a CF last year. What exactly is Andruw Jones going to bring to this squad? A right-handed bench bat with some pop? Oh wait, there’s Jake Fox and potentially Jeff Baker for that.

Short of it is, what was the point of adding Andruw Jones for us?

by toonsterwu on Nov 26, 2009 8:13 PM CST up reply actions

I guess that is why Hendry isn't gutsy

Signing a player the Cubs don’t need is gutsy.

just wondering.....

…. I was reading a bit about Nelson Cruz…..is he a possibility for the Cubs….he seems good and inexpensive.

Like I said, the Sox better hope they don’t have any major injuries next season.
