What's so refreshing?

Pretty much everything mentioned there has been covered here as well.

I doubt they are going to go after Hudson if they really think Castro is close

Because that would leave Hendry & Piniella favorite Scrappy McDoubleClutch as the odd man out.

Ions away

that made me laugh…..this just goes to show that Castro is being way overhyped already, he might as well change his name to Starlin Patterson

He said Hak-Ju Lee is ions away, not Castro.

I’m not sure why he thinks Castro is slow, that’s the first person I’ve heard say that.

Its Eons not Ions

He is being overhyped

but

a) as thehat noted, the ions away comment is about Lee

b) for some reason, Goldstein doesn’t take into account any projection on upside on Castro, which he does for other players, including a guy like Vitters. For example, Vitters power is a projection as many are uncertain that, even if he can overcome the discipline issues, that he will have plus power because of the plane.

Also, Goldstein is the only person that has suggested that Castro has poor range. Actually, most “eye” reports (people that have seen him, including myself) suggest that he has good range. As for speed, the idea that he is slow on the bases is a bit flawed. What he is is a guy that is not a polished base stealer, but he isn’t slow on the bases, which is a small distinction, but a key one, imo. Now, I’m not sure he has the plus speed that others have suggested, but that’s saying he isn’t an elite runner, and only a few guys are (and that, with age, his speed was going to come down anyways).

Yes, Castro is overhyped. Yes, if you take him on face value right now, and don’t factor in projection, he’s not this elite guy yet. But few folks that look at prospects would actually not ponder projection. I don’t understand why Goldstein isn’t factoring in projection.

Here’s the most important thing to remember IMO which Goldstein somewhat acknowledges – even if Castro doesn’t hit the high end potential some suggest, he’s still an exciting prospect, a, as Goldstein notes, potential above average big leaguer, due to the position and his skillset said for the position.

I'm not looking for the next A-Rod

I’ve heard comparisons to Tony Fernandez. I’d take that.

by rlpete on Nov 28, 2009 11:31 AM CST up reply actions

Absolutely.

Tony Fernandez was a very good player for a very long time — not HoF caliber, but a four-time All-Star who was a key part of five playoff teams and played outstanding defense.

Absolutely agree

If Starlin Castro can be the next Tony Fernandez then that would be an outstanding development and the kid would be the best position prospect developed by this organization in over 2 decades.

Fernandez....

… had his first September callup at 21, was a part-time player at 22 and a regular at 23. He played almost two full years at Triple-A before becoming a major league regular.

Castro isn’t ready yet.

Agree

Starlin Castro is not major league ready. For Jim Hendry to send out subtle hints that Castro will have opportunity to win a big league job in spring training is troubling. It further adds fuel to the fire that Hendry is incompetent and reduced to grasping at straws given his fouling up of things in recent years.

Goldstein has to carve out his niche.

Sometimes I wonder if he’s taking the stance he’s taking just to be contrarian. In some cases he looks better (down on Lars Anderson) and in some cases he looks worse (high on Donald Veal).

For us consumers, it’s good to have a diversity of scouting perspectives reflected.

Is he traded yet?

by DGU on Nov 28, 2009 12:17 PM CST up reply actions

When was he down on Lars Anderson?

And why?

I’ve never had a chance to see Lars but I’ve been hearing good things.

Did anyone notice

He said Marshall and Samardzija would be competing for the fifth spot? I think this guy had a brain fart, unless I have gotten dropped on my head like Jahvid Best(glad to know he’s doing better, at any rate), I’m pretty sure Gorzelanny is at the very least in that discussion, if not the leading candidate.
