One of my favorite times watching Cubs baseball

was the last three months of the Chip – Steve Stone relationship. Stone distanced himself from an overenthusiastic partner and a horrible baseball team with his trademarked sharp sarcasm.

Does this mean Judd Sirott has a chance at a big league pxp job, or will he stay w/ Chicago and the Blackhawks? What other candidates are out there?

Both of them are pretty pompous. I still haven’t gotten over Marty and Thom lumping all Cubs fans together as superstitious people who were bad sports. “It’s seeing stuff like this that makes you want the Cubs to lose.” That and, “Cubs fans are the worst fans and Cardinals fans are the best fans.” Yeah Thom. I’m sure Cubs fans were great when you worked for the Cubs. And I’m sure you should be propping up fans of your own team. Maybe Marty and Thom should have been complaining about how the Reds franchise has taken a nosedive instead of clinging to past glory.

Chip Caray -- good guy,

but mediocre in the booth. That ‘chatterbox’ currently in the Cubs booth is hands-down better than most of the jokers in MLB TV booths today.

Apparently certain individuals don’t hear other broadcasters across the country.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Nov 30, 2009 7:12 PM CST reply actions

agreed on all accounts

Caray will get another job because 1. he’s a big name and 2. there are some truly horrid announcers out there. Its unlikely that it won’t be in a big market, but for a small or mid market club, landing someone like Caray is a good get. Caray drove me nuts as the Cubs guy, blathering on about cotton candy, balls off the “fair pole” and all of his other annoyances, but he’ll end up somewhere.

It is interesting to see what the networks characterize as top talent, handing out the big jobs to guys like Chip and Matt Vasgersian. While there are a ton of bad announcers, there are also some great ones who fly under the radar. Outside of Chicago, Pat Hughes is not well known, and teamed with a top notch color man, he’d do a tremendous job announcing playoff baseball. With Hughes and Kasper, IMO, we’ve got two of the better PBP men in the business.

Anyhow, here’s an interesting read via the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

by dmlichte on Dec 1, 2009 1:17 PM CST up reply actions

From that piece

I’d bet he winds up on Fox South/Peachtree. Chip really wasn’t terrible on Cubs telecasts — just average. Stone made hime better. The opposite — Chip & Joe Carter. Joe was so bad Chip had to carry him, and that really hurt the entire broadcast.

Caray left the Cubs to do Braves games, and to work with his father. With TBS getting out of ‘local’ coverage into network games — that changed his role completely. I think (as he seems to admit) that he’s better when he works every day. When you don’t work as much — you lose an edge, and fall into “crutches.”

The TBS network job didn’t suit him, and it showed. But, as I said, he seems to be a good guy, (Chip was always a local radio interview guest when the Cubs were in town, and he sounded pretty genuine in those discussions) and he should be fine.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Dec 1, 2009 1:01 PM CST up reply actions

The spokesman also said there was no rush to find a replacement for Caray and said that his Braves and TBS duties could possibly be shared by several broadcasters.

This makes me think that we’ll get moar Sager. The mind boggles.

There has been bashing of Chip in the past here

It has to come from people who don’t have access to all of the really, really bad baseball pbp teams across the country.

Chip did trade on his name. That’s OK. It’s the family business. It happens everywhere. He might not have gotten out of Omaha, or any such market if his last name wasn’t Caray, but so what, you know?

The current #1 pbp guy with Padres TV did over 10 years of AA Ball in Tulsa and some back up work on ESPN. That’s really toiling in the low-pay district for a long time. This guy is about as good as Skip. But, Skip barely spent a day in such markets due to his name.

Skip’s OK. Average. Not really good. Not really bad. No reason for some here to bash him so much.

Air ah mass Ramirez is our third baseman

I just don’t get it. If he was our back up 3B and wasn’t an all star, etc, I’d understand. But Ramirez (trying to be unbiased) is one of the better players in the game and is the best bat on a team that is well known through out the nation. To be on a national broadcast and mispronounce a name like that for two consecutive years in the playoffs is just mind blowing.

Seems like a lot of these PXP guys do well when they are paired with the right combination.

I always thought Stony and Chip were decent working as a pair (in their Cub days), but didn’t “sound” as well paired with other guys, like Harry Carey, etc.

He's really physically unable to do it now

He misses so many games because of procedures and he won’t go to NYC because of ’69….Dave Otto does more and more games every year

I think it's part of it

But he seems pretty connected to his family, too.

I think it's keeping him alive too

But Carlos Marmol at closer isn’t going to be good for his health

Keith Moreland spent some time...

…in both the radio and TV booths this past season. He was doing analysis, though, not PxP. I thought he was pretty good.

Moreland was barely average.

Eric Karros, is certainly superior. He’d be great in the Cubs radio booth.

I hope Santo stays as long as he wants to

But your first line, if true, speaks volumes about what we’re used to.

I enjoyed Moreland's Texas twang...

…but, yeah, I guess Karros would probably be better.

Karros does a fine job

Sutcliffe isn’t half bad either. When talking about pitchers he’s very good (for obvious reasons)

I also thought Moreland did a fine job.

You could tell he followed the team.

I know he does Texas football, so he’s used to being on the air.

he's not a former Cub and hopefully won't be for awhile...

…but you gotta figure when Dempster’s pitching days are over, he wouldn’t be adverse to getting behind a microphone on a full-time basis. Again, though, I’m sure he’d be the color/analyst guy, not PxP. I could easily see him being a Rick Sutcliffe type.

Not sure where PxP guys come from, but I don’t think it’s the playing field.

Some have come from the field

Random names as they come to me:
Uecker, Harrleson, Farmer, Boudreau did some PxP, Mike Shannon.

I’m sure there are others. But more often than not, the better ones have spent a lot of time honing their craft.

also add

Rick Monday and Dan Gladden to the list. Not sure if Monday does it as much these days in LA since they hired Charley Steiner. Gladden does mostly Color, but also does a few innings of PBP with John Gordon in Minnesota, and he’s great.

by dmlichte on Dec 2, 2009 12:09 PM CST up reply actions

Joe Garagiola and Tony Kubek both did PBP for NBC at times.

Jerry Coleman, a longtime Yankee, did PBP for the Padres on radio for many years.

And, apparently Coleman

is still around, in a very reduced capacity as he pushes to 90. I guess he’s coming back for another year.

out here in the Bay Area does p-b-p, and you’d never think “ex-player” when you hear him.

Doesn't Mike Krukow share PBP with him?

Monday.....

…splits with Steiner on road trips because Scully doesn’t travel. For home games, Scully does the first three innings as a simulcast, Steiner/Monday does 4-6 on radio, Scully does TV alone 4-6, then Sculy does a simulcast from 7 to the end of the game.

Don Drysdale did play by play for the Angels, White Sox and Dodgers. Jerry Reuss and Al Downing have also some some limited play by play for the Dodgers.

Dave Otto?

Lou has also done some post season work when he was with the then Devil Rays

All three of those did color commentary, not PxP

And Piniella was . . . not good.

I’m guessing you could probably make a drinking game out of his use of the word “look.”

I've mentioned this before

But my favorite Chip Caray moment was when he was calling a Braves game on TV. His wife had brought his infant son up to the booth and Chip was bouncing him on his lap when he came out with this: “Just like his grandfather, he likes a bottle before bedtime.”
