Cubs Should Go After Rich Hill
It was reported today that Rich Hill is now a free agent. I think that he has enormous potential and is worth at least a minor league deal with an invite to spring training. If he gets his back situation fixed, he could fill a spot nicely in the rotation.
I'm guessing that a lot of teams will go after him, with the potential that he has shown in the past. I'd hate to see the Cardinals get him and then watch Dave Duncan turn him into a 15-18 game winner.
Just think about the following quote from Michael Barrett about Hill which I found on Wikipedia.org:
|
[Hill's] curveball is so electric that the first couple of times I caught him, I had a tendency to come up on the curve because it bites so much. You just don't see a left-handed curveball like that anymore. When he's good, it doesn't hang, and it's nearly unhittable." |

Why
would we want a guy we traded when he has only gotten worse? I am sure there are players that had good things to say about Aaron Miles at one time too.

Thank you good sir.
Now, go ahead and actually hit the “rec” button please.
I feel like this post deserves the full pic hijack treatment. Please help me.
The funny part about Rich Hill
Is if he signs with a team and becomes the Cy Young winner at some point in his career we’ll be treated to revisionist “history lessons” on how the Cubs gave up on him and gave him away for nothing.
I wish him the best of luck with his future endeavors but I think he’s going to become an afterthought in baseball.
Ooh....uh, yeah. I'm going to have to go ahead and...sort of...disagree with you there. Yeah.
Uh, he’s been real flaky lately and I’m not sure that he’s the caliber of pitcher you want for our team He’s been having some problems with his control.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

Why don't we
just allow all those other teams to “go after him”.
Lets just say tis the season for giving.

Normally
I’d say this type of situation is worth a look on a minor league deal. Realistically, with Lou here, I just don’t see either side doing it, even on a minor league deal.
I think if Boston comes calling, he may ponder going home. If not, I think he’ll look for either Baltimore or another low stress situation, maybe San Diego.
Only if we get Barrett back as well
Seriously, you quoted Michael Barrett?!!?!? Cmon…
“When he’s good, it doesn’t hang, and it’s nearly unhittable” . Well yea, when a breaking pitch is thrown properly, it doesn’t hang. Usually it is thrown properly when a pitcher is throwing well.

That Hill has excellent stuff...
when healthy may actually be the silliest thing that I’ve heard in months. You do understand that most of us have watched him pitch, yes?
Nice fastball. Inconsistent breaking ball. No third pitch. Terrible control. Very hittable the second time through the lineup and beyond.
All that said, I’d still give him a NRI is I were Jim Hendry, if only as a matter of organizational courtesy.
If you were Jim Hendry
You’d then allow him to break camp and put him on the 60-day DL for 7 years so he got fully vested in MLB pension.

Agreed, Hill was awesome when
his curve could be taken for a strike. When the batter could rest their bat on the shoulder and reach base or just jack fastballs, not so good.
if this was still new to me, i wouldn't understand
If he wants a non-roster invite to ST
… sure. Otherwise, pass.
I was a big Rich Hill fan. He was about the only thing to watch in the final months of the ‘06 season. That said, the way he completely fell apart doesn’t make me think he’ll ever bounce back.
If he's willing to come cheap, sure
And the team can’t figure him into any of our plans at the Major League level. If somehow he figures out why he can’t hit the strike zone and fixes that and is able to contribute in some way, that would be a gift.
The baseball season
is officially over, making laughing at this thread probably the most fun that we’ll have all day.
