Cubs Should Go After Rich Hill

It was reported today that Rich Hill is now a free agent.  I think that he has enormous potential and is worth at least a minor league deal with an invite to spring training.  If he gets his back situation fixed, he could fill a spot nicely in the rotation.

I'm guessing that a lot of teams will go after him, with the potential that he has shown in the past.  I'd hate to see the Cardinals get him and then watch Dave Duncan turn him into a 15-18 game winner.

Just think about the following quote from Michael Barrett about Hill which I found on Wikipedia.org:

[Hill's] curveball is so electric that the first couple of times I caught him, I had a tendency to come up on the curve because it bites so much. You just don't see a left-handed curveball like that anymore. When he's good, it doesn't hang, and it's nearly unhittable."

It's worth a shot.  The guy has excellent stuff when healthy, and I think it will just take some work to get him straightened out.

Why

would we want a guy we traded when he has only gotten worse? I am sure there are players that had good things to say about Aaron Miles at one time too.

The funny part about Rich Hill

Is if he signs with a team and becomes the Cy Young winner at some point in his career we’ll be treated to revisionist “history lessons” on how the Cubs gave up on him and gave him away for nothing.

I wish him the best of luck with his future endeavors but I think he’s going to become an afterthought in baseball.

by ak123 on Nov 4, 2009 4:59 PM CST reply actions

Ooh....uh, yeah. I'm going to have to go ahead and...sort of...disagree with you there. Yeah.

Uh, he’s been real flaky lately and I’m not sure that he’s the caliber of pitcher you want for our team He’s been having some problems with his control.

As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

Why don't we

just allow all those other teams to “go after him”.

Lets just say tis the season for giving.

Normally

I’d say this type of situation is worth a look on a minor league deal. Realistically, with Lou here, I just don’t see either side doing it, even on a minor league deal.

I think if Boston comes calling, he may ponder going home. If not, I think he’ll look for either Baltimore or another low stress situation, maybe San Diego.

Only if we get Barrett back as well

Seriously, you quoted Michael Barrett?!!?!? Cmon…

“When he’s good, it doesn’t hang, and it’s nearly unhittable” . Well yea, when a breaking pitch is thrown properly, it doesn’t hang. Usually it is thrown properly when a pitcher is throwing well.

Nice fastball. Inconsistent breaking ball. No third pitch. Terrible control. Very hittable the second time through the lineup and beyond.

Cubs By The Numbers

Cubs By The Numbers is a history of the ballclub by uniform number, but the biographies help trace the history of our beloved team in a new way. For everyone who's a Cubs fan, anyone who ever wore the uniform is like family. Cubs By The Numbers reintroduces readers to some of their long-lost ancestors, even ones they think they already know.
