Strange addition for Boston
Where does Hermida play? The Red Sox are going to bring Jason Bay back no matter what the pricetag. So Hermida is backup to Ellsbury and Drew?
Why.

No he can't play CF
but I think Hermida is the same kind of move they made when they picked up Wily Mo Pena and Hee Seop Choi a while back, the player has enough talent that if the Sox can make him work, then they’ll make him fit.
Inspector #23 certifies that the above post is sarcasm free, most certainly not what she said, and chock full of intangibles, although regressing to the intangible mean, as you'd expect.

It's the Red Sox
All their backups need to be top notch.

I think it's a very shrewd move
While Alvarez is a decent arm, they didn’t give up much. They get a talented guy they had been tracking for awhile (he was rumored as the key piece of the Manny to Florida trade that fell apart). The potential has always been there with Hermida. Certainly, there are issues, as Hermida’s struggled the last two years. It’s not unreasonable, though, to think that, with that porch in RF in Boston, that he might produce more offensively. They likely won’t depend on him and will still pursue Bay (or Holliday … likely Bay). That said, Bay isn’t a certainty to come back, so Hermida is a decent backup plan, insurance. They could probably flip Hermida down the line if they don’t need him and get back a similar return to what they gave up.
Short of it is, good deal, good insurance, good gamble on potential.

Makes sense.
The Red Sox always seem particular adept at filling out their organizational depth.

There's a player out there I've always connected in my mind to Hermida
that AZ didn’t tender a contract to in Chad Tracy. He could make some sense to the Cubs as a LH power option from the bench and possible RF option.
Is he traded yet?

If Tracy is healthy, he could be useful...
… because he can play 3B as well as outfield.

this is a great catch
I would second this move. It would fit the bill for the Cubs. The guy is a heck of a hitter.
I think these are the types of moves Hendry is going to have to make. Barring the inevitable MB-trade, this makes the team better.
If you could pick up Tracy on the cheap, I think the Cubs could eat more of MB’s salary and get a upper-tier prospect from someone. Any Chase Utley-types coming up? :-D
