Bradley 3 Way-Trade????
According to Rosenthal a deal has been discussed that would send Bradley to Blue Jays, Overbay to the Mets, and Castillo to us. Get it done Hendry please!!

But he also says the Rays are the most interested
and I thought they killed the idea of a straight-up Bradley for Burrell swap a month ago.

Yeah
I’m hoping we can just split pay the difference this year and he’s all theirs next season in a potential 3 way trade. Rays want a free player and too that I say forget it.

Castillo is mediocre at best.
But why the “ugh”? What do you expect to get back? Everyone and their mother knows the Cubs have to move Milton. Hendry has very little leverage, so expect a return like this.
The fact that we don’t have to take on a bad contract is certainly a plus.

But why the "ugh"?
it was more of a “why-didnt-you-hit-that-ball-10ft-to-the-right-so-prior-wouldnt-implode-and-gonzalez-forgets-how-to-field-the-ball” kind of ugh. i guess i have no problem with castillo considering his contract isnt horrible like say rowand

That isn't a bad contract?
The Cubs would get much more value on MB over the next 2 years even if he repeated his 2009 numbers (doubtful) than they would with Castillo. He’s an absolute zero offensively and his defense is slipping big time.

Okay well the Cubs are not keeping him.
Can we just agree on that?
Assuming they don’t keep MB, name some specific players you think we have a realistic shot at getting. I don’t necessarily love Castillo, but we don’t have a lot to work with.

Why down on Castillo -
he’s basically Ryan Theriot, with better OBP, less CS, and the ability to switch-hit…

intrigue me. What would it take to get Crawford from them? Bradley’s and Crawford contract next year match up well. Would it be worth Bradley, Castro and Parker for Crawford.

Luis freaking Castillo? A second baseman with a glove that is in full decline and a bat that isn’t far behind? Not to mention blocking our top prospect with two of the worst freaking hitters we have (Theriot, Castillo).
These rumors are making me want Jeremy Bonderman.

What are you looking for...
…your talking about unloading a problem child that everyone knows the Cubs have to trade, and to top it off, a guy who is probably due for extended DL stints because his next two years are guaranteed.
If you were a GM of another club, what exactly would you be giving up to take a guy who may end up making you look like a fool?

I would be wondering why the Cubs aren't keeping him first of all
but that is a dead subject. Then I would wait for when the Cubs have to release him.
Taking back a player who can, at his best, produce what Milton basically did this year at his worst doesn’t appeal to me. Castillo is an aging player who provides only one single benefit for the Cubs in this deal- financial relief. Even that might not happen.

…to do the Cubs any favors here. Whoever takes Bradley off the Cubs hands will not be giving up any quality because they are taking a risk, and they know the Cubs have little leverage here.

We wouldn't be blocking Castro
Castillo is signed thru 2011, Castro is only 19 years old, he probably wouldn’t be able to contribute to the Cubs until after the final year of Castillo’s contract anyway.

by Damen Jackson on Nov 9, 2009 6:55 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
If it worked out where the Cubs only needed to pay Castillo's $$$
and not any more, then I suppose financially this deal is acceptable. You save $3 million for this season which might put you back in the Mike Cameron or Rich Harden range. You get the middle infield/leadoff type (though I freaking pray Castillo doesn’t leadoff) that Lou wants so badly.

That's been my thinking...
all along.
And I really hope people will stop the nonsense about Castro being blocked. It’s not like the Cubs will be committing tens of millions to the guy, or that even if Castro is ready after next season, that you can’t work him into the lineup gradually. Jeez.
by Damen Jackson on Nov 9, 2009 7:11 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
The blocking Castro thing was probably a bit dramatic
Obviously if he is ready the cubs will move whoever is in his way out of the way (at least I have to think they would). Working him into the lineup gradually isn’t the best idea though, I think when he’s ready (be it June 2010 or April 2011) he needs to play everyday.

his .318 wOBA this season
was well below league average. It ranked among the Micah Hoffpauir’s and Bobby Scales of the world. Most of Theriot’s value comes from his position (which he isn’t the greatest at) and the fact that his salary is basically nothing. The salary jump and position change that will both be coming is going to make everybody’s favorite scrappy player look a lot less appealing.

Burrell '10 = Karros '03?
At first I was completely opposed to Burrell, but now I am wondering if he might be a sort of 2010 version of Eric Karros.
Compare Burrell’s and Karro’s stats.

We had a position for Karros to play, we don’ have a DH or LF position for Burrell to play.

Absolutely, and the Cubs let Karros walk after 2003 with no regrets.
My point is simply that if the Cubs could get Karros-like productivity out of a Bradley trade we should be pretty happy.
I would rather the Cubs get 1-year of a player like Burrell than many years of someone like Rowand.

I'm with you here...
nji. I think the best move would be to keep Bradley. You want proof? Read over all these “proposed” trade scenarios and try to keep your lunch down.
However, I think this is more “posturing” than anything on JH’s part. He backed himself into the corner with the suspension and is realizing now that he revealed his hand with very little to gain. Now it’s biting him in the ass as he’s looking for a taker.
by Kansas25 on Nov 9, 2009 8:30 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
That's exactly what it is, posturing
Hendry says that MB will be back and that he thinks last year was merely a “hiccup” and that Bradley can still a good player (which very well could be the case) as a way to bring MB’s value up. Mildon Bradley talked his way out of a Cubs uniform and he will get traded.

So, if this is the MB return, what could our lineup look like?
Theriot SS
Castillo 2B
Lee 1B
Rami 3B
Sori LF
Dome RF
Cameron CF
Soto C
Bill James projects a .363 OBP for Castillo – which is good enough to leadoff, but batting Castillo and Theriot 1-2 is awfully anemic.

Theriot was third in the NL in outs made
Naturally he starts the game. Castillo wasn’t very bad last year, but like has been said a few times he is due for some regression. he’s aging and got very lucky last season. His .338 BABIP in 2009 probably won’t stay that high and his LD rate was 22.7% after being in the 15-18 range most of his career.
Just say no to players named Aaron on the Cubs.
by nji232 on Nov 9, 2009 9:36 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Last year he had an AVG and OBP of:
.302/.387
Even if he does regress, which is entirely possible, an AVG/OBP of .280/.350-.360 is still valuable out of the 2 hole.

by DTJchris on Nov 9, 2009 9:50 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Wrong. His xBABIP was 0.338 and he posted a nearly identical 0.342 BABIP.
He was not ‘lucky’, he’s a pure contact hitter and his above avg. BABIP is expected. Even regressing his LD% to 18.9%, his xBABIP would have been a robust 0.334.

Ah, tells you how good my reading is then
I still maintain my point that he won’t be good going forward. I think a Baker/Fontenot platoon can give you his numbers and do it without the horrid defense. I want nothing to do with Castillo.

Castillo works in the 2-hole
But I absolutely do not want Theriot’s .346 OBP (career .356) leading off. Those numbers are only marginally better than what Soriano was giving us in 2007 and 2008. I still advocate Dome leading off against RHP (with perhaps Reed/Fuld leading off against LHP).
Theriot’s bat belongs in the 7 or 8 hole. Anything higher than that is delusion, IMO.

That is posturing to say Bradley may be back.
I rarely say no way, but no way Bradley’s ego would fit back in the clubhouse after so many guys loudly, publicly busted his chops. He’d walk into the clubhouse, refuse to apologize for his behavior, and then start to pout when nobody apoligizes to him.
Hendry will need to be very creative, however he gets rid of Bradley. A multi-team deal may be the best way to get it done. There are lots of team looking to rid themselves of players and contracts. More teams and you can water down the bad taste.
As far as 2009 being a hiccup, well, Jim, it was more like the kind of all over body heaves I had on Sunday mornings in college.
by Nibbles on Nov 9, 2009 9:18 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
FINALLY... some people do get it
Just about ANY trade ideas brought up for MB would be a good idea. Forget how some guys’ numbers could be worse or better than MB. It’s almost as if he brings a huge cloud of negativity and suffocation to this team. It’s not something you can quantify.
Since this Cubs team has no dominant vocal leader, guys like MB can really kill clubhouses. Can you really imagine another summer of listening to talk radio, TV and the papers constatntly churning up controversy again?
