Fangraphs (Marc Hulet's) top 10 Cubs prospects
It's an interesting read. He doesn't include recent draft picks, so Brett Jackson isn't listed. The one big disagreement I have is with John Gaub in the top 10. He's good for his role, and he's about ready, but I've got a touch time putting a LOOGY in the top 10. I'm also a bit surprised he didn't have Kyler Burke in the top 10.

Yeah not mentioning Burke was one
of the things I disagreed with. I do agree with Lee being that high because I think he is that good. If Lee can add just alittle more power — he will be #1 or 2 on the list. Lee is still so raw that he will have time to grow that into his arsenal.
2010 is OUR year.
I think there's something to be said for
a guy who’s supposed to be the best LOOGY in the minors.
Of course, if traded, could he net another top prospect in return? Probably (closer to definitely) not. I think that makes him less than a top 10, but still a worthy prospect.
Hooray for CubsStats.blogspot.com !
agreed
I’m not demeaning Gaub A very worthy prospect. But I would’ve put several guys ahead of him – Jeffry Antigua, Kyler Burke to name two.
What I liked
was the apparent readiness of many of these guys. They project four of our top 10 to arrive at some point in 2010 and three more at some point in 2011. They actually didn’t list a projection for Watkins, so that is 7 of 9 ready within two years.
That should be good for contributions to the big league club via promotion or trade.
Depth
is starting to develope, we’re lucky it didnt get worse. It was a big hole that we dug ourselves into with few productions after Hendry left as scouting director. Other than Theriot, Soto, Hoffpauir and Fox along with Gallagher and Wells a converted guy its been a little thin. Then we dont have one single player from the 2005 draft get to the Major Leagues and basically with busts looking like Dopirak and Harvey. Also in the last four drafts since 2006 we’ve lost four drafts, three in 2006 and one in 2007 with the Cubs only have two extra picks in Donaldson and Flaherty and Donaldson pick came without a 2nd rounder. So its good to see where the last four years might be showing.
Strange But True
I’m not saying he’s going to be a star, but Brian Dopirak still has a chance to carve out a career for himself and can’t be called a bust just yet. He’s on the Blue Jays 40-man roster and has had back-to-back solid season, albeit being old for each league. In 2008, Dopirak hit 308/382/577 in his 3rd go-around in the Florida State League before getting bumped up to AA at the end of the year. Last year Dopirak started the year at AA where he hit 308/374/576 in 366 at bats. Moved up to AAA for the first time he continued to hit, posting a 330/366/509 slash line over 218 ABs.
Dopirak could challenge Lyle Overbay and/or Randy Ruiz for a starting job with a strong spring. Did the Cubs give up one year too early?

Thanks for posting this about Dopirak. I remember seeing him in the Midwest league
a few years ago. He hit a home run that was awesome to behold, and simply looked like he was a man amongst boys in that league. He obviously fell apart after that, but it’s good to see he’s again making progress.

Probably
so. I was a little hard on Dopirak and there’s still a chance he can make it. He certainly looks like he could give Ruiz a run for his money and Overbay may not have alot time left on his Blue Jay clock. Thee irony of this is that Dopirak not known for his defensive ability is probably a better fielding 1st baseman than Ruiz. Just by process of elimination Dopirak might end up the 1st sacker for at least a little time, providing he gets out on the right foot this spring training.
sucks for Dopirak
Jays get Brett Wallace today, and probably there goes his shot at a big league job…
