I agree with him
Better to do this than to let it become a media mess next season.
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
You still have two months to figure everything out
Too early in the off season to just dump the guy

I think, until Bradley is moved, Hendry is unsure of...
…exactly how much money he has to play with when negotiating with Cameron (or Byrd or whoever).

it seems to me like
he’s short of the $6M for Cameron (roughly) unless he he can get, get about $3M back of the $21M owed to MB. otherwise it would be easy and conservative to just assume the $21M is a sunk cost and proceed with negotiations form there…
I think...
…it’s pretty clear Ricketts has set firm parameters in regards to spending (at least for 2010 and in regards to Bradley), and this is clearly something Hendry has not had to deal with for a few years.

Well, at least George left Jacque Jones out of it this time. :-)
Look, I understand why so many want Bradley released. It absolutely is the quickest solution to the problem. But I’m still not convinced that Burrell would be absolutely useless.
Pat the Bat is 33 years old. He’s already been signed once as a DH. Surely he knows – or at least suspects – that he’s heading into the twilight of his career. So who’s to say he wouldn’t embrace – or at least accept – a role as a mostly bench guy?
Soriano’s had injury problems (admitted or otherwise) every year he’s been with the Cubs, so Pat’s probably going to see some time in left field. And Derrek Lee has his bulging disk problem, so Pat could well see some time at first base, too. Otherwise, he’s a big bat off the bench. And if he excels in this role, who knows? Maybe the Cubs move him at the trade deadline. Maybe he gets a better job (or goes back to being a DH) in 2011?

This is dumb
It sounds like the Cubs, at the very least, can get Pat Burrell for a year and only lose $12 million. That’s better than just releasing MB.
That's probably the best-case scenario.
They really ought to just do it.

Sunk cost...
At some point, the Cubs organization probably needs to look at Bradley’s contract as a sunk cost. if they can’t trade him. If he performs and behaves like he did last year for the remainder of his contract, he still gets his money. At that point, has he improved the team? No.
If they outright release him, he still gets his money. Is the team better now? Unknowable at this time.
The organization has to decide if they want to gamble that Bradley is going to turn around and perform like they expected when he was signed. If they have serious doubts about his ability to turn it around, then they need to look at the contract as sunk cost for which they will not be recovering their money. They could then take the painful step of releasing him and moving forward.
"Pinky, are you pondering what I'm pondering?"--The Brain
Deal with what is instead of what you want the world to be
Cubs as an organization made a decision in a vacuum last Sept when they suspended Bradley indefinitely. It was a good decision then, Cubs team suddenly found a spark.
Sure the $$ is atrocious. Sure now another budget is affected. But reality is that until there is a taker there is no market. It might be money well spent for it will send a message throughout the entire organization and league….for as a HOF Coach once said the ultimate power you have is to determine when and IF a player can play and then where.
The How is up to them.
By not even allow him on the bus, in the locker room and still paying him you are saying that he does not belong. There are rules but put him in that category or release him and make back the minimum.
Sure it is not my money but I think fans would actually respond and continue to fill the seats on this gesture. I myself would buy MLB.com

I wish...........
Our fans and the media (although I realize not every one of them is a Cub fan) would realize that the best thing we can do is support MB if he is on the opening day roster. I don’t condone his words or actions, but right now his value is at an all time low. If we can support him at the beginning of the year, he starts off well, and he behaves, his value increase and we might be able to trade him for something worthwhile.
I realize Cubs mgmt has made some pretty strong statements about Bradley not being a Cub anymore, but we can’t just throw $21M down the drain. I hope that mgmt uses the appropriate balance of smarts and patience and waits for the right time to get rid of him.
In my opinion...
… it’s pretty clear, from MB’s actions over his nine-year major league career, that he simply is incapable of changing his behavior.
$21m is a lot of money. In this case, I believe it has to be spent, lesson learned. Get Pat Burrell in return — at least you’d be getting a player who, as recently as 2008, was a very good major league hitter.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
I think Burrell...
…could be a productive DH for a team like the White Sox and would probably excel in that ballpark as well. I know the Cubs don’t like to do the Sox any favors, but I think he could hit 25 dings if he played 120 games at DH for the Sox.
"I don't like them fellas that drive in two runs but let in three" Casey Stengel
I was thinking that, too.
Who could the Cubs get from the White Sox who could help them, and equalize the contracts?
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
Er, well, it seems like...
…if the Sox took Burrell and gave the Cubs anything of value in return, they’d be doing the Cubs a favor. But if Hendry could sell Kenny Williams on the idea that he was doing the southsiders a solid, hey, great.

I've got a (stupid) question..
As an expat who left Chicago back in ‘77, and at the time was 16, I know little about U.S. labour laws. If the Cubs don’t dump or move Milton Bradley: Would Bradley have to be used as a player? Is there legal requirement or a possible contractual obligation to put him on the roster? Or could Cubs, for example, send him to San Marino as an overpaid scout?
Well, I never heard it before, but it sounds uncommon nonsense.

They could send him home as they did last year...
… as long as they pay him.

that's what they ought to do for april
just go with a shorter roster until some other team start poorly due to lack o’ hitting and gets as desperate as the Cubs to make a deal

Just 2 choices....
I’d like to see a poll: If Bradley does not get traded, would you 1) play him or 2) release him.

Might put up a poll like that later.
In the meantime, vote in the existing poll on the right sidebar to say what you think the Cubs WILL do with him, regardless of how you feel about him.
