Well I guess we can now consider the offseason a glowing success.

honestly

i don’t know much about Mota. It’s hard to get a lot of information about DSL guys. When you analyze pitchers there, it’s always good to remember that the DSL strike zone is often considered to be wider than what it is stateside. That said, 2 things …

a) I believe he has a 92-94 mph 2-seamer with good movement, a pitch that sinks well. If that’s the case, I’m pleased with adding a hard throwing 2-seamer guy. Granted, gun accuracies, I would imagine, are an issue everywhere.

b) The one thing the Cubs do a good job at is scouting the “average” guys in Latin American talent. They believe in their ability to find cheap guys that may be just as good as some of the top talent, but perhaps needing a bit more molding. Prime example – Starlin Castro. I mean, Fleita boasts about his ability to sign cheap guys. In that respect, I’m apt to think positively about the decision.

At the end of the day, like Parisi, this likely falls under the cheap gamble category as well.

Is Mota...

… kind of like the guy the Cubs lost in the Triple-A round yesterday?

from the little i know

in terms of “potential”, that’s probably fair. Outside of that, I really can’t compare the arsenals, as I don’t know enough about Mota’s secondary offerings. Sierra has a decent live arm, but he just hadn’t harnessed it yet. Mota’s actually older than Sierra, Both guys should be in the low levels once the season starts – I’d guess XST for Mota. Sierra probably has an outside shot of starting in Low A.

Here's some interesting background via our favorite Trib genius:
@ChiTribRogers Low blow? The #WhiteSox lost RHP Arismendy Mota to Washington in the Rule 5 draft but #Nationals apparently took him to trade him to #Cubs

The perfect revenge for the Sox

would be for the Sox to pay us for Bradley, right?

One baseball game, he came to the plate and heard a woman in the crowd shout to the pitcher, "I'll make you a chocolate cake if you strike out that 'so-and-so'!" Says Strong: "I hit that ball out of the park. Then I looked at her like, 'Do I get a cake now?' "

No. This was in the AAA phase of the draft

The Cubs only have to keep him on Iowa’s roster all year. He did not even need to be added to the 40-man roster.

I didn't even know that was a stage in the Rule 5...

I'm pretty certain

although not exactly, that all the Cubs have to do is keep him in AAA camp in ST. Once the season actually starts, he can be assigned anywhere, and considering he’s coming from DSL, I would be stunned if he’s anywhere higher than Peoria.

I would think XST and then Boise.
