Sam Fuld off season update.

Sam Fuld is now back playing for  Aragua Tigres  in Venezuela. He has been there less than a week because he was  a little preoccupied with the birth of his first child a bouncing baby boy ( 8.2 pounds ) was born  on Dec 3. I rather enjoy this bit from one of the local paper's in New Hampshire where he lives.

"The Cubs reportedly are interested in trading outfielder Milton Bradley, which could increase Fuld's chances of making the team out of spring training.

"I know they've talked about moving Milton. A lot will be determined how that plays out," he said. "I'm not going to worry about anything that's out of my hands. I'll be going to spring training with a relaxed state of mind. I'm not going to play scared like everything is riding on my spring training performance."

Really the Cubs are "reportedly" interested in trading Bradley ? Those New Englanders do have a way with understatement.

I was also amused by  this article  regarding how his wife always has the upper hand in any family discussions on athletic abilities but hopefully some day he can pass her.

"Fuld might not even be the best athlete in his family. Sarah played lacrosse at Princeton and won two national championships, something Sam was never able to accomplish at Stanford.

"She'll always have that on me," he said. "She won two national championships. She always reminds me of that. When she brings it up I have nothing to say. It's like the ultimate trump card."

Unless the Cubs win their first World Series in more than a century.

"That would be nice," Fuld said."

Thanks to DS for posting this and to Al for editing it.

And if I may add a little more content via Twitter:

@cubsfarmupdates: Sam Fuld went 1-5 with a walk and 2 RBIs [Saturday] in Aragua’s 5-1 win over Margarita.

Thanks Al

As you might guess I don’t know how to do the quote highlight and whenever I put a link in the initial post is does not work. If I post a link in a comment it does work so here is a link to the earlier but more detailed article from which the second section of quotes is taken but I can’t get it to work either. HELP.

I mentioned this before but contrary to popular belief I only google stuff on Fuld every 10 days or so and had no idea
he was going to Venezuela again. Maddux of course I have daily google alerts.

I tried to explain how to do the links...

… it’s really pretty easy.

Here’s your link above in a more clickable form.

All you have to do...

… is copy the link URL you want. Then click the little icon that looks like a link above the posting box.

A window will open on top of the page. Paste the URL into the box. Click the “open in new window” check box. Then hit “submit”.

That’s it. Easy.

Cool, thanks for the update

Fuld is a favorite of mine, nice to see he’s doing well

I have not been to New Hamphire in 25 years

and I have never been to Venezuela. I do however now plan to try to catch a Tigres game on cable if one runs. Now of course if you are interested in information on one our rising stars I can keep these updates to myself. Seriously I just want Fuld to make the team out of Spring Training.

dont tell anyone this but...

I’d rather see Fuld/Reed in center, Fukedome in right where he belongs, this way we can either eat Bradley’s contract or spend money elswhere. just my HO. shhh

Dome would still need a platoon partner

But I do agree we can hopefully maximize the value of our outfield dollars if we have 5 players sharing time (playing when it suits their matchup strengths).

Well, word has it the Red Sox are homing in on Mike Cameron.

If they get him, that pretty much makes the market Marlon Byrd or maybe Rick Ankiel. Word went around Twitter the other day that Boras is reportedly asking for big money and at least three years for Ankiel – which, of course, is ridiculous. And if Byrd similarly prices himself out of the Cubs reach, we could very well see a Fuld/RJ centerfield, assuming Reed doesn’t sign with another team first.

I posted this in one of the other FPs, but I'll risk repeating myself here as well

Fuld/Johnson isn’t exactly optimal, I’ll grant you that. And I would certainly hope that Jimbo continues to beat the CF bushes, both in FA and via trade, to see what he can flush out. But I was not thrilled with Cameron at all, so I’m kinda glad he’s no longer an option.

And I definitely think we should turn turn turn a deaf ear to any Byrd overtures. Not worth the money he’s going to be looking for.

I think Fuld/Johnson along with Dome and whatever we can pick up in the non-tender/ST invite group is a pretty good fallback plan, if it comes to that.

If we are going to make any kind of splash in the FA market, I hope come January, that Mr. Valverde readjusts his market expectations a bit. I’d be willing to give him a 3 yr / $24M deal, with a team/mutual option. Then maybe use Marmol to get something else via trade or keep him in valuable setup role.

Maybe after 2010, it’d be easier to make a more definitive call if Marmol has what it takes to be solid closer. If so, then all of a sudden, Valverde becomes a valuable trading chip. A closer with 2 yrs at a reasonable cost could probably net us something pretty good.

Sam Fuld is the next coming of

Joe Girardi, aNorthwestern University grad with a BS in Industrial Engineering.

During Girardi’s second stint with the Cubs, a buddy and I would wonder “who does Girardi talk to on the Cubs bench? Who’s he having a meaningful conversation with?”

by RiskyBusiness on Dec 14, 2009 2:27 PM CST reply actions

I don't think Fuld or Girardi has any problem talking to guys on the bench

They love BASEBALL and that is I imagine a lot of what they talk about as well as family etc. I don’t think Girardi, Fuld, Brad Ausmus ( Dartmouth) Chris Young ( the pitcher also Dartmouth) have trouble fitting in. Like all players they are just big kids playing a game and it is their obsession. Players may be a bit limited in their topics but there is more than enough baseball to around.

10 Ivy League demerits for me.

I know Ron Darling went to Yale cause he pitched against Wesleyan while I was there ( not that I ever saw a sporting event in college. I think the only competitive Wesleyan had was wrestling)

There has been one major league player from Wesleyan University.

His name is Red Lanning; he pitched in six games for the 1916 Philadelphia Athletics with an 8.14 ERA.

The 1916 Philadelphia A’s were one of the worst teams in major league history; they went 36-117 and finished 54.5 games out of first place.

Wesleyan had two alumni sports figures in the more modern era

Bill Rodgers who won the Boston Marathon 4 times and Bill Belichick who it turns out got his degree in ecocomics.

Lots and lots of actors, movie directors and screenwriters as well.

But 54.5 games out, jeez. Never really thought of that. Those are videogame numbers

That's nothin'.

The 1962 Mets finished 60.5 games out of first place. They were mathematically eliminated from the pennant race on August 10, with 48 games remaining.

I'll admit

our conversation was at Wrigley was definitely influenced by Old Style.

by RiskyBusiness on Dec 14, 2009 2:51 PM CST up reply actions

I am thinking Craig Breslow might have a harder time making conversation.

The reliever now with the A’s has a degree from Yale in molecular biophysics and biochemistry. At least Fuld is probably useful to figure how to split a check and how much tip to leave with an economics degree ( and he working on the masters in statistics) . I would love to see Breslow explain his major to the rest of the team. Seriously all the players speak baseball and if that bores them they can talk about the blonde in the 2nd row.

Fuld follows into the offseason pattern of BCB

I cannot understand the obsession with 4-A ballplayers and 25th man types that happens around here. If it’s not Matt Murton then it’s Micah Hoffpauir or Mike Fontenont or Andres Blanco or now Sam Fuld.

Doug Dascenzo actually carved out a decent couple year major league career. That exceeds what Fuld has been able to do at the ripe old age of 29 by a mile. But I’m splitting hairs and allowing myself to get caught up in the exhaustive discussion of Sam Fuld. Ugh.

The Blackhawks and the Stanley Cup in 2010.

Fuld is 28

and will be for the entire 2010 season. You would want to get a fact wrong would you ?

Obviously I like Fuld a lot but in fact as a very useful bench player 24/25th man. Those guys can be very important even if they don’t get the big bucks and attention.

Fuld might just be the best for the spot!

The guy has a solid 10 outstanding catches…. i still remember seeing him go head first into the gate at Dodger stadium after catching a fly ball. He is also really patient at the plate… i’d rather see him leading off as well.
