The Yankees and
Red Sox? On ESPN? Wierd.
In all seriousness, don’t they get tired of being so preditable? Couldn’t they just pretend to be just as excited about non-NY/Boston teams?
DEJESUS!!!
I'm shocked. Shocked I say, to learn there is gambling in this establishment!
Who is doing their programming? Ken Burns?
Now only 12,859 on the "Cubs Season Tickets Waiting List"...
They deliver ratings
If a Royals-Rays game drew the numbers Yanks-Red Sox did, then you’d see Royals-Rays on TV.
There is no such thing as an ugly female breast
They deliver ratings in the Northeast.
Elsewhere, not so much.

I disagree, I say that the entire East Coast doesn't mind this
the Red Sox and Yankees are pretty popular from Florida to Massachusetts, mostly because the other teams are the Braves, Orioles, and Nationals; besides the Phillies, who have fans pretty much only around the city, the rest of the East Coast has a ton of fans for both teams
Wrigley Bound in the Summer of 2010
OK, but...
… that leaves out 3/4 of the country.

Any matchup is going to be relatively boring to 3/4 of the country
Sure, I’d love to see someone else playing in this game. But as long as this matchup gets the best ratings, I can’t blame ESPN for choosing it.
I think many casual fans will be interested in it.
Do you have facts to back up statement that it only delivers ratings in the NE? I bet that game draws better across the nation than any other game.
"Pounding sand since 1982...."
many teams draw ratings
these teams get in on name recognition alone
baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out
Exactly.
I hate when people bitch about all the Yankees-Red Sox coverage. Is it overblown? Yes, of course. But that series has more national interest than any other, so it’s logical that they would choose this game.
The Yankees are in this game...
… primarily because they are the World Series champs. Five of the last six WS champs have been in the opening ESPN game. For that, it does make sense.

And who should they play?
This is a business. They should play their biggest rival.
ESPN is not in the business of losing money on Yankees-Royals games.

Correct, they’re in the business of keeping washed up hack announcers employed
This Chicago Cubs team is currently Aaron free. Keep it that way, please.

That's another matter entirely
has nothing to do with game selection.

any chances that the cubs-white sox ones get it?
Wrigley Bound in the Summer of 2010
Probably sometime later this month or early January.
I’ll post them when I find out.

Well...
A. The Northeast is where a whole heck of a lot of people live in this country.
B. The Yankees v. Red Sox is an outstanding rivalry.
C. The Yankees and Red Sox will, once again, be solid contenders for more World Series glory in 2010.
Seems to me ESPN knows exactly what they are doing.
The Blackhawks and the Stanley Cup in 2010.
D. Jim Hendry is TERRIBLE at his job.
You left out the favorite part of your shtick.

Most of this country's population lives
east of the Mississippi.
This is just a numbers game, and the selection of this game makes sense to me. Besides, it’s primetime in that area. Again, it’s a no-brainer.

East of the Mississippi, sure.
But ESPN seems to think no one lives west of the Hudson River.

ESPN's Baseball Highlights
I have more of a problem with how ESPN devotes too much time to the Yankees and Red Sox with their highlights than I do with ESPN’s guaranteed showing of every Yankees-Red Sox Sunday game. There are a lot of teams such as the hated Cardinals last season that got short shrift from ESPN on SportsCenter. Being in Bristol, CT, does have something to do with all of the attention ESPN gives to the Yanks and Red Sox. I watch MLB Network for my highlights now because it is not uber-focused on New York and Boston.

United we stand and united we'll fall......down on our knees when we win it all!
While I am tired of the Red Sox-Yanks...
… I assume that this follows in the tradition of having the World Series winner open the season on the Sunday night before opening day. Not sure if this has happened every year in the recent history (the last 5-10 years), but it does happen quite often.
The article said...
… five of the last six years. It’s an appropriate tradition.

And I believe the exception to the tradition
was when the Red Sox were champs but opened in Tokyo, Japan.
Hey, it's a new century!
