Red Sox for Bradley?

With the BoSox signing John Lackey to a deal worth about $85 mil over 5 years, they have more than likely taken themselves out of the running for Bay or Holliday. They may be looking for a different, cheaper option for outfield production. Bradley could be an option. Now, i don't know what pieces would be exchanged, but its defiantely something thats worth looking into.

In addition to this, I am not quite understanding why the Cubs need to wait to sign a CF until they move Bradley. If the thought is they are moving Bradley to free up cap space, then how does acquiring another bad contract (Burrell, Rowand) free up any money?

There is zero chance Theo Epstein and Terry Francona are going to have interest in Milton Bradley. Even if the Cubs were on the hook for 95% of his salary.

Milton Bradley is immovable. Genius Jim is backed into a corner with no solution, or even semi-solution, at hand.

Enough with Jim Hendry! I have been an ardent supporter of him until now!

Mike Cameron appeared to be THE best option for Centerfield, now we are left with virtually nothing. We either stick with Bradley and Fukudome, which is a disaster, or sign Marlon Byrd, who isn’t that great (I saw him play in DC, and I’d say Bradley would be a better bat then him). What’s Jim Hendry’s solution? “Well we tried to trade Bradley so we couldn’t sign anyone else til we got him. At least we have Sam Fuld for CF.”

Hendry needs to make a move soon if he wants to still be employed. Seriously? Are you all satisfied with having Byrd in CF? Well maybe we could try Pie..oh wait, we traded him for virtually Aaron Heilman last off season. That looks like a great trade as well! Meh..

tbh

I’ve said all offseason that, while I didn’t expect it, that I thought Sam Fuld in CF and Jeff Baker as the starting 2nd baseman might be better than any combination we could get for those two spots, when all factors are considered (cost, fit, ability, need).

That said, I think Hendry will make a move. It’ll probably be something a bit rash – perhaps a trade for Melky Cabrera (I seriously don’t want that) or Brett Gardner (I don’t want it, … but not at the level of my distaste for a Melky trade and for some different reasons).

by toonsterwu on Dec 14, 2009 8:32 PM CST up reply actions

I know you've mentioned this before, but I just don't remember the details.

Why not Gardner? His defensive numbers are great, he’s young, and he’s shown signs that he is coming around against left handed pitching.

by Pat19 on Dec 14, 2009 11:10 PM CST up reply actions

My issue

has little to do with Gardner’s ability. Simply put, I believe Fuld to be a similar type talent. He doesn’t have Gardner’s speed anymore (after the injury), but he has a better arm, more than enough range for center, and I believe, having seen both, that Fuld has a bit more pop in him (granted, it’s not much … but I view Gardner as a slap the ball, move it around guy). Fuld’s shown he can hit from both sides as well (granted, it’s a very odd splits history).

Short of it is, I would hate to give up assets for Gardner when I believe the only difference between the two is that one has had the opportunity to play … and the other hasn’t. That said, I wouldn’t hate the move. Gardner’s skills fits a need for the team at the top of the lineup.

You've really been unmasked these past few days.

You hated the idea of signing Cameron. So to come on now and go on and on about how the Cubs are worse than ever shows what you’re all about. You aren’t interested in talking about the Cubs. All you want is to spin every event into people here being angry at Jim Hendry. It’s a sad game you’re playing, but at least now everyone knows what you’re about.

Hopefully someday soon you’ll give up the game and go back to talking about the Cubs.

Bradley's Going Nowhere

The message has been sent to both Jim Hendry and Milton Bradley – nobody wants MB. Nobody thinks he is worth the trouble. The Cubs are stuck with him.

Really, the only hope is that Bradley takes this as a challenge and brings his A game come spring training. No, I don’t think there is any chance of happening, either.

I’m not trying to jump down your throat, but you have been wrong at every turn on this Milton Bradley thing. You fell hook line and sinker for the ridiculous suggestion that multiple teams had interest in Bradley. And of late you seem to think the market will open up for Bradley.

I don’t get it. Surely even you understand that the options are extremely non-existent at this stage. Cubs either eat the contract or the reconcile with Bradley. A third option I guess would be to bury him on the IR for two seasons, but I’m guessin’ the players’ union wouldn’t like that terribly much.

curious

at this time last year, with the big four still out there (Dunn, Bradley, Ibanez, and Abreu), was Abreu at the top of your list? If so, kudos to you for your “they still got it” recognition skills.

I had them ranked as I do above – Abreu was last on my list. And all talent aside, the Angels lucked into the $5M contract. There’s no way to predict/expect that was going to happen at the start of the offseason for any of them.

Better at what exactly?

Matsui didn’t play a single game in the outfield in 2009.

He only played 24 games in 2008.

He hasn’t played center field since 2005.

Even when he could play in the outfield consistently, he was a terrible defender – he has a career UZR/150 of -14.4 in left field, and -30.5 in center field.

by Wreckard on Dec 15, 2009 11:40 AM CST up reply actions

Actually,

…Which, I still think he could have been a better choice than MB. A lot of people only expected MB to play around 120 games last year in the OF….anything more was to be icing on the cake. HM prolly could have done that this year… at a cheaper price, and for only a 1 year deal.

So… I would rather have had HM this season, than this MB fellow that is looks like we will be stuck with…

Either way, doesn’t matter. HM has signed with another team.

Despite the fact the Matsui has never played right field in his career, hasn’t played any defensive position in 2 years, and when he lasted played defense and was 3 years younger and terrible at it, you still would have signed him for millions of dollars to go out there an man the hardest right field and baseball.

If the Cubs are stuck with Bradley

………this season is done. There’s no way to spin this to a roster full of players that can’t stand the guy.

It’s not inconceivable to think if the season goes south early that Ricketts launches Hendry around Memorial Day and the Cubs put Lee, Lilly, and Ram on the trading block. All three would net a nice return of prospects to build around down the line. Personally, I think that’s a better alternative than Jim Hendry trying to patch the holes he’s created for the team year after year.

Also, Mike Cameron’s not here because he got 2 years………..I would have liked to see him in CF for ONE year…………not 2. Get ready for Mr. Ankiel

by plenz on Dec 15, 2009 9:56 AM CST reply actions

Sure there is, if they have strong enough personalities...

The Cubs team is made up of 25 men, at least one of whom is a total malcontent. The question is, can the other 24 reign in the one, and if not, can they get along without him or despite him.

Bradley is just the latest in a long line of pricks in baseball, and teams have won despite them in the past.

Honestly, my bigger concern is the media, and I say that as a guy who has written a lot of articles and done a lot of interviews over the years. Controversy sells papers, and the beat writers know exactly where to go to get controversy. Even if life around the Cubs clubhouse is filled with flowers, birds and little puppies, somebody will ask a question designed to light the fuse on Mt. Bradley.

All that said, this is the Cubs last or next to last chance with this group of players. If they pull another swan dive like last season, I fully expect to see some of our “favorites” moved for “prospects”.

I think I speak for everyone here when I say, "Wait, what the hell are you talking about?"

by Ross on Dec 15, 2009 10:08 AM CST up reply actions

ok

so there’s no way to spin this to the media. Either way, bringing MB back is a disaster. I think the best idea is MB for Burrell and then flipping him to the Mets for Castillo. Obviously if the Mets sign Bay that scenario is out the window and the likelihood of Bradley here in 2010 grows. A potential lineup?

Castillo 2B
Theriot SS…..ughhhhhhhhhhh
Lee 1B
Ramirez 3B
Ankiel CF
Hack LF
Soto C
Fukudome RF

IMO this is not an unlikely scenario. Not ideal but better than having Sam Fuld and Mike Fontenot in the lineup everyday

by plenz on Dec 15, 2009 10:26 AM CST up reply actions

I think there is a way to spin it to the media.

You just say – “We’re not commenting because we’re not paying attention to him.” Let Bradley do and say what he wants and never comment on it. Eventually he’ll either tire out or cross a line that lets the Cubs off the hook for the rest of the contract. Or, better, yet – he’ll actually make moves to reconcile with the team…

I agree... because it is the only chance

The Cubs are not going to eat 21 million dollars. They just aren’t. And if nobody else wants MB, then there is little choice of what happens.

Dempster has gone on record saying he, among others, are cool with MB coming back. So, that doesn’t seem like a problem. They know that the man can hit and if he is on, he would be a valuable piece to have.

MB has been curiously quiet during this whole thing, and I for one think that is a good sign. There is maybe just the slightest chance that he might figure out that he is at a major crossroads in his baseball career. He has his money, sure, but there is much to be said for pride as well.

How about you reading this from the Tribune

What else do you need? Piniella called him a piece of (crap). That is well documented.

I’m sure Bradley cares about something, but what that is is beyond my comprehension. It’s certainly not about being the best teammate he can be and doing everything he can to make sure the Chicago Cubs win as many ballgames as they can. That has been well demonstrated and documented during ’09.

That’s your argument? Did you happen to notice that you have no support either before you wrote? Not that it means anything. I’m just saying that it seems awfully silly for you to take that position and have no support yourself.

I’m not saying that Bradley hasn’t shown energy out on the field, but that doens’t mean he cares whether the team wins or loses. The guy quit on the team and that is well documented. It is obvious that his energies are not directed towards the team winning at all costs.

The argument has been made here, on multiple occasions, that maybe MB cares a little TOO much. He didn’t quit on the team, he was sent home… for reasons that had nothing to do with effort or not caring. Your assertions are laughable.

by AndrewJStone on Dec 16, 2009 12:27 PM CST up reply actions

Seriously

How exactly does his caring too much for the team translate to him refusing to pinch hit? How do those two things square? Perhpas you are misreading what I am saying.

I did write earlier that he “doesn’t give a crap”, yet what I really meant was that whether the Cubs win or not is not necessarily what his prime focus is. I see that Bradley goes out there and hustles and takes calls and outs harshly. However, I don’t know that that is necessarily in order to help the Cubs win or if it’s some other factor. In addition to those things, I see selfish behaviour on par with nothing that I have ever seen a professional sports player do. There are so many of those behaviours exhibited that I have to wonder what his ultimate motivations are. He is a smart guy and I can’t see that he could view his own actions as being compatible with that. It makes no sense unless he has differnt motivations.

You asked me to cite information and I did that for you. There are many, many more exhibits I could provide as well. I would really appreciate you telling me how his appaling behaviors this year were condusive to a “win at all costs” mentality. At a minimum, how did refusing to pinch hit help the team?

I have no idea what you are trying to say with your first paragraph. How can my defense be both popular yet no one wants to support it? Can you show me some evidense of how many people have read it? I suspect at this point you and I may be the only ones going back to this thread. My guess is that people just don’t care to write anything more than they don’t feel one way or the other. In any event, it is a ludicrous point to suggest that some non-resoponses to an internet thread are somehow indicative of anything.

Cubs By The Numbers

Cubs By The Numbers is a history of the ballclub by uniform number, but the biographies help trace the history of our beloved team in a new way.
