Wow...Not a good trade IMO

He still has quite a few $$$ remaining on his contract. They should have just resigned Pods to a two year deal for 12 mill (although the Dodgers took out 9 mill, but that still is a lot of $$$ for a mediocre leadoff hitter)

by Geo4MVP on Dec 15, 2009 10:04 AM CST reply actions

He's mediocre...

But Podsednik is just bad. So you get him cheaper than Pods (under your proposal) and you get a better player, I don’t think it’s that bad a deal for them.

Someday we'll go all the way...

Meh...

Two years of Juan Pierre at $9 million? I don’t hate it. Funny though that teams around baseball seem to be eating at least half on these contracts to make their problems go away, yet the Cubs think they can keep their money for someone who’s an even bigger problem.

They're doing what the always do...

Bargain shop, hoping to catch lightning in a bottle. Pierre is completely consistent with their philosophy though; good OBP at the top of the lineup, with superior speed. They don’t care if he won’t slug his weight, and after watching Swisher out there recently, Juan will look like an upgrade defensively.

I don’t hate it, and I still like him better than Wise or Podsednik.

by Damen Jackson on Dec 15, 2009 10:26 AM CST up reply actions

Agreed, this deal makes sense if they didn't shoot the moon

through waivers and get stuck with Rios. Whatever value Rios has is as a CF. This team now has Andruw Jones, Pierre, Rios, and Kotsay? Coupled with Quentin’s health/production, what is KW trying to put together down there?

I’m guessing KW hopes Jones looks conscious to develop some value as a trade chip down the line.

by RMRZisMYmanCRUSH on Dec 15, 2009 10:37 AM CST up reply actions

I believe it's $9 for both years

as the Dodgers are paying half of Pierre’s salary.

I’m guessing Pierre will lead off for the Sox which will be interesting. I don’t think he’s ever played in the AL so there will be an adjustment. Juan didn’t seem to adjust very quickly after being traded the first time to a Chicago team so we’ll see. I’m not quite sure how Juan will react to Ozzie’s rants, that should be interesting.

Who knows if this will work out. I thought the Sox were crazy to trade Carlos Lee for Scotty Pods and look how that turned out.

Hey, it's a new century!

I really think they'll be happier than you imagine..

Guillen really does appear to like a more diverse offense that what the Butt Brothers were giving him. With Pierre and some of the younger guys stealing bases, going first to third, and creating a little more tension for opposing pitchers, this could be okay for them.

by Damen Jackson on Dec 15, 2009 10:40 AM CST up reply actions

The White Sox acquired Juan Pierre from the Dodgers for two minor league pitchers, according to Yahoo’s Tim Brown (and confirmed by Ken Rosenthal). The Dodgers will take on roughly half of Pierre’s salary. The outfielder has $18.5MM remaining on his deal ($10MM next year and $8.5MM in 2011), so the Dodgers are taking on about $9MM.

Pierre, 32, hit .308/.365/.392 in 425 plate appearances for the Dodgers last year. He stole 30 bases and played well in the outfield, according to UZR (though we don’t want to draw sweeping conclusions from 750 innings of work).

The White Sox had shown interest in Scott Podsednik and Brett Gardner, but they appear set with their new addition. If Pierre performs close to last year’s levels, the White Sox will have themselves a bargain (depending on the pitchers they give up).

The Cubs can’t take on Pierre’s salary unless they are able to unload an equivalent salary on the Dodgers. And the Dodgers already know how insane [name redacted] is, having seen his act up close before.

Decent trade

I mean, they aren’t paying much for him, and he can probably still be average defensively, so you hope for a lucky year offensively. That said, they did give up two useful upper level arms to land him, two guys that should see time in the majors in some role.

Good trade for the Sox

Juan Pierre for $9 million spread over two years is a bargain. He gives them the speed and the leadoff hitter they covet and enables them to move Carlos Quentin to right field where he is ideally suited.

Kenny Williams runs circles around Jim Hendry with much less financial resources. That rotation and bullpen they have are going to take them places.

You know,

The Sox have some very promising positional talent, and decent starting pitching. In that division, if Williams can cobble some relief help together, they’ll be contending by August.

I do really like Beckham and Ramirez

Getz could be good but wasn’t impressive last year. Rios and Pierre are bad, Jones is bad, Vizquel is old, Pierzynski is getting old. Overall, don’t like that offense.

Pitching, they could have a great rotation, one of the best in baseball. That bullpen is shakey though adding Putz is a step in the right direction.

The Sox offense could be really bad next year with Pierre, Teahen, Jones, and Rios, but their rotation is dynamite if Peavy is completely healthy, and in their division that might be enough.

The Sox rotation, IMHO, is the best in baseball.

Their lineup is shaky at best.

I do like their chances in that division. Cleveland and Detroit are selling off assets. Kansas City is Kansas City. The Twins are moving outside. I have a feeling that they will be a different team outdoors. They were 49-32 in the dome last year.

It is sad to say but (I know it is still very early……) I like their chances better than ours in 2010.

but BLou was talking about how stupid Cubs fans are for believing Mike Cameron would be a good edition to the Cubs. Then, when he signed with the Red Sox, he went on and on about how this proves Theo Epstein is the best general manager in baseball.

So, basically the moral of the story, bash Cubs fans or Hendry every chance it gets even if it contradicts many, many former statements made. That’s BLou’s M.O.

but, getting back to baseball……

All the Sox need Rios to do...

…is to be a fine defensive centerfielder and give them 20 HRs and 70 RBIs in the lower third of the batting order. If Rios can do that, then the Sox will be happy. And the talent is definitely there for him to do much more. But he seems to be enigmatic.

You get what you pay for.

The Sox will be paying 9 million over 2 years. And they will be getting a guy that is worth about that much. I think they will be disenchanted with him the more they see him. If you look at the 4 years before last years partial season, you see a guy that is a .330 OBP guy, who gets caught stealing close to 30% of the time. Their pitching, if healthy, will be good. They seem to be buying into the bs of 2005. Some still say they won with speed and pitching. I say they won with home runs, defense and pitching. I see a team that will score less runs and has not improved their defense.
