When

your team missed the playoffs, has a lame duck manager, has no payroll flexibility, no tradeable contracts, and has yet to make any improvements, I’d say it’s been a bad off-season.

DEJESUS!!!

Yep

The Cubs are conceding the 2010 season before it starts. The only thing to do is let some of these God-awful contracts unwind and pray like hell that the minor league system can finally produce a reliable pipeline of talent.

God save the queen if Starlin Castro sucks and Josh Vitters is yet another in a long line of can’t miss flameouts.

in order for our farm system to pan out

we need a General Manager, and scouting department who can actually tell their heads from their collective asses. So we still have some changes to make

That's probably coming...

….after 2010, so be patient.

I disagree...

…there is enough talent on the roster to win their division, but they will need several things to go right and have virtually nothing go wrong.

Will that happen, I ain’t banking on it, but Ricketts is being very methodical in his approach here. I will add, I don’t quite get the hesitancy to unload Bradley, because I don’t see that situation getting any better for them down the road.

It should be a doozy of a summer at Wrigley

Everybody waiting for Jim Hendry and Lou Piniella to go while this team fights to get to .500. Which as currently structured will be a tough challenge.

The Ricketts family has disappointed me out of the box. They had two years to examine and vet the baseball operation. From day one they should have hired a capable and top flight baseball man to run the operation. Keeping Kenny Crane is deeply disturbing.

Crane Kenney isn't running the baseball operation.

I would love to know...

…about the animated discussion he had (that was reported in the paper) with Jim Hendry and Randy Bush at the winter meetings.

I would hope that Ricketts is smarter than that, and it rarely works out when organizations have non-baseball people running the organization. I think this is one of the problems with the Bears as well, everything trickles down from the top.

I was banking on immediate change...

…as well, but after some thought, I am understanding what his thinking may be to be patient.

Also, it could be Rickett’s had someone in mind to run the baseball operation, but the timing didn’t workout for him to come in right away.

It may be a bad offseason...

But not really surprising at all; a majority of us knew that it would come down to this. The money has run out, the talent has declined, and we haven’t done anything to make our team better. Our window was ‘07-09’.

Someday we'll go all the way...

by CubsBullsBears on Dec 15, 2009 6:55 PM CST up reply actions

You could be right...

…and I have mentioned that same window on this board many times. To win in 2010, they will have to have some stars align, but it is possible.

It looks like Ricketts wants to thoroughly examin what he has before he starts throwing money at players, and he is willing to risk 2010 being another missed playoff year to gather the knowledge he is seeking. Also, the 140-145 mil the payroll is going to be this year, may just be the limit he will ever spend on players until new revenue streams start pouring in.

Bottom line, if you can’t build a consistant winner with the 3rd highest payroll in baseball, your problem is not from a lack of spending on players.

well, either way, we're in the exact same boat as the Mets

Neither team has done anything

by Nunyabidness on Dec 15, 2009 7:34 PM CST up reply actions

The Mets are actually under a lot more pressure than the Cubs

Their entire rotation after Santana is suspect as is their bullpen and many of their positon spots. They have to compete for fans with the reigning World Champions and so far their off season consists of signing TWO aging back up catchers. A much worse off season ( so far) than the Cubs.

Again, I can't take solace in the woes of other teams

I can only worry about the deeply disturbing condition of the Cubs.

I realize you can only enjoy it when the Cubs are really bad

but me I enjoy it when the Mets are really bad. Kind of why I am a Cub fan.

The Mets are supposedly going to get Jason Bay

so no, we’re still having a worse offseason

My boss is a Mets fan

We laugh at our teams. The highlights of the Mets offseason is signing Chris Coste, Henry Blanco and Elmer Dessens while the Cubs try to give Bradley to anyone who will take him.

by rlpete on Dec 15, 2009 8:24 PM CST reply actions

The perfect solution is for the Mets to take Bradley

Than each team will have made a major move.
