Cubs Among Teams Watching Aroldis Chapman Throw
About half the teams sent representatives to watch Chapman throw at the USA Baseball complex in Houston.
So what say you? Should the Cubs sign him?

Sure, why not
I was upset to see them not scouting him to begin with, but I like the idea of signing him
Wrigley Bound in the Summer of 2010
I don't think...
…they have the dough to sign this guy.

Why bother scouting him at all, then?

Very simple...
…so they don’t look foolish not having a presense when so many other teams are there.

To throw Marlon Byrd off the scent
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
Ricketts may give Hendry clearance for this signing
in place of signings that help the 2010 club if he believes we’re far out of it and/or he just wants to invest more heavily in prospects. In a year when the Cubs will not have a flashy off-season for the ML club, Chapman is the kind of statement purchase I could see Ricketts wanting to make. Isn’t Chapman the only purchase nearly everyone on this board would cheer for?
"We’re going to come back here next year healthy and do what we’re supposed to do, and we’re going to be all right. That’s not Hendry’s fault. He thought it was the right move. It didn’t work out. But at the same time, he’s the same guy that put back-to-back championship teams together." - Aramis Ramirez
That would jive...
…with what he stated was important in his opening press conference, and I guess we’ll see if they are in the bidding.

I'm not expecting a signing
but I don’t think following Chapman is just for show.

I am......
not against it if the price is right.
With all of the bad contracts on this team we have to be very careful moving forward.
In the past, there seemed to be a bidding war on players with his talent. I don’t see the Cubs getting involved in that.

Cubs have a snowball's chance in hell of being a serious bidder
The opinion is out there that the bidding for Chapman will start at $30 million….and that comes BEFORE signing him to a contract.
This will be a bidding reserved for the Yankees, Red Sox and Angels. Maybe the Mariners, maybe the Orioles. Cubs? Never going to happen.
The Blackhawks and the Stanley Cup in 2010.
I don't think.....
you are correct.

You are not paying a transfer fee to another team.

Actually,
I heard that there has only been one offer so far…and it was for $15 million.

BLou....
You make us all embarrassed to be Cubs fans. You make me hate talking about this stuff. You probably sit at your desk at home and in your office at Wal-mart and beat yourself off to your own negative comments. In fact, i’m sure you will get a hard-on reading this. You feed off this stuff, and its sad, because unlike you…all of us are all REAL Cubs fans. Your attitude is more suited for soccer, so go move to Europe and never come back. Also, it is painfully obvious that you lack real knowledge of baseball.

Not that I'm defending him or anything but..
Your wrong with this statement…
Also, it is painfully obvious that you lack real knowledge of baseball.
Is he Captain Negative? Yes he is but he’s no dummy by any means. I get embarrasses by fans who refuse to look past their allegiance to their respective team to see the truth of the matter. Wearing blinders and being positive gets old when it’s clear your team is a joke!
I would sleep with Blou if it meant the Cubs would win a WS. by Doggie Stalker on Aug 22, 2009 4:11 PM EDT
It works both ways.
People can be blinded by disappointment as much as hope. And to call a team that had a winning record with an offense that was always half-injured a “joke” is as blind as anything I’ve read recently.

international free agents
always seem to find a way to not live up to the hype (except for that ichiro guy)
pass
Say no to Marlon Byrd, Scotty Pods, and Rick Ankiel.
I think we should at least offer something.
I think he is the real deal.
You can NEVER have enough starting pitching. If he does pan out — could you imagine our rotation the next couple of years?
2010 is OUR year.

+1 for the post
+1 more for your sig line.

Yes.
Considering other team priorities, it doesn’t seem likely that the Cubs can make a serious run at him, especially since the Angels now have some money to burn, having missed out on Lackey/Halladay/etc. But young power lefties don’t grow on trees. I’d like to add him if it were feasible. If they were at the throwing session, I take it they’re considering it..
I think watch is the key word
Watch without a check book. Cubs are tight right now. This was a red carpet sighting.
