Disagree.
Yes, Silva has been horrific the last couple of years. But maybe there’s an injury or mechanical problem that can be fixed. At least you’d be getting someone you could actually use, unlike Burrell, and not simply tossing away the $12 million for 2011.
It’s hardly an ideal scenario, but this whole thing isn’t an ideal scenario.

I disagree 100%
At least with Burrell you’re getting some value in return. Burrell still projects to be decent this year – Bill James has him OPSing .795 and hitting 17 home runs. So you’ll get a year out of him worth $4-5M dollars, even if you just use him to platoon in right and as a bench bat / backup first baseman.
Silva meanwhile would only get a minor league deal if he was a free agent this year. Even his good years don’t look that good when you take fielding into account. Burrell will likely be worth more in 2010 than Silva will in 2010 and 2011 combined.
+1, if silva performs the way he has the last two years
there is no way any team can keep him on their major league roster.

Actually,
Silva is just not a very good player. But he is one of the luckiest players of his era, hitting free agency at its peak, when 5th starters were grabbing $8 million a year.
I see a little further down that the deal is reportedly done. Sadly, this is exactly what I was speaking of earlier in another post. All this posturing by the Cubs, and they come back with Carlos Silva? They should have done this six weeks ago, and moved on.

What about Gary Matthews Jr.
I know his number are horrible but the salaries match up..he.’s owed $23 million over the next two years. I just the hiccup would be the Angels are a smart franchise and want nothing to do with Milton. Maybe if we kick in enough money we could make it worth it to them.

GMJ is terrible
We might as well release Bradley than pay the Angels extra money for their trash AND waste a roster spot.

I’d rather have Silva than Matthews.

and only let him out of the pen when you have a five run lead in the ninth

So you would rather have a disgruntled MB causing disruption in the clubhouse?
Yes it is a heck of a lot of money, but nobody wants MB anymore, so it was one of the few moves available. I’m betting MB thrives in the lowkey northwest. It’s pretty much the last place he can go.
I think I speak for everyone here when I say, "Wait, what the hell are you talking about?"
as much as i dislike MB and his signing
keeping him is a better than carlos freaking silva

Absolutely
At least a disgruntled Milton Bradley can play baseball.
Carlos Silva might ride into the clubhouse on a unicorn and vomit rainbows when he talks but he still sucks at baseball.
So, Bradley improving on his abysmal numbers from last year
was a given, but Silva returning to his Minnesota numbers, that’s not a possibility?

It's a different level of suck
Bradley was at least serviceable. Silva is…well, think Aaron Miles, but at 6 times the salary and double the suckage.

Even when he was in Minnesota...
He wasn’t tremendously consistent. He had a good year in 2005 and an okay year in 2007, but he was pretty bad in both 2004 and 2006. He may have won 14 games in 2004, but he did it while giving up 255 hits in 203 innings. And then came the abominable years in Seattle.

What do you mean...
What happened to him? Nothing happened. Carlos Silva has always been one of the most hittable pitchers in baseball. His fastball is pedestrian, and his secondary stuff is marginal. I think he may have had a bit better defense in Minnesota for awhile, which helped. But he turned a nice contract year into a mega payday, and turned back into Carlos %$%# Silva.
Injuries aside from last season, what you see is exactly what you get with him, and what you get is not much. Frankly, the Cubs would have likely done better releasing Bradley, and keeping that spot open for someone like a Parker or Berg to make the club.

It seems unlikely.
Even his good years in Minnesota weren’t that good; he was helped massively by good fielding, a friendly park, and a little bit of old-fashioned luck.
His bad 2008 is actually pretty in-line with his career numbers, peripheral-wise.
A friendly park?
Since when is the Metrodome a pitcher’s park?

What I meant...
Was that if the Cubs actually do trade for Silva, I hope they do something more than just use him as a mop-up guy, if there’s any way possible to do something like that. And maybe there isn’t, because Silva has trally been horrendous for quite some time.

Yes
Maybe Bradley would regain enough value that Hendry could trade him after 2-3 months.
I wonder if Silva can even outpitch the AAA crowd at spring training.

Oh,
I’m very confident that he’ll put up real nice numbers, in that environment, and getting back to a lot of DH. The funny part though is I wouldn’t be shocked if the Mariners beefed up his value, and moved him at the deadline.
This is practically stealing for the Mariners.
by Damen Jackson on Dec 18, 2009 12:01 PM CST up reply actions
The money is a sunk cost....
Silva in long relief is actually more than what they could have expected from Bradley this season, so it’s a plus in that regard. And when you couple it with the fact that it doesn’t make the Ricketts come out of pocket with cash, I’m sure the Cubs don’t hate it, even if the fans do.
by Damen Jackson on Dec 18, 2009 11:58 AM CST up reply actions
Releasing Bradley would have saved us $1m on what he was owed
(because someone would have picked him up for the league minimum)
We could get a mop-up pitcher for that same amount of money.
Let's get it done
I thintk here is somethign that cna be worked with in regards to Silva. He’s had 3 acceptable years and three bad ones. I’ll tke the risk at this point.

no longer has the ability to pitch i the major leagues in the major leagues. We are talking about someone with back to back ERAs over 6. Its certainly possible if we acquired him that we end up having to release him and pay the remainder of his contract.

The Upshot of Silva...
If the Cubs get him, and he gets hurt, doesn’t insurance pay for a significant portion of the contract? If this is the case, I could see the Cubs “Chad Fox”-ing him and hoping he goes on the shelf.

FTA
The money remaining on both contracts is similar. Bradley has $21 million left on his contract — $9 million in 2010, $12 million in 2011. Silva has $25 million remaining — $11.5 million in ’10 and ’11, with a $2 million buyout on a 2012 option. There is no immediate word if the Cubs will send money in the deal to make up any of the $4 million difference.
Why in the hell would the Cubs send money to the Mariners!?

yuck
I really hope that the Mariners end up sending us some money. If it’s the other way around, I would have preferred Burrell.
I think I might prefer to keep Milton than getting Carlos freaking Silva.
if the Cubs get Silva
who is owed more than MB AND have to send money, then Hendry should not only be fired immediately, he should be in protective custody because he won’t be safe in Chicago
I'm praying
… that this turns out to be wrong. And people were complaining that we might get Luis Castillo in return for Milton …
this is what its come down to
there wasn’t a single trade out there that could be made to improve our club
so instead of taking other pieces that didn’t fit and didn’t have a chance to fit, the Cubs decided to take a chance on a back-end starter which is an area of need (depth in SP)
On paper we got far worse today, but that should have been the expectation going in given the contract, the situation, etc
by DartmouthCubsFan on Dec 18, 2009 11:45 AM CST reply actions
Nobody is going to be completely happy with this...
Regardless of what happens, nobody is going to be pleased.
The Cubs were limited in their trading options.
Pat Burrell would have been another virtually untradable contract that the Cubs would have to try to flip. He would be a guy without a position in Chicago, a really expensive Phil Nevin minus the ability to catch.
Regardless, if this trade gets made, we can move on from the MB era in Chicago and officially annoint Carlos Silva as the most-hated Cub.
I think I speak for everyone here when I say, "Wait, what the hell are you talking about?"
