Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Snoozing

ok so i just saw that Capps is goinfg to the Nationals. Are the Cubs going to make any deals this off season to make the dang team better. Is it me or do I not see any production from front office in attempting anything.

do they really think that they are going to get anywhere with our current bunch of giveruppers. We need to get another hot bat or a middle relief. I am still not convinced that Marmol is going to get the job done but i sincerely hope so.

I understand that getting rid of Bradley was priority but I mean come on.  We missed out on a good number of free agents that we could have worked with. There would have been nothing wrong with moving players around in the field.

Coco Crisp was missed.....We could have even reaquired Pierre. Why not go after Jason Bay or Matt Holiday.

I heard a reporter say that the Cubs have gone after the big names in the past and recently. Well we should continue that trend and try and get one of these big shots left since we have already missed out on quite a few.

I know im dreaming to get the Bay or Holiday but it is the Holidays.......

Hey Hendry.....Wake up dude.

I'm a little foggy on cold medicine right now.

It’s a little disorienting, but it sure helps. Maybe I’ll feel well enough to make something for lunch pretty soon.

On second thought, maybe I’ll just read a book by the fireplace. Yeah, that’s probably more likely. SpikeHD is running the original Star Wars trilogy right now, I guess that looks pretty good, too. Oh wait, Coachella Music Festival highlights on Palladia! Oh damn, Fischerspooner? Back to Star Wars then…

In today's paper

Beane is quoted as saying he likes the four OFs he has in house right now. Crisp will play CF, Sweeney in RF, Davis in LF, with Hairston backing them up. He sees Crisp and Davis at the top of the order, so it looks like Beane is not looking to deal Davis anytime soon as some here speculated he might after getting Crisp. .

You don't think Jason Bay could nelp this team?

I mean he is no MB but come on.

Stick him in RF and move Dome to CF. He has got to be a better fielder than Soriano, I might be…

But they don’t have the money for him. We will be stuck with crap like Marlon Byrd.

You think Sori is a good LF?

We need some offense on this team. How much good pitching must continue to go to waste. Bay is a better OF than Soriano-leave Bay in LF then. Soriano can go to right….That’s right he can’t handle it.

Bay has been pretty clutch, besides ARam we don’t have much of that.

I would deal with the defense to get him.

What is your solution? Marlon Byrd?

He never said or even implied Soriano is a good LF, but he did imply (correctly) that Bay would be a bad RF. He’s a bad LF so it is logical to assume he would be worse in RF. An outfield with Soriano and Bay in the corners is a defensive nightmare. Is the picture getting any clearer for you now?

We have gone after the big names recently.....

and look how thats worked out…….we are strangling ourselves with all those big, long, backloaded deals. I wouldn’t be surprised if Ricketts quietly is going to reject the option of giving out long or big contracts right now and wait a few years until some of these backloaded deals come of the books to give the team financial flexibility to build a team the way ricketts wants to do it.

by cubsmania on Dec 24, 2009 1:54 PM CST reply actions

Big Names have gone after the Cubs

More than a couple of players have indicated they wanted to play for the Cubs – Ivan Rodriguez, Thome. I think that’s because they knew the Cubs would pay top dollar, or over market prices. Plus handing out longer deals than other teams didn’t make the Cubs an unattractive employer either.

if it gets down to the $8M range...

I expect the Cubs to shift gears and become very interested. I still think they’d like to make some sort of big-name FA signing (ideally before the Cubs Convention), if nothing else then to help wash away any leftover Bradley residue still hanging around.

Of course you don’t sign FA’s just to make a splash – or at least you shouldn’t. But if it can help your team AND happens to be a big splash, so much the better. Obviously Bay or Holliday would be big splashes but besides being out of our price range, corner OF isn’t an area where we have a lot of flexibility.

Valverde or Tejada would fit the bill – IF the price is right. The other possibility might be a long shot, but we’re rumored to be a darkhorse candidate in the Aroldis Chapman sweepstakes. I’d be very very happy if that happened.

Well, one thing is for sure.

The longer teams in general — not just the Cubs — wait to sign free agents, the bigger the chance that asking prices go down, not just for DeRosa but for all free agents.

Just as last year, Jim Hendry could have gotten a better RF cheaper by waiting, the same thing may be true this year in finding a CF.

But is there a FA CF out there that's the equivalent of an Abreu?

As far as I’m concerned, Cameron was that guy – and obviously waiting out the market didn’t work there.

Now, the only FA CFs left are guys like Byrd, Ankiel, Pods, and Winn. If Hendry signs one of them for an Abreu-like $5M, somehow I don’t think we’ll be saying “man, what a bargain that was” at the end of 2010 – it’d be more like fair meh-ket value. I think the price would have to be around $2M to qualify as a bargain.

Al I think we missed out on Cameron. Byrd is just not the same caliber and away from Arlington he will struggle. I don’t like this. I think you have to look into trade options

I think the trade options were always better this year, anyway.

Cameron was a good fielder, but a high-K, low-BA, hitter who is getting old. Byrd has had a couple of good seasons, but has the kind of track record that implies FA disappointment, and is also not that young. Podsednik’s record just screams, “Run away!”

Granderson was the best CF acquisition so far this offseason and Cabrera may be the second. There may be other decent trade options out there.

by ClarkFan on Dec 29, 2009 8:20 PM CST up reply actions

I'd suggest looking beyond batting average.

Mike Cameron is an amazingly consistent offensive player who’s apparently been able to hang on to his defensive prowess in centerfield despite his age. I agree that Granderson was the best CF available, but I’d put Cameron at No. 2 without hesitation.
