It says the Cubs are talking with him as well, but do we wait too long to make the decision to re-sign him (or not)?

A Healthy Johnson

Is a good, useful Johnson. Really, I think it depends who else they get. If it’s Ankiel to play CF, then Reed can platoon with him. If it’s Byrd, then we go Johnson-less :(

Scott Bora$ is satan.

it was a TWSS deluxe

In that case

I hope we sign the scrappy Johnson. Marlon Byrd? No thanks! I’m not crazy about Ankiel, especially since Boras is his agent, but I like him more than Byrd.

I would much rather have Johnson than Byrd.

Byrd is a waste of money in my opinion.

We will probably see him soon in a Cub uniform, though.

Lets sign Johnson

to a one year contract .Johnson would be cheaper than Byrd . I see no great difference in Byrd over Johnson except about 6 or 7 million more dollars . Lets just wait till trading deadline and see if the Cubs have a shot at contending .. Platoon Fuld / johnson for now and save some money for the time being .. Byrd is not worth the big bucks

Thirded.

I’m going to make a longer post on this topic soon.

Sigh....the platoon is Fukudome/Johnson

Fukudome was putting up some evil splits against LHP in 2009. But the Cubs need a real CF. Myabe Fuld can be part of the answer in CF, but given his fielding history there Johnson isn’t.

You're not asking Johnson to play every day.

yet

if an injury happens, then we might be

Nope - that is something he hasn't done since 2006

I also don’t think he is a unique talent – a reasonably good 33 year old corner OF who hits right handed and has a chronic back condition. I think he would have a role on the 2010 Cubs, but if the Yankees want to pay him $5M, that would make Byrd a bargain, with a lower cost player with risk like Church for the RH half of a platoon with Fukudome. Fuld is the first depth option in this combo.

by ClarkFan on Dec 26, 2009 7:45 PM CST up reply actions

the obsession

with fuld and johnson i do not get. yes johnson is a good player, but with all the back issues and constant injuries, no thanks. fuld is not an everyday player in my opinion. the major problem i have with byrd (other than hes a product of one good year, weight issues, and i dont like ranger outfielders anymore) is ive heard about no other teams really interested in the guy. give me ankiel or church, and then find a cheap right handed OF. but let johnson go.

Reed has had no back issues since joining the Cubs...

…and his injured foot was a freak accident.

You mention Reed Johnson's "constant injuries" as a reason not to sign him...

…and then you suggest 2 guys that both have had recent career threatening injuries.

Nady’s coming off his 2nd Tommy John surgery. Success rates for multiple elbow ligament replacement surgeries is much lower.

Baldelli has had hamstring problems for the last 3 seasons and suffers from some mysterious fatigue disease that doesn’t allow him to play back to back games.

Jeesh.

Carl Crawford is a FA after next year...

sign Reed to a one year deal, then go full court press after Crawford. Forget Marlon Byrd.

by kanderber on Dec 26, 2009 10:12 AM CST reply actions

Yabbut...

… Crawford isn’t a CF. He’s played only a handful of games there since 2004.

Hmm...

You’re right. I was thinking he was a CF-er for some reason. Even still, with his speed and athleticism, is there any reason he couldn’t play CF full time?

by kanderber on Dec 26, 2009 11:39 AM CST up reply actions

If he could...

… ask yourself why the (Devil) Rays used people like Gerald Williams, Randy Winn and Damon Hollins as starting CF during Crawford’s younger years.

lets hope

hendry does not have a man crush on byrd the way he did on bradley. i too say get johnson for a year. dont know much about byrd but everyone around here seems to not be too interested.

by NOMAR on Dec 26, 2009 11:20 AM CST reply actions

Losing Johnson would be no big deal

Johnson is a 4th or 5th outfielder type. In 2008 he was good, in 2009 he was not so good. Losing him to another team is not something to lose sleep over.

by BLou on Dec 26, 2009 12:38 PM CST reply actions

he was not

so good in 2009 because they had to to keep running bradley and soriano and fukudome out there due to big salaries. whether they hit or not. agreed it would not be a huge loss but reed is a good player.

by NOMAR on Dec 27, 2009 10:10 AM CST reply actions

If the Yankees want him

they will get him .. and another black hole will appear in the roster abyss.

Course, the Bradley debacle is the mother of all of them so far
