Bay reaches deal with Mets, pending physical
$66 million over four years with a vesting option for a fifth year. Too much if you ask me.

Great news
Now if Holiday signs with Boston, the Cards will have to go with a lesser option at LF.

If they can stay healthy
and get Jose Reyes back at some point, very nice looking top half of the batting order.

Jason Bay is a poor man's Adam Dunn.
He sucks at defense, strikes out at the same clip, has very similar wOBA and BAbip, and has similar WAR. I just like Dunn more because he does all of these things with more lumberjack-skills.
The Mets are going to be disappointed.
Which makes me happy.

Agreed.
Bay is a good player, but not worth that kind of dough, and as noted above, he will have trouble in Citi Field.

Yet aren't you one of those who rationalizes the $136 million invested in Soriano and the insane $48 million doled out to Fukudome?!?!
Yes, Jason Bay’s contract is too rich. But in the context of 2/3rds of the Cubbie outfield he is a relative bargain. Especially for a guy who is a lead pipe cinch to drive in 100 runs and who actually is a Gold Glover compared to Soriano in left.

The Mets
Overall, the team will be better with Bay. He’s overpaid, and he overplayed his hand in Boston, but he should, for a few years, be a solid contributor and form a potent enough middle of the order with Wright/Beltran … if they can stay healthy. That said, the biggest issue that they had to address this offseason, IMO, was that pitching staff, and they still haven’t done that. If I’m a Mets fan, I’d rather see them take gambles on guys like Erik Bedard, Ben Sheets, Chien-Ming Wang than go after someone like Piniero … but it sounds as if that’s the direction that it’s headed.
Santana, Maine and Pelfrey isn't a bad threesome
Santana is a true ace and Maine is quality enough. Pelfrey has the ability to be a legit # 3 starter too. The Mets DO need starting pitching, but I disagree that their starting pitching is necessarily a weak spot. Especially in the context of that lineup card and what still shapes up to be a pretty good bullpen.

The Mets are overpaying a lot of guys
I always wonder at people who call Minaya a great GM. He just has sacks full of cash at his disposal.
And how would this be different then the overpaying done by Genius Jim ?!?!
Dempster, Zambrano, Fukudome, Soriano, Bradley / Silva ?!?! Sorry, but I have a hard time understanding how Cub fans can shit on Omar Minaya for a contract dished out to Jason Bay that, while too much money, would look like a relative bargain if he played for the Cubs.
