SI makes Jeter its 2009 homer pick for Sportsman of the Year
What exactly did Jeter do this year to win this? Play and win on the most expensive team in history?

My reaction (as a longtime SI subscriber) was meh.
It was one of Jeter’s best seasons, but there were still better candidates (Usain Bolt, anyone?)
What I found more interesting was that Jeter was the first Yankee to win the award. I was stunned that Maris, the Mick, or even Reggie never won the award.
SI was much less NY-centric in those days.
Good thing they didn’t choose Tiger Woods.

Good grief
So let me understand…maybe it’s me….maybe I’m a little goofed up in the head…
Derek Jeter, a lifetime .320 hitter, is fresh off a season where he led a Yankee team to its 7th World Series during his tenure at shortstop. On top of becoming the all-time Yankees hit leader (surpassing the likes of Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Berra, Dickey, Mantle, Mattingly), having another 200 hit / 100 run season, stealing 30 bases and garnering another Gold Glove.
Nah, Derek Jeter was a bad pick.
Idiots.
The Blackhawks and the Stanley Cup in 2010.
Usain Bolt became the fastest man in the entire world, ever.
Jeter won because of a lifetime achievement pity vote.
Thanks for the name calling, too, that makes your comment that more mature and reputable.

Hah!
Intangibles are atleast 500 times better than being the fastest man in the history of mankind!
This Chicago Cubs team is currently Aaron free. Keep it that way, please.

Bolt
Most of the US probably doesn’t even remember. Nothing against Bolt but this is also about the whole package.
And most importantly Jeter is smoking hot :).

I don't even know how to respond to this.

And anyone who didn’t realize my hot comment about Jeter was meant as a joke wouldn’t know how to respond.
I was meh about this but all this hate for Jeter has made me glad he won it.

Actually there’s no problem with if 2 people are close considering lifetime achievement as part of the decision.
You’re acting like they chose Aaron Miles!

If you and the other Bolt lovers and Jeter haters had just backed Bolt without the trashing of Jeter you’d have an argument.
If you had acknowledged Jeter’s contributions and then said but I think Bolt deserved it more it would be different.
Fact is ask 100 people who Bolt is and ask who Jeter is and who do you think more would know?

OT: speaking of future HoFers...
I had a breakfast meeting at a dive in Westwood today (near UCLA) and Barry Bonds sat down in the booth next to me. This dive is not near any hotels, so Bonds must be hanging out in LA these days. He looked like a regular at the place.
Man, that guy still has a massive dome!!

Jeter
Jeter had one of his best seasons of his career, is one of the most popular players in the game and is a class act.
Nothing against Mr. Bolt but the vast majority of the US population probably doesn’t remember who he is. If he had done it during the Olympics it might have been different.
This award is more than just their achievements on the field.
I’m more surprised Jeter hasn’t won it before.
I can’t stand the Yankees but Jeter is one of my favorite non Chicago athletes of all time and my 2nd favorite currently and favorite baseball player (Peyton Manning is #1 for me)

Hmmm...
If he had done it during the Olympics it might have been different.
Well, he did, remember?
Actually there’s no problem with if 2 people are close considering lifetime achievement as part of the decision.
I would consider Bolt’s Olympic performance part of his lifetime achievements, no?
The Olympics was 2008 and this was for 2009.
I am not trying to make it sound like Bolt is undeserving. I am reacting to people saying Jeter isn’t like they picked Aaron Miles instead!
Still lifetime achievement over 2 years in a sport usually followed only by americans during the Olympics.

Usian Bolt set WR and OR @ the 2008 Summer Olympics. He then broke his own WR in both the 100m and the 200m in 2009 at the Worlds. He not only beat his on WRs in both, he f-ing shattered, obliterated, destroyed them (9.69—>9.58 & 19.30—>19.19).
Please, stop talking. You’re wrong.

But but but.... Jeter is smoking hot, remember?

That was meant as a joke my comment about Jeter.
What did Jeter ever do to you? This is obviously personal. Anyone who thinks that Jeter winning it is an terrible obviously has a personal grudge. To say that your hero Bolt should have is one thing but to say that Jeter is completely undeserving is absolutely ridiculous.
Again you act like Aaron Miles won it!

I’m not questioning saying Bolt was more deserving. I don’t agree but unlike you and the others I wouldn’t be here bashing Bolt for winning it over Jeter.
Trashing Jeter to make your argument makes you wrong. Using ridiculous claims to back your argument makes you wrong.
What did Jeter ever do to you? This is obviously personal.
Again it’s not Aaron MIles who won the award.
