Jayson Stark On Milton Bradley
Stark seems to think Tampa's going to be his destination, and by the time the Winter Meetings end, too.
Oh, and there's some Mark DeRosa stuff in there, too.

I really, really hope we don't bring back DeRo
I’m sick of hearing about him. He was great while he was here. Let’s just move on.

I'm tellin' ya...
…it really looks like Tampa Bay or bust for Bradley. I just haven’t read anything else that makes any sense. And I mean straight-up. The three-way deal with the Mets that Stark writes about doesn’t really ring true unless the Mets really like Burrell for some reason.

Who knows what might happen with Burrell?
He could be a Daryle Ward type bench player. He could have a great spring training and wind up traded then.
But I agree, it does look like Tampa Bay. Milton should enjoy that. No one pays any attention to baseball there.

You just love to snark, don't you?
In fact, Burrell could be a 1B backup.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
sorry, couldn't help myself there
but sadly, 1B is a better alternative that putting him in the OF (especially if he’s in a platoon with Soriano in the lineup)
Correct.
Really, he’s nothing different than a righthanded Daryle Ward. Burrell had a terrible year last year, but he hit well in 2008, a year where he drew over 100 walks. He could play outfield occasionally, back up 1B, and pinch hit.
I’d prefer to flip him, but he is not totally worthless.

With Miles gone, get rid of Bradley and I can chalk this up to a successful off-season.

And then...
Maybe we can just pawn off Pat Burrell!

I read somewhere that DeRosa is seeking in the area of 9 mil a season!
I’m guessing he ends up more in the range for what Scutaro signed for, but we’ll see I guess.
I agree with you.
I don’t think DeRosa will command $9m a season. I wouldn’t pay him that much.

$9m a season?
That’s about 3.5 million more I would pay him.

Seeking is not equal to receiving
Well, I never heard it before, but it sounds uncommon nonsense.

Latest DeRosa rumor is Braves
With a "hometown " discount. I doubt the 3/27 figure was ever real but agents have to start somewhere so when he signs for 2/10 the team gets to think it saved 17 million.

So maybe that makes sense for both parties.

DeRo returning ...
Only way I see it happening is if the Cubs dump Bradley (to save money), trade Baker, trade or non-tender Fontenot get an everyday centerfielder and stay away from Luis Castillo in the process.
If all that happens, then the Cubs could use DeRosa (in basically the role he filled in 2007 and 2008) if the price is right. But I don’t see ALL of those things happening, unless Baker is the key in getting Granderson — which is highly unlikely.
Crikey
Why o’ why can’t some of you get it into your heads that dumping Milton Bradley means Hendry will also have to eat a lot of salary and / or take on somebody else’s ugly contract.
Losing Bradley will free up very few dollars. Losing Bradley removes a toxin, but doesn’t do a damned thing to bring payroll flexibility to go out and do other things.
It’s not that hard to grasp.
The Blackhawks and the Stanley Cup in 2010.
I get what you're saying
but what about the whole addition by subtraction theory. After the way 2009 ended, and the reaction by some of his teammates…it’ll be pretty hard, but not impossible, to bring him back.

The problem is that the bulk of BCBers are convinced that dumping Bradley frees up Hendry to make wondrous moves
It doesn’t. Not at all. Everybody wants Bradley gone, but once he’s gone we are still in the same dilemma. Hendry spent this team into oblivion and the Cubs are saddled with the ugliest assortment of contracts in baseball. The only thing to do is wait for them to unwind.
Dumping Bradley is great. But adding Pat Burrell???? He’s useless…. An insanely overpaid DH on the Cubs roster?!?! How exactly is THAT going to work for the benefit of improvement in the standings?!?!

Just curious
Do you still count Derrek Lee’s contract as one of the ugliest in baseball?

Why is it
When he is actually right about something, you come back with some snarky comment like you know everything?
I would sleep with Blou if it meant the Cubs would win a WS. by Doggie Stalker on Aug 22, 2009 4:11 PM EDT
I would hope
that Hendry would only do this deal if he had another in place for Pat the Bat. I agree with BLou — Burrell is useless in the NL.
Numbers may not lie, but they don’t tell the whole truth (and nothing but the truth), either. -- Doug Glanville
BLou exaggerates to make his points.
I’ll sit down and reason with him when he wants to – and have enjoyed doing so in the past. You can have a good conversation with BLou.
Right now, however, he’s on a crusade against Hendry and his exaggeration is beyond stomaching. Meanwhile he’s refusing to get specific about what is good on the Cubs and what needs to go.
I wish I could bait him into getting more specific and reasonable, even though I doubt I can. He has bigger fish to fry – namely, Hendry.
Oh, and I reject the idea that sarcasm/snark must be read as being a know-it-all. Indeed, I find it kind of humorless to read sarcasm that way.

If anything, moving Bradley creates another problem for us
Namely, we need another OF who is capable of starting the majority of the games. Preferably a CF, so we can move Dome to right, and preferably one who can hit. Those generally aren’t cheap.
My thought, fwiw -
We know Hendry’s f.o. is quiet when it comes to trade rumors. They’ll talk about free agents they are interested in, but it seems like the rumors for whom the Cubs might trade come from the other clubs most of the time. So, my guess is that the TB f.o. keeps leaking that they aren’t budging and the one or two other teams interested aren’t talking. It makes no sense for them to talk. They don’t want to help Hendry build a market. So long as TB keeps saying they’re not budging on the cash, those other teams should be quiet about their interest and hope to step in just above TB’s offer. The other reason other clubs may not want to talk about this trade is that they may be offering players they may not expect to be able to move apart from a trade like this. It could upset that player if he was connected to a Bradley trade and the trade fell apart. Say, for example, the Rangers were talking to the Cubs about a Michael Young for Bradley trade. There’s no way they’d want to telegraph this until they were sure it could happen.

for what its worth, muskat says 3 teams are interested in bradley
http://muskat.mlblogs.com/archives/2009/12/124_looking_ahead_to_indy.html
This Chicago Cubs team is currently Aaron free. Keep it that way, please.
it's not worth much
It appears as many as three teams are interested in Milton Bradley, and GM Jim Hendry will spend next week at the Winter Meetings in Indianapolis trying to find the right match.
and then she doesn’t mention any of the teams. Honestly, where did this person learn to write – the Scott Boras School of Journalism???

True, but...
… we know that two of them are the Rangers and Rays, from other published reports. I wonder who the other one is?

Yeah, Toronto would make sense, but...
… only if the Cubs took Vernon Wells back, and I doubt they want to do that.

Toronto is moving Lind to 1B, I think
so they have room. I still believe Bradley is a buy low in 2010 sell high in 2011 candidate – he just needs to be out of the way and Toronto is as out of the way as it gets.
Is he traded yet?
Room in the lineup, sure...
… but who would the Cubs have to take back in return?
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
It doesn't have to be a trade for a bad contract
The Cubs could give up a useable player and cash as they did in the Miles-Fox trade. I think they want to get rid of Overbay’s salary, so he could go in a three-way trade or – how about this – Bradley, Barney, and cash for Brian Dopirak!

I think I'd rather have Burrell than Overbay.

is it
worth 6 mill to dump bradley??? burrell and bradley make the same next year and then you split the difference in2011. still cant figure out why the rays want him though. they seem to have a good clubhouse over there. at least he wont have to worry about40 thousand fans giving him a hard time every day. more like 8 thousand.
