Chicago media stuff - Morrissey switches sides

http://www.suntimes.com/sports/1921828,chicago-sun-times-rick-morrissey-120409.article

I don't know if this amounts to much. Morrissey is a homeless man's Rick Reilly, who is basically just a shell of himself now. I think the paper had a chance to go for a young, hungry blogger type and didn't.

BUT... Morrissey is the Tribune's top hitter, so it is a blow, I guess.

To the polls!

Interesting.
’’I’m excited to be a part of this,‘’ Morrissey said Friday night. ’’I see nothing but good things ahead for the Sun-Times. It’s an exciting time to be a part of the paper.’’

This reminds me of someone else, who once said something very similar:

“I’m excited to be a part of this,” Captain Edward John Smith said Friday night. “I see nothing but good things ahead for the Titanic. It’s an exciting time to be a part of the White Star Line.”

LOL.....

….Morrissey switching to the Sun Times is the equivalent of shuffling the deck chairs on that very ocean liner….

Newspaper Columnists are a dying breed

And it’s because of people like Rick Morrissey who work on writing bad puns instead of doing research. I think David Haugh does a nice job though.

Haugh's Bears coverage is good...

It’s when he starts talking Cubs and Bulls that he gets annoying and at times ridiculous.

Someday we'll go all the way...

Question for DeLuca

How exactly does adding a columnist who is wrong 98.7% of the time help your sports section? As Shoemile noted, RM’s articles are poorly researched and I will more directly add ill-informed.

I don’t read any of the columnists because their function has changed. It used to be that the columnist was the voice of the slightly more analytical “every fan”.

Now the job of a columnist is solely to create debatable topics (buzz) so people will visit the website and comment on the article.

Don't think his departure is going to hurt the Tribune...

not sure why he want to go to the Sun-Times, though. IIRC, the Sun Times company is still less stable financially in spite of the change in ownership than the Tribune Co.

It's a fair point.. S-T has about 60% the circulation of the Trib?

The question is which will have to fold the tent first, and the other question is will the survivor be mortally wounded before the other gives up the ghost?

No great loss

The Trib should alternate KC Johnson and Chris Kuc as columnists since they don’t cover NHL and NBA nationally…Greenstein might make a good columnist also. I think they’ll just replace from within. Agree on Haugh, he’s very thoughtful.

Morrissey was a decent writer, not a pot-shot taker like Bernie and Jay M., but didn’t provide any great insight or real wit…I think he was way overrated, and not that well plugged into Chicago sports.
